In search of Von Rohe's ship - Strichev - 04-04-2012 Corsair capital ship raids. Lead by mainly inexpirienced commanders. That is, if one takes the fact that the normal age of a battleship commander in Rheinland is forty, hard to believe. Masiter glanced at the projection. A large dark object kept falling out of focus of the camera as small dots swarmed around it. From time to time a blindingly bright light lit up, pulsed in many variations of blue, then faded away. Like a swarm of sparks blazed the defensive turrets' fire as they kept shifting targets in a rather futile attempt to hit the overly nimble snubs. It didn't resemble the government financed propaganda films of ambiguous nature in any way at all. Well, it can't be that bad. Otherwise they wouldn't have survived long enough to mine a single diamond. [color=#000000]There is no need to wait for Frau Pennybrooke. I doubt her team is up for the magnitude of our research here. Of course, Herr Bauer in his armchair back on Berlin may have his own ideas. Who knows why he promotes that oh-so-famous researcher. Perhaps he has some personal benefits from her! There was not a hint of anxiety in his voice. The two archaeologists didn't seem to show any signs of worry, even as the battle on the projection raged on. I completely agree with you Herr Sigmund, time is of essence. Schutz and Deidus will soon be in opposition. And that remembers me of one problem. It probably takes quite some time to reach Deidus from Solaris. Won't that mean that anyone working on site will remain greatly isolated for extended periods of time? I mean, the radiation prevents any long lasting voyages in open space. There was something on Karl's conciseness that kept troubling him greatly. With a worried expression he decided to lighten hi soul by a carefully selected question. Before that he took a sip of the now not so cold beer that he still had. Well, there is one question I would like to ask. Everyone except Woelffen, whose eyes were still fixed on the projection looked intently at him. What would happen, this is strictly hypothetical, if one of the diamonds we saw when we got here got stuck in one's sole? In search of Von Rohe's ship - Karst - 04-09-2012 A fairly tall woman in a modest spaceship suit and curly red hair, tied in a bun, enters the bar.... "A dark beer please, and could you tell me if that New Berlin museum representative is here?" Surely I'm too late....I mean, I suppose a museum employee would have to be patient, but....Damn all these disturbances. She scans the bar for someone that doesn't look like a miner In search of Von Rohe's ship - Daumann Heavy Construction - 04-10-2012 Both Woelffen and Sigmund stared at Karl after hearing his last question. Both laughed Well Herr Karl, You really caught us off-guard with that last one Ja, but seriously we are not that totalitarian control-freak monters you might think we are, at least not the ones down here in the Omegas. Most of our diamonds are used for industrial purposes, such small ores are simply not useful; of course if there is a report of someone possibly abusing his shoes to smuggle diamonds... Sigmund chuckled. Woelffen looked more serious this time; perhaps Karl's question was actually more than a simple joke. We have never had a case like that mein Herr. Sigmund knew from Woelffen's tone, he took Karl's question as a serious one despite he laughed, maybe it was a serious question after all. Ermm, regarding radiation, we have means to fight it, a better analysis of planet Deidus will have to be done to ensure a successful expedition; to be honest, I'd say radiation is the lesser of the problems, of course it will be taken into consideration. When diamonds mix with other elements, they form a very good radiation resistant material; the process is of course too expensive right now to be considered for commercial applications, and will probably be like that for the next hundred years while we find a way to harness more energy more efficitently, ermmm... Sigmund was distracted for a second when he looked at the entrance of the bar. His silence caught the atention of the others who looked at the entrance too. Excellent, perfect timing! That must be the other member of your crew, I mean, the mercenary and bounty hunter women around here don't look like women at all. The bartender pointed at the table where the archaelogists and the Daumann representatives were sitting. Sigmund stared at the big glass windows, he got too excited again to realize he was giving out industrial research. He had to control himself or he could end up orbiting the star in a escape pod forever. In search of Von Rohe's ship - Strichev - 04-10-2012 Maister didn't miss the opportunity to comment the women that was heading to their table, after all, good atmosphere is always a good thing. Especially if you are on a space station in the wast black nothingness owned by a notoriously austerity imposing company. I'm fairly certain that Bauer would have kept her as a personal advisor or something like that, if he had only seen her. As both Daumann employees laughed somewhat forcefully she had already approached the table. Karl, like a true gentleman took the initiative. Frau Katherine Pennybrooke I presume? In search of Von Rohe's ship - Karst - 04-11-2012 Katherine smiles as she walks up to the table. "That would be me. I'm terribly sorry it took me so long to get here. But I've got my team and all the equipment I need....normally. I haven't heard too many details, but I know we're planning an expedition to Planet Deidus....I've surveyed it several times, and sent a robotic probe to the surface, but I lost the connection before it was able to transmit any data." she sighs heavily to catch her breath "Sorry, I'm getting ahead of myself here. Katherine Pennybrooke, at your service. May I join you?" In search of Von Rohe's ship - Strichev - 04-13-2012 For a moment both Maister and Karl stared in amazement. They have spent months planning everything, carefully considering and re-considering all options. Then they embarked on a hellish quest of raising funds for the endeavour. Despite the fact that New Berlin Museum is a well known name in Sirius it took almost half a year to raise 10 000 000 standard credits. Equipping a specially built freighter took 4 more months of negotiating and barging for a fair price plus a trip to Kusari. And now there they were, listening to woman they have never heard of before, claiming that she had a research vessel manned by an independent team capable of sending a robotic probe to the surface of Planet Deidus. Well, that is rather, rather fascinating indeed. Please, feel free to join us in our debate. Anyway, I'm Karl Schroeder of the Museum's planetary archaeological department. He then pointed in the general direction of Franz. And my respected colleague Franz Maister. I do believe that our, so to speak hosts, can introduce themselves... In search of Von Rohe's ship - Daumann Heavy Construction - 04-14-2012 Sigmund nervously smiled at Katherine. Gu...Guten tag, I am Sigmund... Bauer. And... I am Gustav Woelffen, base commander and basically in charge. An honor to meet you Frau Pennybrooke. Gustav stared at her for a few seconds. then looked towards the projector, the fight was almost over, no serious damage on either side of the dogfight could be seen. Sigmund looked a bit more confident now that the initial contact was done. I am a surveyor, I will be the corporation representative during the operation, and will of course help with the planning and execution of it. You say you have sent drones before? Interesting, perhaps you are not aware of the microdust that floods circuits and damages them, I'd would definitely like to check those drones of yours. Gustav looked at Sigmund with a condescending look. When Sigmund wasn't spilling out industrial research at everyone out of excitement, he was either saying too much nonsense or not saying anything at all. May I ask where are you from mein Frau? Gustav smiled at her, though it looked a bit forced. In search of Von Rohe's ship - Karst - 04-14-2012 Katherine beamed at the four with barely contained excitement as she sat down. "A pleasure to meet all of you. I'm very much looking forward to this...." She looks around, smiles, and takes a deep breath "I suppose I should start with the question of where I'm from. My family has a modest estate on Elliot island, a small island in Planet Cambridge's northern hemisphere. A very remote place.... These days though, I'd consider myself just as much at home in distant space. My research vessel is a type T-833-GB gunboat class explorer ship, better known as "Ahoudori". We've got a whole lot of extra research equipment, a large computer setup mainly for running things like predictive geological and atmospheric analyses, a capital ship class scanner array and extra reactors to power it all, and of course my trusted scientific team. I admit the whole setup is a bit chaotic and a lot of grav tape was used, but it works very well for what we've been doing. About those robotic probes....They're small units manufactured by the IMG. They're covered in ceramic heat shielding tiles and are meant to be launched into the low orbit of a planet, slowly descend, deploy their parachute if atmospheric conditions allow it, and all the while send back data from an array of sensor equipment. They're generally very reliable, and I mentioned I did send one to the surface of Deidus....but alas, I never found out what happened to it. It didn't send any data past the lower thermosphere. I had read about the dust particles and didn't expect much. I just figured there was no harm in trying. I'm confident, however, that a solution can be found for this, and that's one of the things we're working on.... But I fear I'm getting ahead of myself once again." She looks around slightly nervously In search of Von Rohe's ship - Strichev - 04-19-2012 Maister, who had been silent for quite a while suddenly felt the need to indicate that he himself was in charge of the Exoarchaeology section. A department with greater significance than Planetary research. Just as he opened his mouth to speak he changed his mind. What am I doing right here? Entering a childish competition of "my toy is better"? So he ended up looking like a fish gasping for air. Definitely not the most pleasant or dignifying sight. So, in order to save what little dignity he had left he decided to accelerate things a bit. At least the woman looked like she wouldn't mind a slightly increased speed of the wheels that turned everything. No, meine Frau. The planets aren't standing still while we're sitting in a bar. And so isn't the object of our interest. It may sink to unreachable depths or even fall apart. I do believe that it wouldn't hurt to shift a gear or two higher. He then looked at everyone participating in the conversation. So, shall we? I mean, the beer is getting warm. Karl chuckled as he pointed at the window, through which the gloomy surface of planet Schutz, shimmering in faint lighting of active volcanoes could be seen. Yes, I guess that even the best scenery loses its charm over time. Our plans so far, Frau Pennybrooke. A map of Omega 11 flickered into life, being emitted from a small device placed on the table. Maister ceased the opportunity to make himself noted. A small depot, perhaps an orbiting ship could be set up in low orbit around Deidus. Thus it would be shielded from the intense radiation. It would also solve the problem of supplies as it would eliminate the need for constant crossings of the Abgrund. The aspect of actually reaching down to the wreck still remains unclear. That is where the knowledge and experience of the DHC step in. In search of Von Rohe's ship - Strichev - 04-19-2012 //delete this post |
