Don't be predictable. Smuggler's biggest enemy is routine.

If you're going to do "espionage," at least make it an interaction for both sides.

Example 1: Follow the smuggler in an ship (cloaked if you like) at a range far enough away not to be scanned/detected while cloaked. When you actually go in for the scan, then uncloak and give a chance for some interaction.

Example 2: RP as an undercover agent with the lawful agency you want to "work for," but use an ID that lets you blend in with other smugglers. Get yourself into a group with the other player posing as another smuggler. Do part of the trip with them (ie: enough to get the evidence you need) then call in the cavalry/peace out and report them in a communication thread. Very spy, much espionage, such interaction

RE: Espionage - Binski - 02-13-2015

It should be as simple as 'you can get spied on in this game'. Everyone acting like they don't use the chat list anyways is laughable. I know this because I can tell how avoided I am when I hit a certain area, its not hard to tell. But to me, its still a level playing field and there are ways to counter everything. What else is there? Forcing a cloaked ship to reveal themselves to make the other party feel better is ridiculous. As others have stated, this is just becoming in issue now? Espionage happens, if you're in the live environment, you may be seen, by either cloaked or uncloaked vessels. Everything you do is on record and your actions are public here. There's always a chance of being seen when you don't realize it, act carefully as everything you do can be taken inrp, like shooting npcs.

The problem really lies with people claiming they want to 'smuggle' which is by nature a secretive activity, yet they want it to be a p2p experience that involves multiple parties. Its conflicting by nature. Smugglers try to beat normal trade methods, cloaks can beat normal smuggling methods. There's still a requirement to do the work and get out there and do the flying, be the spy. Its not about avoiding interaction, its about epic execution. Besides, if spying is all these people are doing to traders/smugglers, you're lucky. In most cases I certainly will drop my cloak, but you might not be so happy to see me, since it seems like these complaintants would rather be attacked or pirated than simply talked about inrp.

RE: Espionage - Blodwyn O'Driscoll - 02-13-2015

Is there not a sound displayed when a cloaked ship is around ?

Then, just don't dock on your secret ally base, or drop and destroy the contraband before the cloaked ship could get a scan on you.

Also more rule are absolutely not necessary but also detrimental to the whole game especially the Roleplaying part.

Maybe you shouldn't meet in non-guard systems, have your chat in local public comms, or meet up in easy to find locations.

Even though i don't neccessarily agree with the methods, this is basically how it is. I know what this guy is saying is true because I am one of those people not wanted to be SS with certain ships in certain areas. It makes people police themselves knowing that getting snapped in a bad shot can happen. Will I use my OORP system scanner to avoid such encounters if I feel lurked? Absolutely. I say this because I have no doubt this is how I myself am being tracked. Even if I have turned my arriving/departing player thing off, I know other players haven't and also use this method to keep tabs on those they are chasing.

An idea would be to rename the players online column to some thing like "Long range scanner" or Early warning system" as that list, while an OORP function, dictates the terms of many encounters on the server. This would turn it into more of an intellegence/counterintellegence thing rather than serving a purely OORP function.

I would like to add however there is a difference between inRP espionage, and using cloaks to maliciously destroy another players RP. That is a line that hasn't been drawn yet and IMHO is a matter of perspective and would be hard to regulate.

So, effectively how actual criminals act? I mean if you want to get some good immersion while smuggling, than having the constant feeling of being watched and potentially caught is definitely a good way to do it.

RE: Espionage - Tutashkhia - 02-13-2015

This was something new and interesting. And I see nothing bad in it, just... if it's done by an official faction then make the ship which records carry the tag, would be better.

It was much worse when cloaks didn't have sound and lawfuls in New York chased after you to take screens of you docking on the Rochester base. This time as the cloaks have sound, nothing is bad in espionage.

RE: Espionage - Sonoshee - 02-13-2015

Well, you was told that cloaks would, obviously, make a lot more problems then fun - deal with it. There is no way except going through a lot of santions or paperwork. The paperwork is either to lye down on player's or admin's neck - it's just a matter of choise for what way to go. The easiest solution is to leave things as they are.
