The need for bounties?

That depends...from an OOC perspective no, players hunting bounties aren't doing anything except getting blue messages for cash, and that doesn't really add (or detract) from the game, not really.

From a Roleplayer's perspective though, Bounties, Bounty Hunting, and Bounty Hunters, are fairly common in Sci-fi settings and they do add opportunities for character development or interactions here on Disco, both for the Hunter and the 'Huntee'. Additionally, it does make sense that governments or corporations would issue bounties for specific threats, threats that they may not always be able to handle how they'd like, and that's where Bounty Hunters come in. Again, it adds a depth to the game that isn't there.

But while we're on the topic, why is the Bounty Hunter ID so cut and dry lawful? Why isn't it more Quasi-lawful as the lore suggests it would be? Why is it all so black and white?

But anyway, of course, if players with Bounty Hunter IDs, or players registered on Bounty Boards, are just using that as an excuse to go out and kill with crappy RP, no yeah, it's hard to see that it is actually a thing that adds to the inRP atmosphere of the game, BUT IT DOES, ultimately.

TL;DR: The 'Need' for Bounty Hunting/Bounty Hunters is the same as the 'Need' for any other character or organizational archetype on this server and in this community: Roleplaying Opportunities.

And from a purely OOC perspective; it's a quick way to make cash, and if that's your main goal on Disco, to amass all the fake space money...why not?

Personally, I loved being hunted. It made me feel... proud.

Let me clarify my statement.

There's a fine line between small bounties for activity (2-4 mil "ish") and blatant bounties made to drive people away from the server or make them miserable while they're here (Sirius Wide, 10 mil. DSE had 40 million credit bounties on [ALG] transports, etc).

I would rather have a 500M Bounty on me than a 2M.

Looks like I have a 20m Bounty on me CURRENTLY. Sirius wide.

Haven't had any issues with it at all.

I really don't know why would someone who's bountied for 3257432905 billion credits leave the server. It is like heaven -- everybody will pew you! Pew is the point of this space shooter. We just add it some spice with RP.
The only one who will leave, from my perspective, is the one who's paying. They will ultimately go bankrupt.

Honestly all the fuzz about it is null. You could also complain about every ID, who has a possibilty to engage their enemies to begin with, because those are the IDs (except the Freelancer ID), who claim bounties for their "natural" enemies anyways (because you have to be hostile to them). The only difference is that they get paid for it and those payments usually evolve around what you'd get for a helium run from Penny to Kusari with a medium-sized transport.
I doubt if there weren't any bounties that suddenly everyone would stop attacking each other with void rp insta engage messages. People, who do that now, will do that without bounties as well and people, who didn't won't do that either.

Bounty hunting is there for being a "bounty hunter" and to add some more value to the kills you would make anyways.

I wondered that as well, I assume there has to be a reason, which was rp'd out at some point or some concerns rule-wise.

RE: Bounty hunting - why? - Haste - 01-23-2015

I like character-specific bounties, especially ones that are really worth hunting, the most.

Blanket bounties end up making players behave more like terrorists than actual bounty hunters. "Hey navy u got a bounty on ur head die now!!". Bland and boring. Hunting a high-value target is a whole different ballgame (:

The only way I see a high bounty driving someone off the server is if it's against a trade ship or something. If you're flying a combat ship, how can getting all-the-combat-you-can-have be a bad thing?

And yes, let's be real here, being (highly) bountied is somewhat ego-stroking as well.

^What he said.

ć@Thunderer It aint fun when you're in miner mining ore. =/

RE: Bounty hunting - why? - Lythrilux - 01-23-2015

Bounties against transports only work if a Pirate faction takes them up. It's not as good when an FL or something comes over and just gets to outright blast the ship.

Just change your name and you can can be happy with your bountying friend not having to spend money.
