For screwing around, Garrysmod IS the best game.

You build whatever the hell you want and you have fun with it.

Once I built a catapult and had fun for like an hour and a half shooting random stuff like cars on zombies and others.

I'd have to agree with garrysmod, however, i've recently discovered, smod for HL2. Put on god mode and bullet time effects (slo-mo), start killing people by shooting headshots, ninja knifing them, or whacking them with a shovel. RPGs are just as satisfying.
