OORP "Hanging out" - Hyperion - 03-05-2008

i think i mentioned it before, somewhere...

the best would be a new starting system, deadend, only connection to New York. It would have a few lawfull, and a few unlawfull bases, mineable fileds, etc
the system would be for new players, so they will have time to read the rules, learn to RP, and when they reach level 30, or level 40, they need to leave that system, and start RP-ing in new york.

Get a group of Xenos together and clear out. I'll make a character just for that!

OORP "Hanging out" - DW-Duck - 03-05-2008

I concur that the constant OORP chatter is annoying. Some one actually asked me where I was from while we were flying through Hokkaido being fired upon by the GC???? I had to remind him that we were traders, running for our lives and that I don't break RP just to chat. I would rather play for hours with no break in radio silence than answer somebodies idiotic questions that don't even relate to the game. Keep in mind, that legitimate Freelancer or Disco questions are ok....... legitimate is not "hey what trade run are you making? or where's the jump hole to ...?".

Anyway OORP chatter Stinks!!!!

Don't answer. Don't listen. Don't help. Don't play with them until they can produce a line in RP. Don't reply to them in system if you have to, take it to private. More disheartening than having a bunch of new people saying random unmarked stuff in system chat, is having older players, who should know better, breaking RP to reply to the idiocy.

"Do not argue with an idiot. Other people may find it difficult to tell who the idiot really is."

Instruct and warn them. If they keep willingly harassing people, just report them.

Agreed. But make sure that when you do go to private it actually goes thru properly; I used one of the chat commands and mistyped someone's name so it came out in system: me, OOC reminding someone not to use OOC in system... whoops...:$

The idea in theory is good, however, dropping new players in an OORP environment could lead them in the wrong direction as to how the rest of the server behaves. Basically, you would end up with a gate to hell with various OORP demons pouring out. The only way to ensure good RP among new players is to have it smack them in the face when they undock.

Just my opinion.

I can almost picture the JH to Connecticut as being a fiery portal to Hell, with little demon like ships exiting it from time to time.

Jokes aside, I agree with you, Monk. It's easier to educate the "kids".

Y'know i actually got laughed at openly for asking for permission to dock on NY a while back. some guy went...

"lolz n00b, you don't have to ask permission to dock, are you someone's whipping boy or summat?"

If he had been physically near me at the time i would have removed his face with a spade.

I love rp and I think the person who said that to you is an idiot. He was clearly the noob, not you. As we all know I fly a Junker cruiser, and that is a "warship" and police don't fully trust Junkers, so if I plan to dock at Manhattan I ask for permission. It is rp and good, but the last time I asked there was so much oorp that they probably didnt see my request.

I remember once it was just me and another in a system and we talked oorp, but when someone else entered the system we grouped up and kept our oorp to group chat.

I have lots of rp ideas and some involve New York. It would be nice to actually carry them out and receive rp responses, but what hinders that is constant oorp chat that drowns out the rp that us rpers are trying to do. For example I plan to bring some Grau family convoys through, and I would give the convoy designation and ask for permission to proceed to Manhattan space, after all a Junker convoy in Manhattan space may be suspicious. I could ask and the military players could allow it or not allow it, but there is simply too much oorp at the moment for me to do more like that.

I am reminded of how one of the people on these forums has the avatar with uncle sam saying "I want you to never use oorp in system chat!" Love that Avatar! Sure there is nothing wrong with getting to know someone on a RL level, but keep it to private chat.

Now I realize there are some exceptions. Like once when I was helping someone with a transfer, I docked with Manhattan and launched again being as the server is prone to crashing and I didn't want to loose what I had. I did a message with the "//" telling all police players there I was just docking for that purpose.

One thing I really think could be different is how people ask where stuff is. One they could ask a high level player in private chat or phrase it in rp chatter. For example, One player, Harvester_3, wanted to know what SA stood for and he phrased his question as follows: "This unit requests the designation of the callsign SA" Sounded great to me, he was rping like he was a robotic unit and was still able to ask what he wanted.

Another example would be when a cruiser patrol I met was looking for a system they said, "This is cruiser Scornstar requesting the coordinates to the ****** system." I can't remember the system name.

Sometimes people say, "Where can I get a good ship for xxxx amount of credits?" First off, I like the challeng of exploring on my own...after all it is discovery, not get-the-locations-from-everyone-for-everything, but some don't. Personally I think it would sound better and more rpish to say something like, "Would someone be willing to upload the coordinates of a shipyard that would be able to build me a freighter for a very good price?"

Then someone could respond by saying something like "Planet Hamburg on the Hamburg system produces a very nice freighter and can build it for you for under one million."

To me I think stuff like that just sounds better and it isnt oorp then, at least I don't think.

Anyways to recap.
1)That guy is the noob, you are not.
2)OORP chatter like there were screenshots posted of is just dumb and has no place here.
3)That OORP hinders good rp that myself and many others wish to do here.
4)That avatar is awesome!
5)There may be a few times oorp is system chat is needed, but it is not often that it is.
6)Much can be phrased in more rpish terms.

Agreed. And methinks some experienced people making a xenos battlegroup to demolish NY would do a lot of good for the server.

Not going to happen, we have enough problems getting that many Xenos together in the first place, and then we'd just be accused of being PvP whores, and that I ain't happy with. I don't want to see more Xenos flapping around manhattan thinking that Xeno means kill everything. The Xeno affiliation is not just an excuse to fight, it has RP connotations and I'd be much happier if people respected that. My opinion.
