I don't think people will see your infectee roleplay as legitimate, unless you get a green light from a faction to act as an independent infectee. Becoming an infectee traditionally requires having to ROLEPLAY your character being infected. I've had this issue before, I'm not sure if it's still around.
It's a test and a rite of passage, to see if you are able to handle seriously roleplaying an infectee. I'm sure we're used to those indie nomads running around yelling ~*ooo* DONUTS~ by now, It's kind of a safety measure.

Honestly, you can RP an infectee with most IDs out there, it just depends on what you actually want to do. My infected guy tends to keep his situation a secret for all but the people he trusts most. He prefers indirect approach, gaining people's trust and pretending to be someone he's not, as opposed to shooting everything on sight. For that reason, Freelancer ID has proven to be the best choice for my character and I rolled with it for quite a while before switching to the Wild ID.
On the other hand, if you want your character to be more aggressive, you're going to need a PvP-centric ID.
Some Wild players also tend to complain about their ID being metagamed while using nomad/hybrid equipment, which makes no sense. I use human stuff on my guy while still running a Wild ID and I haven't ran into any major issues so far.

My Wild character has Wilde. tagged ships with Wild ID which are used to fight for and assist Nomads, Wild, Oracles and Commune whenever needed.
He also has got two RFP| tagged ships with Special Operative ID and RFP IFF. You can try to go for an SRP'ed infectee as well, IMO my SRP was worth the effort. Still, it depends on your playstyle.
