In the first place, what was wrong about the old, fast vanilla-ish Eagle with side-shooting turret, large frame and low HP?
That one was a bit skill demanding, but very popular (as CTE VHF should be) and, imho, balanced.

Forgive the necroing but I just returned to the game and am looking for a more solid VHF than the vet returning package one I got.
Been lurking the forum but no joy as I drowned in the sheer volume of information.
Nearly went for the Raven's Talon (slightly better stats and looks great), but then I bumped into a post that said the Eagle is emminently better. Hence being here.
So, what do you think... what VHF would you recommend for an old guy re-learning the game?

Discord is just a means of communication, just like how Skype was...?
Anyway, if you want to try out different ships, you can look up what ones there are on flstat.
Sabre is another decent one for learning, all round good. Eagle is more evasive, Ravens Talon is huge but flat. Beetle is another civilian ship you could see if you like. Hawfinch is a flatter fighter, more evasive but still packs a nice punch.
