Characters based on characters - reavengitair - 11-17-2009 It's not really the names that matter, it's more the personality, etc. Of course, both goes to yet another level. Quote:If it's an obscure character that fits well in FL, or has no real background, or is an adorable Anime Girl (the latter are highly valued for use by the Consortium), then nobody's likely to know/care anyway. If it's something like Batman or Dick Cheney. Then no. Gaian Suiseiseki coming right up! (my avatar/personal picture, if you are confused) Characters based on characters - Drake - 11-17-2009 I actually think using known TV/movieterary/whatver character names is more jarring to the RP than using one of their personalities under a different name. Someone who based their personality on Mal from Firefly wouldn't obviously be Mal to everyone he RP'd with if his name was, say, Dave. But people see Malcolm.Reynolds and, no matter what the character actually is or how they're RP'd, people think of Mal from Firefly. So, basically, I think stealing names is worse than stealing personalities. Using the actual background/history/whatever of a character is about as bad as you can get, mostly because that background likely doesn't mesh well with Freelancer/Discovery. Characters based on characters - Kuze - 11-17-2009 I never understand why must people use names or backgrounds from movies/books/etc. Every time I make a new char on a RP server I combine different names, surnames to create a name that I like. Even finding a suitable foto for a character is sometimes a matter of hours. These is a RP server, so one can say that its ok to RP as Malcolm Raynolds or John Crichton for example....but these import are only showing the lack of imagination. When I am unable to create a story (for example my bad English) or my char, then I not start importing...I just not make a story. Characters based on characters - Doc Holliday - 11-17-2009 I'm one of the guilty parties here. My name says it all. But, I did alter the character so as it wouldn't be the Doc Holliday we all know from movies. I expanded his knowledge and tweaked his ideology, using his resurrection as a base for him to explore a religious side. My feeling is, if you can RP it and do so convincingly, I'm fine with it. Characters based on characters - Aoyagi - 11-17-2009 Well unless it's some kind of famous name I don't care. And of course importing the whole character is bad idea. Bad. Characters based on characters - Dab - 11-17-2009 Voted no and no, come up with something original. Characters based on characters - Durandal - 11-17-2009 Voted no and no, although most of my characters names are obscure references and inside jokes. Characters based on characters - Altaris - 11-17-2009 Im no for both either. It is stupid to see Cortez or Sam Witwicky (>_>). Im just wondering who else will honor Discovery with his/her presence. Harry Potter? Characters based on characters - Zero755 - 11-17-2009 Voted no for both, using a picture of a character is ok since not all of us are that great at drawing and stuff. I also dont really mind the use of the names. Some people just cant come up with names to save their lives, I am one of them. But if I use a name none of the FL character's persona is based on the Game character's persona. Characters based on characters - Corsair - 11-17-2009 Everything of mine is original. I make a new character, invent a name, and then build it from there. I have a Starflier named Zach.Grey, still on Erie. I'll make a story and personality for him later. Then, I'll outfit him. I frown on unoriginal characters. EDIT: I wasn't thinking about Chuck when I made Jack. |
