1 you can begin with minning in colorado for copper (selling that in one station in the same system) and silver, with some cash u can get a rhino, and mine a few more.
2 for the next ship read the readme file txt it has the stats and prices of the ships (at the end of it) so that will help you alot, to choose the proper ship.
3 try to get a map of the different systems (there is one in modb i think but only of general system not of each system itself).
4 play a bit and try to read the forums that will help alot too.
5 very important read the rules of the server you can avoid problems.
try not to ask too much to the same ppl (give them a break).
and well discover the mod/game...HAVE FUN.

Excellent advice folks. I've mined my way from Starflier to Defender to CSV now and am well on my way to a bitchin Camara:)
