Currently you are less friendly with the station owners Gateway, than gateway is with the IMG. Therefore if an IMG ship is in the vincinity, Gateway will honour their friendliness with IMG, and help the IMG in attacking you.
You can try to take a gateway bribe or do some missions for them, so you have more than 6.5 bars green with Gateway. That way the station will not help a passing by IMG ship against you, since you now are more friendly with Gateway than the IMG npc's.
