dealing with smaller targets at speeds about 700 km/h with 600m/s guns will be impossible.

i already know that... please read all of what i say.

I mean that the relation between target's speed and projectile speed only matters, not size as you wont even hit a super big object in front of you if your projectile speed is almost zero.

Wat? You wanna shoot the empty space and kill?
Quote:700 km/h
He meant 200 m/s here

If you cut Hayabusa's linear dimension in half, it'll be no bigger than it's pilot. It's a super suit, not a fighter then.

RE: ships fitting into a dock module - Hidamari - 12-15-2012

by "the game" i meant discovery and its current weapon balance, and im willing to acknowledge that decreasing the size of the fighters would rape the balance of fighters and bombers with the current weapon stats as they are.

which is why i meant that they need to be big to be hittable in this game.

since rebalancing everything in the game is just not going to happen, it would be nice if the balance of docking modules at least were able to reflect that the fighters would be smaller than they are actually displayed. so more should be able to fit in the same space.

Oh sava when i said Freighter i was thinking more of a Repair ship, over something like a clydesdale or somthing like that. 4 repair ships on a carrier is easily enough, which is what i was thinking when i said 1 slot for freighters. since you are also more likley to get 4 people in repair ships than 24 people in fighters, in your carrier at any one time. Tongue

Well as I said before, it would be much easier to just double the slots in which Carriers can have Docking Modules and then half the cargospace DM's need.

So that would be 8 DM slots for Carriers each of which would use 150 Cargospace.

IMO that way one doesn't have to do much coding and balancing.

Repair ship? Didn't think of that ye.
It has a size of a damn middle gunboat, and i don't understand why does it belong to freighter class.

Edit: and Xelon is so right xD

The thing with allowing so many ships from the one docking module is that it pretty much removes the point in having multiple modules. Why use a carrier when you can bring a cloaked liner into a battle and launch 12 snubs? Maybe create that 'large module' for Carriers only that allows a couple of fighters or the one freighter/bomber/SHF while 'small modules' allow a fighter/bomber on a transport as their emergency escort.
The current player numbers in factions these days doesn't really allow for Carriers to be used fully in your idea.

thats what i meant in the first post by classes i think... i wasn't sure at the time because i dont really know how many ships can have a dock module, but.. yea.

Small Dock module, Medium Dock Module, Large Dock module would solve that problem.

Small dock (transports, Cruisers)
2.5 units of space

Medium Dock (Light carriers, Battleships)
5 Units of space

Large Dock (Carriers)
10 Units of space

As for the player count thing, so what? whos to say the numbers will always be the same, just because the player count is low even at maximum theres no point in removing possibilities just for that reason, not allowing the chance for things to happen from the very beginning is just silly.

No one suggested a liner should be able to carry anywhere near twelve snubs, a liner severely lacks in battle compared to a battleship class vessel, and most importantly, keep in mind most factions do not have a dedicated carrier ship. I'm against the idea of restricting the capacity of all battleships just so the few carriers can shine in their discipline. Instead, I think battleships should be able to be used as carriers on a decent scale like they were in singleplayer. Remember the Osiris? I'm pretty sure it carried more than one fighter.

Realistically, the only difference between the carrier's and the liner's capability to field snubs is that the former is designed for the rapid deployment of fighter snubs. And in the midst of a battle, being able to rapidly-deploy and accept escort wings meant the difference between a mobilized fleet, and a sitting, juicy duck. In the case of the latter, it isn't really necessary for ships to come in and out at breakneck-pace.

Thus, I propose that the difference between the carriers' and other ships' ability to launch snubs isn't in the amount of snubs they can carry, but on how quickly they can deploy them. Ships coming out of a Carrier have almost no launch animation: the moment they see space they can engage evasive maneuvers, while any other ship without added special launcher-modules would have the full launch animation.

But I digress...

For the OP, based on current ship scales, there isn't much difference between fighters and freighters, save for that between LF's and Freighters. Basically, you could fit 4 small LF's like the Drake, or two Arrows, or a single Roc/Dromedary in a single bay. If coders had their way, I'd divide ships into the following size classes:

Interceptor: 25% docking bay space
Light Fighter: 30% docking bay space
Heavy Fighter/Shuttle: 50% docking bay space
Super Heavy Fighter/Bomber/Freighter: 100%
