Yea i agree, was mainly suggested due to all the complaints i have seen recently of "avoiding interactions" using the player list.

This would be a good idea after we:
increase the playerbase
cut the plain of systems down
have less systems.

Having it show up a Liberty, Taus etc would be a really neat idea but making this change now would just slaughter the encounter rate

Yea the population is the downfall, but i don't think cutting more systems and shrinking systems will help do anything other than kill off the population even more. One thing that attracts vanilla freelancer players to this mod is the added extra systems. And so many games i have seen killed off from removal of things. Most gamers want more and new content, not less. Basically look at newer games like Elite Dangerous, it makes Disco look puny compared to the amount of gameworld it has. Star Citizen (yes i know is not complete) is supposed to have an endless universe someday if they ever finish it. Not all players play the same, or feel the same about how a game should be. Reducing the systems too much we might as well just be playing Vanilla Freelancer with extra ships.

But many complaints are of people using the player list to avoid/hinder interaction, which this would put a stop to. It is just an idea, not saying it should be for sure, just wanted to see how people felt.

Just because those shout the loudest, doesn't mean the problem is the biggest.

This would not really force anyone to interact, but would stop them from avoiding it and have to take chances not seeing exactly what systems people are in.

But that's the point, they want to avoid it. If they can't avoid it they'll just do as minimal rp as they can. Powertrading is already a thing.

Has been for years, yea this change would have been better years ago i agree.

I feel that having some powertraders use it is fine if it gets those players back to their RP willing chars faster.

As for using it to avoid other players, I'll admit I've used it to not step on anyone's toes when re-familiarizing myself with some of the systems surrounding a char's ZOI while they were empty. But it's also used for exactly the opposite: To FIND players to interact with when the population is low.

RE: Suggestion about the player list... - Binski - 04-23-2018

Everyone uses the list to both seek and avoid interactions. It's instinct really. Personally, I wouldn't be opposed to this. In theory if you launch to do what you were going to do anyways, it could work out better. If a trader doesn't know for sure the path is clear, and can't, you pretty much have to go when you sit down to play. Cons: Could take longer from the pirate/hunter side actually since your most logical way to hunt would be to choose a route and block it, and wait for someone to come to you. We all do this anyways but the list lets us know when its really worth it or not. Ironically, if you do that now, and people see you on the list as a likely pirate blocking a system (lingering there a long time), they won't try to pass. So being there when no one is around continues to scare away the opportunities. That makes it more worth it to log when someone is close to where you are, and hope they don't notice you appear until they're already in the target system! That's why as long as the list can be used to avoid people, its just as fair to use it to find them.

Instead, I have been thinking for a long time, that the system you are in could finally be masked (showing ??????) under the following circumstances:

Flying Intelligence ID's
Pirate ID's
Spec Op ID's
Unlawful ID's within their ZOI's (especially wilde/nomads)

All ships of any ID while cloaked. <-- This at the very least! I have been on the fence about RPing around using the list. Its happening all the time now. Perhaps if such a change were made, it would make RP around using the list a bit more fair. Masking your system while cloaked would at least let you throw someone off for a short time.

RE: Suggestion about the player list... - Enkidu - 04-23-2018

Cutting systems is an awful idea that doesn't increase playercount.

At the end of the day, nobody is going to say: "Gee, I wish this game I'm playing had less features!"

Nor will an old, returning player be overjoyed when they discover: "Hey,this game is about 50% less interesting than when I left; they've gutted everything back to Vanilla and 2003! Yay!"

Nor will anybody whose RP just got cut out of the server. Slice - done.

Equally, you're always going to annoy somebody who really liked one specific system or another. Optimising jump hole and jump gate routes is a better strategy. If you cut systems very few people go to anyway, you're not centralising activity, you're taking the 'Discovery' out of Discovery. It's like when people say 'remove Gallia', when Gallia was one of Discovery's unique points over other servers.

This is literally the only videogaming community where people slam their fist on the table and demand content is cut.
