I received new orders from the Insurgency, the Torment is to be deployed to the Texas system and help with the efforts to repurpose Galveston Outpost. The station has historically functioned as a listening post for the Separatists; monitoring activity in the system, now it will serve the reborn Insurgency as its operational hub in Texas.
Frankly it will be a refreshing change of pace. While I have strict orders not to log anything regarding the operation in Inverness, I can say I look forward to the change of scenery. We'll be escorting several freighters and a repairship to the station, after which our fighter wings will initiate patrols to make sure the engineers can do their work in peace. From what with Separatist intel tells us, the station was never found by Liberty, I intend to keep it that way. Once we've established a safe perimeter I'll also be reaching out to an old friend of mine on Beaumont Base, a Junker who owes me some favors. If we can tap into the stations sensors we'll have an advance notice of any incoming Liberty forces from that direction, as well as what traffic is coming through the Jump Gate. While it's too early to reveal our increased presence in the system, it will surely prove to be beneficial in the future. Captain Lucian Perez, signing off. It took some time to get Galveston Outpost properly up and running with its new role as operational hub for the Insurgency in Texas but it is finally ready for use. As such, it only seems right to celebrate and what better way to celebrate than to launch a strike against the corrupt government. Not only will it make for a good way to test the stations new support capabilities in the region, it will also serve to inspire the civilian population of Liberty to join up with the Insurgency and strike against their corrupt oppressors.
That is the hope from the higherups anyway. I'm not sure we'll get recruits by the boatloads just by launching a few strikes in all honesty, but me and the crew are all for bringing some pain to the Liberty government after what they did in Bering. Fortunately my Junker contact at Beaumont Base came through, with the stations sensor grid available to us we were able to detect a promising Liberty Police convoy presumably on their way to the LPI Huntsville. While the insurgency holds no special love for common criminals, there is a slim chance the convoy holds some of our captured brothers and sisters. Needless to say we cannot leave this opportunity untaken, the Insurgency needs every advantage it can get and freeing experienced staff would do wonders both for our personnel staffing and morale. I ordered one of the Torments fighter wings ahead in order to disrupt the lanes, once we take out the escort Galveston Outpost will send a freighter over so we can free the prisoners. It wont be a particularly comfortable ride for them, but given the alternative I doubt they'll complain too much. Time to show Liberty the fangs of the Insurgency. It has been several months since Galveston Outpost became fully operational and the Insurgency started increasing its operations in the region. The Torment has been in several skirmishes with the Liberty Navy since my last log entry. I believe I mentioned the raid on the prison convoy; the first operation the Torment launched in the Texas system under the Insurgency banner.
The assault was a success, while the convoy was able to detect our approach they were unable to do so on time to change the outcome. Faced with the firepower of the Torments weaponry, as well as the fighter and bomber wings, they had little choice but to stand down and surrender. The prisoners were a mixed bag, the majority were common criminals but some were noteworthy. We liberated several Xenos, a gesture of respect to our prior friendly relations during the Hellfire Legion days. More importantly however, we were indeed able to recover some of our own lost troops. Not all of the confrontations were as fortuitous however; as time passed the Liberty Navy was able to reorganize and mount counter assaults. We have taken some losses as a result, but while the Torment has seen better days we persevere. I'll say this: one major advantage of having such a large asset operate in the Texas system has no doubt convinced Liberty that the Torment is the operational hub for the Insurgency in the system. Thanks to this Galveston Outposts safety should be further guaranteed for now. It is vexing though, while the former Separatist assets and personnel have come in useful, we lack the firepower to materialize any major victories. I suppose we need to be patient for now, wait for the Fleet to be fully repaired. Time will tell. We have continued our operations in the Texas system to the best of our abilities, however repeated skirmishes with Liberties forces have stretched the Torment thin. Our hull integrity has seen better days and we're down several fighters and bombers, the shield coupling has failed on more than one occasion and we've lost two of our primary turrets. In other words, operating in the field this long without routine maintenance at a shipyard has taken a considerable cost. Thankfully we have finally received orders to return to Verspucci for some much needed repairs. I'm sure the crew is looking forward to shore leave as well, some haven't stood on dirt in over a year. Funny how we take simple things like that for granted in daily life. Meanwhile I have the miserable duty of informing the family of the deceased of the fate of their loved ones. It never gets easier. I have requested a meeting with one of the admirals back on Veracruz to discuss the current status of the Insurgency. Rumors have been reaching us through my Junker contact on Beaumont Base that Insurgency forces are being fought back all over Liberty, I want to know if there is any truth to those rumors and how the admirals plan on turning things around if they are. It feels good to be back on the Torment, shore leave was fine but due to material shortages we ended up having to wait significantly longer than normally would have been necessary. Some of the crew has been temporarily reassigned to other vessels, with the personnel shortage the Insurgency is currently facing it made little sense to keep competent staff idle. Unfortunately for me that means I now find myself shorthanded on crew, what little new staff that was assigned to the Torment is wet behind the ears and will need thorough drilling before they can pull their weight. Still, I'm confident that the experienced crew members that remain will be able to show the greenhorns the ropes. The rumors I had received turned out to be true; the Insurgency has been losing head on skirmishes with the corrupt forces of Liberty. This is in no small part due to the the state of the fleet after the Legion rescued the Separatists in Bering. The repairs had taken far too long and due to the significant loss of life staffing and fielding what assets the Insurgency had was a challenge to say the least. Add in the arguing over tactics and strategies between the former Hellfire personnel and the former Separatists once the initial wave of gratitude of saving their asses in Bering faded, and we created a nice little powder keg for ourselves. While our performance in Texas has provided the Insurgency with some degree of new recruits, this hasn't come close to offsetting the losses taken. The Admirals are aware something must be done and assured me they have something up their sleeve. For now though however, they need the Torment in Kansas. With the losses in Magellan and Texas, it is becoming more and more apparent that Liberty is trying to tighten a noose around our necks. As such it is imperative the Insurgency maintains a strong presence in the Kansas system; the system Liberty is most likely to advance from should they be so foolish as to try and take the fight to us. Such an ironic twist of fate, to return to Kansas like this, the system where I first became the captain of the Torment. We'll be deployed next week and take position near Wichita, a mostly aquatic planet or so I'm told. It should provide us with ample space to hide in ambush. RE: The Torment - Torment - 05-08-2022 ![]() CAPTAINS LOG - Entry #16: Gatekeeping Date: February 5th, 829 A.S.
It has been slightly over a month since the Torment took position in the Kansas system. As I mentioned in my previous log I've had us position ourselves behind Wichita so Liberty vessels have difficulty detecting us until they are practically on top of us. This strategy has proven to be effective as we've been able to get the drop on several patrol vessels up to cruisers so far, with minimal casualties on our end. That said, prior experience has proven that Liberty has a tendency to adapt to our strategies sooner or later. As such I fear we will have to shake things up and leave the relative safety that Wichita provided us.
Unfortunately for us the Kansas system has little in the way of proper hiding spots that also give us a proper vantage point over the Vespucci jump hole. I feel we have little choice but to go into the Arkansas Ice Asteroid Field and stage ambushes from there. With a bit of luck Liberty will eventually think their intel regarding our presence around Wichita is faulty, making it relatively safe to use again. For now I've dispatched a fighter wing to see if they can find a suitably dense part of the field that would be able to hide the Torment. Worst come to worst we'll have to manually move some of the asteroids into position to make appropriate cover. Meanwhile reports have continued to come in of Insurgency operations obtaining Pyrrhic victories at best in the surrounding systems, there are even rumors that Bretonia is getting involved on behalf of Liberty, though no official communique has arrived yet from headquarters to verify those claims. If the Insurgency has to fight off two houses in its current state I fear for our future. RE: The Torment - Torment - 05-08-2022 ![]() CAPTAINS LOG - Entry #17: Withdrawing Date: March 26th, 829 A.S.
The situation in the Kansas system has turned for the worst. While we've been able to hold our own thus far, scouts report a significant Navy force heading straight towards us, among them carrier Ohio, supposedly the latest and greatest they have to offer. Command has ordered the Torment back to Vespucci, against such overwhelming numbers we wouldn't be able to last more than a few minutes at most and we're no good to anyone dead.
Yielding Kansas has effectively cut us off from Liberty, as well as the Insurgency troops positioned in Texas. Meanwhile it seems the rumors turned out be true; Bretonia has gotten themselves involved and is positioned to press on from Magellan. This means Vespucci will be surrounded on all sides except Inverness. Treating with Auxesia and the Crayter Republic might be the only way to get supplies to Veracruz at this point, but with hostile forces this close to our doorstep we can't exactly spare any vessels. *sigh* At any rate, the Torment is to report to Fort Leniex on the 15th of April, assuming the fighting hasn't entered Vespucci at that point. If it hasn't, we'll be getting some repairs and maintenance. With a bit of luck the Torment will be in proper fighting shape before Liberty makes its move. The Insurgency may be down, but we're not out yet. RE: The Torment - Torment - 05-08-2022 ![]() CAPTAINS LOG - Entry #18: The Last Hurrah Date: May 1st, 829 A.S.
Today was our day of judgement, the beginning of our final stand. Reports reached us this afternoon that Liberty forces had invaded Vespucci en masse, lead by the Delaware. Many of the former Separatists appear to have up and left out of the blue, they must have been planning this ever since the frustrations between them and the former legionnaires started to flare up. As a result what remains of the fleet is horrible outnumbered, the battlecruiser Triton is making a valiant stand in front of Veracruz together with what brave souls remain.
While the fighting had already begun, I'd be damned if I didn't do what I could to help. I ordered the Torment to be released from Fort Leniex, not all repairs were finished yet but it would have to do. The majority of the crew was still on Veracruz, so we were operating with a skeleton crew. Despite these circumstances we launched and were able to join the fight shortly after. The fight had already been going on for half an hour by the time we arrived, but by the sheer mass of ships and weapon fire colliding from both sides one would be forgiven in thinking the fight had only just begun. The invading force was led by the Delaware, making it the flagship and thus a prime target on Liberty side. Meanwhile the Insurgency fleet followed the Triton after its inspiring refusal to bow down to the invaders; its loss would make for a large blow to morale. We fought as best we could, taking down a total of seven hostile capital ships despite being outnumbered. Eventually even the Delaware fell to Insurgent weaponry. Unfortunately the Triton had to retreat shortly after, having taken significant damage in the battle. We bought a brief respite from the invasion but took significant losses. The Torment suffered considerable damage though it still remains operational. As I'm recording this log nanny ships from the surface are scouring the remains in the battlefield for survivors and usable salvage. Most of the crew that was stuck on the surface of Veracruz ended up leaving with the ongoing evacuation efforts, some however, have opted to rejoin the Torment and see this through to the end. We'll be heading back to Fort Leniex soon while we still have a brief moment of rest, something about last minute modifications to the Torment. Honestly at this point I'll take anything that can give us an edge. RE: The Torment - Torment - 05-08-2022 ![]() CAPTAINS LOG - Entry #19: Improvements Date: May 8th, 829 A.S.
They weren't lying when they said they had modifications to make to the Torment. During the recovery operation in the scrap field (courtesy of Liberty's invasion), one of the nanny ships managed to salvage a semi operational cloaking device from one of the Atlantis carrier wrecks. While even the 'mighty' Atlantis is smaller than an Arbiter, it seems the engineers attempts to modify and install the technology on the Torment have proven to be...somewhat effective.
The cloak is by no means perfect, in fact it's downright unreliable since it wasn't made with a vessel of this size in mind, still, it'll prove handy in a pinch. Reports are coming in daily from skirmishes across the Vespucci system between Insurgency and Liberty forces. Kansas is all but inaccessible and Magellan is seemingly closely being monitored, it's becoming increasingly obvious that Inverness is the only real way out of the system for now and it won't be long before Liberty tries to blockade that exit as well. Armed with this new cloaking device however, I have decided the Torment will remain in the system for as long as possible to help with fighting off these invaders. Should the time come that we have no other option but to retreat, we'll place our fates in this unpredictable technology and try to slip away unnoticed. Our odds of success will be unpredictable at best, but our presence alone will greatly improve the odds for all our brothers and sisters trying to leave the system. The Torment will not fall. |
