RE: The Dark Cycle - Char Aznable - 01-23-2016

Knowing that the light would eventually show her face inevitably, she pulled down the scarf. Would have been too warm anyway. She mustered the apartment, along with her captive. Small, spartanic inventory. Maybe his story was in fact true and he had been transferred here shortly beforehand. That, however, brought up the question why that happened. She didn't even make a move, positioned clearly between him and his only escape path that didn't lead thousands of meters down. The sleek gun that pointed at him was almost fully loaded - one bar at its side was suspiciously absent. A previously fired shot. Other than that, nothing on her made an identification possible. The green eyes focused him, a glare that she usually used to scare students when they didn't do their homework. Interestingly enough, it worked well with prisoners as well - especially if you combined it with a gun.

"Well, a few things. Let's start with who you work for and what you have to do with the death of Cristofer Breisacher. You're no ordinary policeman, that much I can tell."

I only got a good look at her when she lowered her scarf. She stared at me, with shadowy eyes that shot past my facade. Behind her cloak she hid strands of dark hair. Green perhaps? Her skin was paler than normal, and gently dusted with snow. She held a gun and my life in one hand, and my escape in the other. She placed herself between me and the door, to stop me from running. It's not as if I would run, I thought.

She asked about him, Cristofer. His limp body falling to the floor flashed before me.

"Cristofer? I was a friend. Found about his recent death and decided to take up the case myself." I took a deep breath. You can't stop now. "And you're right, I'm no ordinary policeman. I've been trying to wedge myself off of government work recently, but his death just threw me back into it. Gave a sudden spur of initiative, I suppose."

Nika thought a moment. Even if he had been telling the truth - how could she be sure? And, more importantly, a friend of Cristofers would very likely not have gotten access to the files of his assassination, at least not that fast - and therefore it threw up the question where that... Individual... knew of Jane. Either way, just going with it was out of the question entirely.

"You're taking a pretty big risk telling me this, Herr Brandt. What if I am with the MND, to evaluate your integrity?"

A test. Nika eyes his forehead closely, watching for the treacherous pearls of sweat to appear. If he was truly hiding something from the Government, it would show there. And that would be a great opportunity to make him spill the beans on how close the Police was to catching her.

RE: The Dark Cycle - Euca - 01-24-2016

What a dumb question, I thought. We were both playing dumb. The MND were scarcely involved with the affairs of the CTI, and would not have known a lowly detective such as myself. There was a risk telling her that, I realize now, as either she would shoot me, or the police for abandoning my post. Perhaps what intriguied me the most was that she believed that the MND were bold enough to interrogate citizens such as myself on a whim. She thinks were under a police state, I thought, then let it wither.

"The MND have other things to worry about than what a lonely detective does with his work." I squinted slightly, to look skeptical. "Regardless, they're not involved with this case. They wouldn't care about the death of a middle aged man, or the cheap investigator that put his hand up out of compassion. I remembered the scathing way the intelligence officer spoke at the CTI Headquarters. Amateur work, I recalled, and now it was beginning to show through.

Nika was not even remotely surprised that he went on the defensive. She couldn't be sure that this person was what he claimed he was, but without a lengthy interrogation it was impossible to find out the truth. Therefore, it really didn't matter what he said. The problem with killing him was that it would draw attention. Sure, a dead nurse happened, but a dead investigator would provoke grave consequences. Unless she found a way to shift the blame away from her, of course.

She decided to lengthen the discussion a bit, give her time on deciding if killing him would be a good Idea. She also couldn't help but notice the slightly amused expression in his eyes - he looked down on her. There was definetely more to him than he claimed.

"Look, we can do this one of two ways. Either, you meet the same fate as Miss Frankenhof, or you spill the beans and I might give you a chance. The choice is yours, and I'd like you to decide quickly. I haven't got all day."

Admitting that she had killed the nurse was another little sting in his direction. She aimed towards two outcomes with it. Either, he would be viewing her in a darker, more threatening light - which would be useful - or he would feel guilty for drawing the innocent woman into this game of life and death. Whichever way it went, it would be beneficial. At least that was what she hoped.

Perhaps, for a heartbeat, I nearly forgot that she was aligned with the Bundschuh. When she admitted her crime, I felt I had failed my job. Another one bites the dust, I thought. For a brief moment, I felt a twang of guilt. Then after, I was freed from that emotion. Who was this nurse to me? No one.

"You killed Frankenhof?" I opened my mouth slightly, and began to breathe heavily. The welling of tears in my eyes was a nice touch.

"I don't know what you want! Deep down, we both know that this isn't how your kind works." I stared, my eyes were open, full of guilt. "The Bundschuh, they're peaceful folk. If you have killed Ms Frankenhof, I cannot judge. But for a moment, consider what shooting me would do. Already your group is facing ridicule from Rheinland, if a dead investigator shows up who was looking into the death of a man who was assumed to be killed by Bundschuh terrorists, then what do you think will happen?" I glanced away, out the window again. Something struck me with that, maybe I wanted someone to dismiss my own killing of cold blood. I wasn't sure at the time, I just felt something then and there when I spoke. Empathy? Emotion?

"This... this can't be what's left of the world. It can't be. Everyone's caught in their own damn dark cycle. Please," I pleaded "don't fall into that cycle. Please, be different." Looking back on it, in that moment, I was being truthful. It seemed like everyone was caught up in a dark cycle of their own. Maybe I was hoping that this populist group wouldn't be too deep. Still redeemable. Can still seek redemption.

Nika hesitated. These words had struck her deeper than she thought they would, and, maybe without knowing, the person before her had shattered her determination completely. Right now, her facade stayed in place - but to hold it up for long was now impossible. She would have to solve this. Quickly.

"What do you propose?"

Her voice wasn't loud, the threatening tone still present. So far, she was able to hide her inner conflict. But if it hadn't been for the dim light and her training, he probably could have noticed her facial colour, that right now had more in common with a pack of chalk rather than a face. Never show weakness. Never let them see your feelings.

RE: The Dark Cycle - Euca - 02-01-2016

She spoke, her aggresive tone had lowered significantly. Was this the calm before the storm, or the end all together? I wasn't sure. I read her face. Maybe the colour changed? Or was it just the light? There was simple shades of grey all around me, but I had to see past that.

"Let me go." I pleaded once more, desperateness dripping with each word. "I'll leave Cristofer behind. Leave Rheinland, if that's what you want. Just please, let me go."

My stomach churned. Truth was a strange concept, especially since it was starting to poke through now, as I had spun my web. The truth was a torch, slowing burning away at myself, itching to be free, to be singing what weighed my heart.

Nika hesitated. The gun in her hand moved down a bit, not far, but her determination flickered. The last days finally began to take their toll, and it would most likely be the end of her if she didn't decide quickly. He didn't tell her everything, of that she was certain. Whatever he hid from her would not be exposed in the short window that was left to her, especially since she needed to return to the Nurses' home soon. She came to a conclusion. Whoever he was, he could still be useful. And killing him... She couldn't make herself do that anymore. Not after this day.

"Take the coat from the floor. There's garage on the other side of this door, I assume?"

His slight nod was enough. Reaching into her pocket with the left hand, she threw him a pair of cable binders.

"Restrain yourself with those. To the garage. And make it quick."

While he was moving through the room, she scanned the walls with her gaze, finding what she searched for - the fuse box. Turning off the garage's power would keep him from contacting anyone, and she'd be back in a few hours to take him to a more appropriate prison.

With a not-so-gentle poke of her gun, she forced her prisoner into the fond of his own hovercraft. The last thing he would see would be her silhouette vanishing into the light of his apartment - and then she closed the door. She'd have a call to make and a crime scene to manipulate.
