What it takes to bring down a ship - JohnLenin - 06-09-2008

Hi,

I'm at best an average pilot in anything I fly, but from the answers above we can see that from GB/GS and higher 2 skilled bombers can take out everything.

Why? Because the "defenders" limitation comes from the player control:
- the player can track/shoot one attacker at a time, so the other bomber can run havoc

This way the huge caps may loose their sense.

Is there a way maybe to mod them some AI against fighters?

The rule building faction fleets number N BS, 2xN Cruiser, 4xN GB, ... any number of fighters should somehow be also true to counter such units.
If 2 bomber can counter anything they face, ...

But it is not (yet) my bomber :-(

I agree it would be nice to see caps ships worth something.

The only issue is, if we make them more powerful we end up with a lot of oorp people who think that 3 days trading diamonds is qualification enough to fly one of these ships and go around pwning everyone.

The issue for me here is that Caps have the potential to be extremely destructive. That shouldn't be placed in the hands of people who PvP whore.

Simple solution would be to make the Battleships only availible in Guard systems and to up their price to maybe 2 billion.

Capital ships really ought to have all their armour and shielding upped far more so that 2 bombers etc can't rape everything.

Honestly, why would the Sirius houses even build battleships etc if they are so frail?

The reason they have been so heavily nerfed is because people were massively irresponsible with them. See what OORP PvP/cap whores have done to us. SEE!!!

there is no easy answer to the capwhore problem. i'm afraid that anything we do won't do anything to remedy it.

at the moment capships are fairly weak, the mod has been made so that fighter class ships can more easily take down big ships. there always has to be balance so that things don't get out of hand. aside from just a few known balance issues i.e. gunships/gunboat & cruisers being either slightly too powerful or slightly underpowered, everything is fairly balanced.

all that being said i think Igiss has down a great job of balancing things so that in the end, it comes down to player skill. no matter what you fly, if your good enough you can just about take out anything in anything.

dreygon has good point.
it is not only on ship class, but pilot skills and equipment too.

Capital ships can be balanced to bombers etc.
Honestly though, either make battleships etc worth their credits or remove them.
Many mods give up on trying to balance capital ships to bombers etc but it is possible and has been done before, with great benefits to all.

If we remove battleships then sooner or later people will say the same about cruisers, on and on, till we all end up in starfliers then we will have no mod.

Bombers are IMO too powerful. A battleship with large fighter escort is still extremely easy to kill with a few bombers. I do think that cap ships (with the exception of GB's) are underpowered. However there is a very good reason for that which I have outlined above.

That said, I have been flying with a pack of xeno's round NY causing some ruckus, which has been brought to a very abrupt halt by a battlecruiser.

Balence is a tough call, but large ships have been heavily abused in the past, and still are. If we could guarantee that every caps ship owner would roleplay and not just go on sirius wide rampages regarding it as a way to get loads of kills and pwn everyone then I'd be fine with them being pretty uber.
