Having been through a mod change where factions and bases are added before...
There are utility scripts out there to "convert" characters but if they miss something some players come out with starfliers and zero cash or even completely unreadable. You will see them on log-on but get kicked trying to enter game with them.
A wipe would be great--kinda--as it will drop a lot of politics for a short while, give everyone a chance to re-tag or rename their characters and everyone starts on a level playing field (oh my--New York is going to be a madhouse for awhile).
I'd assume (and hope) a wipe doesn't occur until a new mod is released.
Figures, the French show up and we have to start the whole universe over for them again :rolleyes:

But some people might just stop alltogether. I may not want to continue in some of the factions I'm in and the community would suffer. Why would you shoot yourself in the foot before you get new skates?

if a player-wipe would happen i would probably be put off playing discovery as i dont fancy spending another 5+ months getting my flagship again and then another few months getting all my other ships upto scratch and all sorted out with their reps and tags
unlike most/half/some of the people here i havent got the time to play this game allday everyday and get everything back up where it was in a matter of weeks and frankly spending all that time just to get myself back where i am right now isnt really appealing to me

I'm inclined to believe that there won't be a player wipe, nor do I think that a player wipe is actually necessary. Although I have often been told it would be. But the problem is, if a player wipe did occur it would destroy every faction (no more faction tagged/ID'ed players, no monies to equip faction players/recruits with etc). Then of course there's people's personal, "freelance" characters not affiliated with anyone. Then of course there's all the rep fixing and trading again.
Most of my characters have guard tags, some of them with Zoner Guard tags. Then of course I have an advanced train, and billions of credits (90% of which is spent on the GC faction I lead anyway). I really wouldn't be willing to redo all that again. It would just feel like the last 6 months has been completely and utterly pointless, in terms of my playing Freelancer online. I'm sure lots of others would say the same.

Personally, I'm not worried.
Yes, it would suck on multiple levels if a wipe had to happen, but if it has to happen, it will.
It'll hurt, but Disco will survive.
Some will leave & not look back...but a larger number would stay. (although most of 'em will complain about it for weeks.)
I've spent untold hours building up my characters just like everyone else, but if I sign on one day to find that I lost everything, I would simply rebuild.
I think of it like a naturally occuring forest fire...It's sad, it's ugly & it stinks after the rain, but when it grows back, it's 'lushier'
I'll just kick back & deal w/ whatever happens when it happens & keep the 'Chicken Little' inside my head that wants to scream "omf'ng!! the sky is falling" in cheque till I know for a fact if the sky is going to fall or not.

If a player wipe were to occur, it would make alot of people upset.
Plus some people literally explored every corner of Discovery as well as have a lot of money and rare equipment like SPYGLASS SCANNER which I have only seen one of in my time on Disco. Plus fractions would get hurt the most, flag ships, banks, armories, everything.

My vote: God I hope not. I just got my 9th guard tag, and I have a LOT of characters. If there's gonna be a wipe, I'd have to drop AT LEAST Vic Chonody and my [M], and probably more besides. My coming back to the server is highly likely, but then again there's a chance that I might just give up...
