There is also the option of combining the huge amount of NPC names and surnames that you find on all the bases and in space.

True, although some of them seem... a bit weird. Anyway, these resources can't hurt, can they? NPCs don't have giant backgrounds defining what the names mean or where they come from, now do they?

One problem with NPC's names:

I've found a few that have TOTALLY ooRP names. (mostly BHG though, go figure.) Example(s) Peekaboo Street. My dad's name. (seriously) James Hendricks. (Jimmy Hendrix anyone?) It's not perfect. (Jimmy was a ZnO too)

Bump. I found wikipedia's humongous surname list for German names, the others shouldn't be hard to find. Hope this is useful.

Heh I used to table-play rpg with friends in a pirate's campaign put around the 17/18th century, around that time I made a boklet with 4000 or so names for ships pulled from different sources, games, movies, books, tv, history books, etc.

My pirate flagship was the "Malevolence" and the sister ship was "Medianoche" (Midnight) Both ships painted black and playing sort of romantic style pirate myself, you know the kind, take the women and the children for ransom, and some men, the rest leave them on their ship to their own luck.

But the name of the ship is always important;)
