There's absolutely nothing we can do now to prevent something mentioned above happening and the fights will never be "balanced". Not only as a moneysink, but also for the sake of what you have described before. Make the Mk II snubs open to anyone, make the Mk II caps SRP. However, @Mímir had the idea that actually might work, however, there is the question of bombers, which then would make caps sitting ducks, since their guns wouldn't be able to hit bombers... which would cause moar QQ when a single bomber nukes a CAU8 BS ... Result would be that cap-cap fight won´t be changed but it would take ages for bombers to take down any cap, turning them into annoyance but not big danger. This will preserve bombers as threat for gunboats (which are meant to be mainly anti-snub class, so it´s balanced that both sides are dangerous to each other). Only change would be that gunboats would be no longer threat to bigger caps (so no more cruisers kited to death by solo gunboat). While yes hindsight is 20/20 and this would have been great(and alot of other tech as well cloaks etc etc...)don't do this, I was around on DUSA *shudders* server when they introduced Capital ship registrations. This made all capital vessels require to post a biography, and anyone could look up OORP information all they liked. The intention was to curb the presence of lulzy caps and limit the tech usage to those that the team there saw fit.. I'm not saying the community here would be doing this, I am saying that attempts to "grandfather in" a big change like this or anything similar to control tech usage are far too late already, and while it may look like the magic bullet, it really isn't. That move really was the beginning of the end for that team. Please let the people here learn from that terrible mistake. There are still a few DUSA survivors who made the move here though, currently playing. I'm sure they can attest to what I am saying here. Don't touch the hulls or armor upgrades, just add a shield stronger than Armor, gg. Well in other Sci-fi games and movies it's the same isn't it, Shield is huge and resistant while once shield is breached, hull is very easy dmgable. Just make the Caps shields the type that fighter weapons are the less effective, and vice versa. Edit: But then again, if such "simple and obvious solutions" have been pondered time and time again, but never implemented, it must be because of balancing factors that I could not even begin to fathom. Balance Devs do something. (Also, when did a BS shields succumbed to a fighter group? Is it possible if the BS is not static and taking all the damage?) Those who complain about cap vs snub balance because their snub brawl has been ruined by some lolwut caps, or those who do not complain at all because they are driving those caps and have no problem with ruining others' fun?
