RE: How can we save this mod? - Jack_Henderson - 05-03-2014 Lyth, players will always hate what devs do. Players are too different. Quote:A Dev, yesterday: "no matter what you do, there are always two groups of people - those who approve of it and those who dont. the latter happen to be usually way louder than the former, which is what has discouraged a couple of active devs in the past" Quote:A Player's statement, posted into the Dev channel seconds after above statament was made: "The thing is, disco could still be saved. Quite easily actually. But the Dev team are less competent than a group of monkeys with autism" Why would anybody even care to invest, if this is the treatment you get? RE: How can we save this mod? - Zayne Carrick - 05-03-2014 Adjusting number of systems can make mod more playable... But it should come with major trade system balancing, which's not possible, I fear. RE: How can we save this mod? - Acolyte - 05-03-2014 The reason I left in 2009 or 2010 is because of the negative atmosphere. It was a time of huge turmoil. Groups were getting flamed with a new thread every day, vets were making groups of ridiculous characters simply for PvP (i.e. the 'Al Qaeda' [hello, NSA] faction), and most of the aforementioned vets were trolls to boot. They got away with +1'ing in threads with serious discussion potential by posting inflammatory things. If you called them out on it, you derailed the thread. If you didn't they got away with being a jerk. To some extent, I see that negative atmosphere still. People are too quick to judge one another. The problem with a roleplay server is that everyone wants to be the best storyteller, and with that comes ego, and with that comes the notion that people can get away with being a jerk. We forget that there are other human beings on the other side of the screen, and our pride is quick to say, "What an idiot you are for this suggestion!" We need to remember that we're all human, we're all trying our best. If you disagree with something, say it in a rational manner. -Edit- Also, for me, once the move toward forming 'generic' factions was made, a lot of RP potential was lost. The Southern Alliance became the Liberty Navy. The Black Squadron became the Order. Queen Carina's Own became the BAF. I understand the importance of sticking to vanilla lore, but when you eliminate special groups like that in favor of generic roles, you eliminate roleplay flexibility. Special groups can have special goals. Generic factions can only hope to shoot the enemies listed in their info card. In many ways, we did to factions what we should have done with systems. Simplification. RE: How can we save this mod? - Benz - 05-03-2014 I'm just back for a few weeks now and I played 4.84 and 4.85 for a while. So for me it was quite a fresh start. Keeping that in mind -here is my List: Within the mod: - Put the story 80 years in the Future. - Remove Gallic space (the map is way too big for 50-100 people). - Unite the Hispanic faction to start some really new events. - Push the History of the Colonial Republic to a point when the regain strength and become a "global player". - Remove the war between Liberty and Rheinland. Let them stay united against Hispanic/Colonials. => The map would be smaller, therefor more player-player interaction. Outside the game: 1. Installing: - I'm really sorry but the affords made to explain how to proper install the game itself and the software needed for play it properly is poor as best. - I had to read and search a lot. And I had to find the geek in me to understand what was optional and what was necessary. You can't catch new players with such a struggle. Not everyone wants to spend that much time just to understand how things work and what software you need in order to succeed in the game. In my case that was Launchpad, Swag-Pack, FL-Companion and most AMD-users might need some FPS-stabilizer as well. - I would gladly help to create a post where everything is explained step by step with it's pros and cons. Maybe there should be a "Pack" one can download which contains all the good things the community created?! 2. Creation/development of the game: - Create polls for some small and the big steps (not for every step) to give the community a direct connection into the game. - There should be a small group of people who try to advertise the game and create attention. But AFTER the changes were made and 5.0 is out Message: Disoc is back! We kept the good stuff and pushed beyond!" Benz RE: How can we save this mod? - Acolyte - 05-03-2014 Oh! Right. Constructive suggestions besides peace and love... Um. Yes! 1. Remove buffer systems, they totally killed activity in the Omicrons, even if the intent was to add a 'battlefield' sort of middle ground. 2. Remove Gallia... Sorry, it was a really cool idea, but the fact that all the systems are practically the size of Newcastle was really daunting. They were so big that, even when the systems were flooded (in the early days) it was easy to sneak right by and not see a soul. 3. BUT! Maybe keep Gallic commodities on black market bases across the Sector. Bump up their value. Kind of little momentos from the 'Lost Kingdom', if you will. 4. Give Bretonia some hope. Leeds used to have at least three or four people in it at all times; now it's a derelict system because Gallia hates practically everyone and nobody wants to enter a system swimming with enemies. 5. I agree with transparency of development. I also agree that people need to be nicer to the devs; we kind of like to bite the hand that feeds us, petulant children that we are. I am thrice in agreement with the idea of development polls, however I think that developments majorly impacting a certain faction should be consulted only with members of that faction. I don't think the leap to the future is necessary. I think it would be neat, but I don't really think that's the best option. Then again, I don't know what would be a suitable alternative, so I guess it's the only one we've offered up so far. I love Gallia. like it or not, due to Gauls , BAF has more activity than LN RE: How can we save this mod? - Ayatolah - 05-03-2014 Gallia was a good idea, but as previously stated by almost everyone is excessive large. Could be Nomad-nuked and keep a pair of surviving sistems. The lack of help to newcomers are also an issue... Worth to ment that long established factions exercices a clear dictatorship in terms of rp.... what' the fun if someone who argues he/she's right because is official not letting you develop as you want? Newcomers in such situation tends t gre tired an go away.... some argue here about IDs, personally i think its a necesary an passive method of control, true that can force to do certain things but also allows many more, certain limits are necessary. I remember here was the rule about only one official faction per ID, i think that rule messed a bit, as some unofficial factions where doing better than "official"ones.... (curiously, those officials were usually the ones who was castin ironfist above non official ones)... there' more issues of course...
