RE: MENSA riddles - Corile - 07-10-2017
Since I've already received correct solutions to all riddles, here are the solutions for everyone to see.
Quote:A man lives on the top floor of a very tall building. Every day he takes the lift down to the ground floor to go to work. However, when he comes back from work, he only takes the lift to about half the height of the building and then takes the stairs to his flat. Unless it's raining - then he takes the lift all the way to the top floor where he lives. Why?
The man is not very tall and he can't reach the top button in the lift. However, when it rains, he carries and umbrella with him so he can press the button with the help of the umbrella.
Quote:A woman is a known serial killer. She kills her victims by serving them half of an apple. However, on the eyes of her victims, she eats the other half of the same apple. How is it that she survives each time and her victims die?
She coats one side of a knife's blade with poison, then she uses this knife to cut the apple.
Quote:Caesar and Cleopatra were found dead. Their bodies were lying in a pool of water and shattered glass. Their bodies were found by an open window. There are no bruises or wounds on their bodies and they weren't poisoned. How did they die?
Caesar and Cleopatra are the names of two goldfish. The shattered glass is from a fishbowl which was knocked down by the draught coming from the window.
Quote:A dead man is found in his closed office. All the windows are closed as well. On his desk lays a pen, a few blank pieces of paper and a ready to send letter. The police ruled it as a murder. How did he die?
To put on a postage stamp you usually lick it. There was poison in the glue on the stamp.
Quote:A man woke up one morning, looked out of the window and was frightened to realise that during the night he killed thousands of people, none of whom he knew. How could this happen?
He worked at a lighthouse and one evening he forgot to turn the light on, leading to a large passenger liner crashing and killing everyone on board.
Quote:Fiat driver has a brother, but the brother of the Fiat driver hasn't got a brother. How is it possible?
The fiat driver is a woman.
Quote:A man came to a party, drank a bit of fruit punch and immediately left. All other guests died of poisoning. The police, who arrived at the scene shortly after, ruled that the poison was in the punch and it was there before the man arrived to the party. How is it possible that the man didn't get poisoned?
There were poisoned ice cubes in the punch. Since he drank a bit of it and left quickly, the ice didn't dissolve yet.
Quote:A man couldn't sleep in the middle of the night. He took a phone and called someone, however before they even picked up, he put down the phone and immedaitely fell asleep. Who did he call?
He called his snoring neighbour to wake him up.
Quote:A man is dressed fully in black. He has black boots, socks, trousers, sweater, gloves, mask and hat. He is walking on freshly laid, black asphalt on a street without any lights. The moon cannot be seen either - the sky is very cloudy. In front of him, a black car is driving with its lights turned off. However somehow, the driver noticed the man and he stopped. How is it possible?
It was the middle of the day.
Quote:A merchant became severely in debt. One day he sat in his garden with his daughter when he was visited by one of his creditors. The creditor looked at the girl and noticed she was beautiful and he heard she was quite smart. So suggested an odd transaction. "I'll put two pebbles from the walkway into a bag - black and white. If you take the white one, I'll forgive your father's debts and you are free. However, if you take the black one, I'll forgive your father's debts but you will have to marry me."
Knowing her father's situation and the creditor's impertinence, she agreed. However, she noticed the creditor secretly put in to the bag two black pebbles. How can she get out of this situation without exposing the creditor's fraud?
She takes one pebble from the bag and immediately drops it on the walkway, then says she didn't remember what she took out. But there is another pebble in the bag, so they can just note its colour. Since it's black, we can determine that the dropped pebble was either white or the creditor was cheating.
