To a brighter future? - Wolfs Ghost - 07-20-2012 Prospect Mall, Planet Cambridge, Cambridge System Whistling and humming could be heard.
"God save our gracious Queen, Long live our noble Queen, God save The Queen. Send her victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us: God save The Queen. O Lord, our God, arise, Scatter her enemies, And make them fall. Confound their politics, Frustrate their knavish tricks, On Thee--- Erm, this was recording? Damn it. End log." -- Ship Log 041, Austin Goodman Austin stepped off the bus and took in a deep breath of air as the wind blew in from the west. He smiled lightly to himself as he began walking towards the entrance of the bustling mall. Before stepping inside, he looked at both of his bandaged wrists, the pain was tolerable for now. After which, he stepped through the sliding glass door, partially wishing he hadn't given up his military jacket so he could put his hands in them. It was unlike Austin to go to one of the most prominent malls on all of Cambridge, after all he wasn't a social butterfly, preferring to avoid such locations. But today was different, today he had a purpose for being here. That purpose? Getting a new jacket to replace the one he lost during his escape from being held hostage by a Corsair Smuggler. This was his only goal, to get in and get out without much else. Just enough time to catch the next bus to get back to the space port so he could take a transport to the Norfolk. Of course, things played differently when he heard a little kid shouting, "Mommy! Mommy! I see daddy!" He just happened to glance over to see that a little girl was pointing at him, and a few passing looked over at him as they walked by. "That's daddy! The one with the bandaged hands!" The little girl repeated. By this time, Austin's curiosity had set in and he slowly came to a stop, raising his eyebrow at the little girl and the crowd before looking around to see if anyone else happened to have bandages on their hands. It was a short while later that he felt a tugging at his hand, at which point he looked down to see a little girl standing next to him. It took a couple of seconds before he knelt down in front of the girl, smiling lightly and trying not to offend her. "Love, I'm not your father." He said, still holding a smile. "Yes you are! I saw you on the news when I was three!" He laughed lightly, just looking up to see the girls mother walk over. He slowly got to his feet as she came to a stop in front of him. He watched as she placed her hands on her daughter's shoulders. "I am so... so very sorry, Sir." She said lightly laughing, "Her father served in the Armed Forces, and he's been deployed for three years. Last I heard, he served on the MacDuff, when that new house's military force pushed into Tau-31 forcing the MacDuff back, he... was listed as MIA." "I'm sorry to hear that. But she mentioned seeing her father on the news? Was he ever on the news?" "It's been a few months since those events, I'm sure if he was alive he would try to get in contact with me, or someone he knew would if he was dead." She looked down at her daughter before looking back up at Austin, then she let out a light gasp. "I knew I recognized you from somewhere. You're the guy who saved Prime Minister George Mountbatten. That would explain why she thought you were her father." "Yeah, that's me." He replied, slightly disgusted by the sudden change of topic on her part. "What's his name?" "Jeremy Godwin, he's a lieutenant assigned to the fifth infantry division. Oh, and I forgot to introduce myself, I'm Maria Godwin." She replied, holding her hand out towards him. He shook her hand and nodded lightly. "Well, Misses Godwin. I'll keep my eyes open for any information regarding your husband." "You will?" "Aye. All of our men and women fighting deserve to come home." "Oh, thank you. Thank you so much." Maria ecstatically replied, stepping around her daughter and giving him a hug. Once she was done hugging him, she stepped back, wearing a concerned expression, "But... how do you plan on getting in contact with me?" "I work for the Armed Forces, I'll be able to contact you, don't worry." He smiled lightly, "I need to be going, as well. Came here to get something, and I don't want to be late for my bus." He said kneeling down and gently patting the little girl on her shoulder. "I'll bring your father home." "Thank you." Maria said, her daughter giggling lightly as Austin stood up. "You're welcome." He replied, turning away from the mother and daughter and started on his way again. To a brighter future? - Wolfs Ghost - 07-31-2012 Cambridge Military Hospital, Planet Cambridge, Cambridge
"Skipping past any of the complicated details, because I lived through them and I won't necessarily want to hear myself explaining the details over a recording.
Here I am thinking I'm the type of guy who goes and does the right thing. Prior to actually having any feelings for her I did what any officer of the Crown would do... send a transmission stating the facts that someone wasn't who they said they actually were. Right? Well, sure that's the right thing to do, especially if you thought it was actually going to be the last time you saw said person of interest. But... was it the right thing to do when you find yourself waking up in a hospital to see that person sitting next to your bed when you thought you'd never see them again, and it turns out they saved your life? Most likely not... though here I am finding that I actually have feelings for this person. As I go through the day doing whatever I can to make it up to her, cooking breakfast in the morning, taking her back to the family ranch to get away from the city, only to work up the courage to actually tell her what I did... and to ruin whatever there was between us in a matter of seconds. Women are complicated... Oh and I've been grounded from space flight for a while, damn wrists." -- Ship Log 042, Austin Goodman Shouting came from behind closed doors from one person, while another was talking in a gentle tone. "What do you mean I'm grounded? There is a war to fight out there and you're putting one of... correction, the only ace you have on the ground? Are you kidding me!" "Lieutenant Goodman, keep in mind that this is the second time you've passed out due to blood loss, and the first time it happened you were captured by a Reaver. Now, you almost died if it wasn't for an anonymous caller who informed us that you had collapsed at your ranch." "That anonymous caller was Nancy Sweetwater, damn it. The terrorist that we're suppose to be arresting. If you had actually went after her, we wouldn't be having this discussion!" "Austin," Another voice chimmed in, this time it was Doctor Carla Wellings rather than an Intelligence Agent, "If we hadn't saved you, you would've been dead." "Damn it, get me out of the hospital and into a ship. I know where Nancy would've gone, and I know I can bring her in." "No, Austin. You're not leaving here until you're fit for duty, which you aren't." "Doctor Wellings is right, we'll send Agents after her, while you recover." "Get these damn drips off of me, if you aren't going to let me go then I'll walk out of here myself." Austin shouted, reaching over for the IV drip that was in his right arm, starting to pull at it before Doctor Carla grabbed his arm. "Austin, knock it off." "You have to let me go. I will take a team with me, just please let me go. I know where she's at and I will bring her in. Please Carla." "Fine. Get the IVs out of him. We'll take a team to her location, she better be there Austin, or you'll be facing court martial. Understood?" The man spoke up. Austin looked over at him and gave a light nod. "Get me a uniform, body armor, and a pistol, and we have a deal." To a brighter future? - Wolfs Ghost - 08-11-2012 10th Street, Greenwich Apartments, Crichton Springs, Planet Denver, Colorado System
"An endless cycle. It's all an endless cycle. A bloody endless cycle that continues to repeat itself, and ends with the exact same result. Insanity, has it really boiled down to that?
I'll let you decide, Austin..." -- Ship Log 043, Austin Goodman "Put your hands where I can see them!" He shouted, standing just out of arms reach, his thumb flipping the safety off. The pistol aimed at her shoulder, a precaution in case she didn't follow his directions. "Now!" Everything that happened next felt as if it was in slow motion. He watched her pull something from her jacket as she spun around to face him. The pistol went off... and he heard a familiar laugh coming up from behind him, "Every shadow is your weakness..." An all to familiar voice that sent chills down his spine. "Gods damn it!" Austin shouted, his eyes wide open as he stared at the ceiling of the apartment. His chest visibly raising up and down as he breathed heavily. Slowly propping himself up, he heaved a heavy sigh and took a look around the apartment room. The cold air was barely noticeable as he slowly moved out from under the heavy covers to sit on the edge of the bed. "It... it was just a dream. Calm down..." Crichton Springs Space Port, Planet Denver, Colorado System
Two hours later... "Planet Denver seems to be a lovely place." He stated out loud to himself as he shoved his hands into his jacket pockets, attempting to keep them warm - but obviously failing as chills ran through him. "Never been to Denver, what's it like? Sounds almost like Cambridge... I should visit it sometime." He continued, outloud... obviously annoyed with his own suggestion. He groaned at how cold it was and began making his way towards his personal fighter, glaring at it as the ship came into view, a glare that made a couple of dock-hands look over at Austin, then towards the ship - as if the ship had done something wrong. Austin's pace quickened as he made his final approach towards the ship, quickly pulling his PDA out of his pants pocket and typing in a code which caused the cargo bay door to partially open, within seconds Austin slipped into the cargo bay door and closed it behind him. Without second thought as to how warm the ship was, he made his way to the pilot's seat, only to stop dead in his tracks. "She obviously likes you, Austin." He shook his head lightly, reaching out and turning the seat slightly to the side as he sat down in the chair. Strapping himself into the ship just before flipping various switches, listening to the ship roar to life. He grabbed is helmet and placed it over his head, taking in a deep breath and checking his wrists... no blood, which was a good sign as far as he was concerned. |
