We haven't really found a good spot for the Asco torpedo yet. It's probably underwhelming -- but we're looking to sort that out before the patch hits. It using a 1:1 copy of the Sunslayer torpedo visuals isn't very creative either, though, so a proper overhaul would also include an actually unique effect.

Like every other gunboat however, the Asco can just switch to any other conventional forward gun, even if we fail to make the Asco torpedo particularly effective.

Yeah, the Asco torpedo and Jaguar +1 Gun made Brigand stuff unique, hope to see that in the game - complete symmetry is well, boring, Gallia deserves to be more exotic, be it that, gates, or that thing we are requesting for sub-ID on [GN]

But I understand like with econ that you guys want to get out the raw basic stuff, make sure all works and balances and then add frills once basics settle

Does this also affect Gunships without Forward Guns? Or have those been updated to have Forward Guns as well?

yes, all gunships now have forward guns, be those external or internal.
