The Scanning Process

Better design in one part

Working together, our dearest Barba Negra along with Dr. Jack Frakes, from the Secret Valey Workshop, optimized the ship hull base design so it could be printed as a single part that requires minimal secondary finishing operations. Manufacturing can be completed in weeks instead of months, enabling the Shipyard to test designs much earlier and more often during the research program.

The one-part design also helps ensure greater reliability.

“With conventional manufacturing technologies, assembly by brazing extremely thin tubes to a manifold is a painstaking operation with very low reliability under high-pressure conditions,”

says Professor Barba Negra.

“With DMP technology, no assembly is required since the part is produced in one continuous operation, no matter how complex the parts or how delicate the features.”

Besides the ability to handle very complex parts at no extra cost, this new technology offers other advantages that fit into BMF's lean and new scenario.

Preset build parameters, developed by BMF based on the outcome of nearly half-a-million builds, provide predictable and repeatable print quality for almost any project.

A totally new architecture simplifies set-up and delivers the versatility to produce all types of parts in titanium, super alloy or basic alloy.
Titanium was chosen for the test model project, based on its lack of porosity and the ability to provide extremely rich, but very strong, walls.

Exchangeable manufacturing modules for the DMP system reduce downtime when moving among different parts and materials, and a outer space vacuum build chamber ensures that every part is printed with proven material properties, density and chemical purity. The small portion of non-printed material can be completely recycled, saving Sirius Credits while providing environmental benefits.

BMF performed extensive testing on the new Direct Metal Printer Head design, using infra blue cameras to verify that heat was dispersed uniformly over the test vessel.

The Project Completion

Chief Operations Manager, Cpt. Dylan Hunt, laid the foundation stone for the conversion of BMF HQ, Isle of Skye, our main production facility,
into Isle of Skye Shipyard on January 826 AS, after the final tests we are ready to begin ship production.
Now under the laws of The Crown of Bretonia, and owned by the State, Bretonia Mining and Fabrication has developed and put into operation the most modern shipbuilding and ship-repair facility in Sirius.
Main activity of the Isle of Skye Shipyard consists of the scanning and preform 3D printing-construction projects that will later be omplemented for mass production in Lord MacRae Shipyard our larger infrastructure still under construction over at Cambridge.
This Shipyard is capable of scanning any given variety of vessels, ranging from the smaller fighters to the largest Dreadnoughts, specialized vessels, passengers vessels and tankers alike, thus answering all the current needs for the initial construction of our very own Batlegroups as well as suporting the BAF, SIS and BPA most urgent needs of a repair location.
The yard also undertakes ship repair, conversion and retrofitting of combat vessels.

The developed infrastructure has the following facilities:

Floating Dry dock 1680m x 500m
300m x 30m Finger Pier
450 m of Quay berthing space with 25 printing arm cranes
275m x 80m of new building berth
323m x 136m transfer slab for repair

Steel Fabrication, Pipe Fabrication, Mechanical and Electrical Workshop housing the most modern steel fabrication panel line, printing machines, Shot blasting and priming machine, Frame printing machine, Pipe bending machines, lathe machine, Milling machine, Beveling machine, Profile cutting machine.
Blasting and Painting Hall equipped with full abrasive recovery system, silo and blast and paint machines

Currently Isle of Skye Shipyard employs about 800 local workers and forecast workforce is about 1000 additional staff when the company will work at full capacity.

CEO, Cpt. Dillan Hunt attended the groundbreaking ceremony of a 3D Printing Shipyard, the first in Sirius.

In the groundbreaking ceremony of inauguration he announced that, conforming to the modern standards are currently planned to be built an entirely new ship line for Bretonia Mining and Fabrication to answer its new role in the support of the war effort.
This new shipyard at Isle of Skye would be capable of producing 1.500.000 tons of printed 3D metal constructions monthly, this means 5 tankers with a capacity of 5.000 cargo (or “Shetland” tanker with a capacity of 5.000 tons), 10 CTU-6b "Waran" Civilian Bomber, or even renovating and refiting 8 to 10 various type ships.

The CEO viewed the model of the SHipyard and its project schemes at the monitor. While delivering a speech at the ceremony, the CEO stated that the construction of such project, the only one of its kind in Sirius, would play an important role in revolutionizing shipbuilding and in reparations of the already existing ships in Bretonia.
This project would not have been possible without the research developed by our second in comand at BMF, dearest Professor Barba Negra along with Dr. Jack Frakes from the Secret Valey Workshop, along with the remaining BMF operatives involved.
