Check their website, they're preparing an internal alpha for the end of the year.It seems their project isn't dieing.You can also read a few very interesting Q&A's, mostly about the gameplay they have in mind : and it does look promising.They're basically thinking of everything to make the game awesome.
This is clearly the game I expect the most.It will be a work of art, I'm sure of it.

Yeah, knew about it from a while ago. It's gonna be awesome, I'm sure of that. I'm just not sure if I'll have cash to pay for it.

I have been following this game for the last 3 years or so, I just hope to God this project doesn't die as most like it tend to. But the Developer seems determined so for now I am happy.
EDIT: Anyone think think we should get a Discovery Corporation going on the game when it gets properly up and running?

Space looks nice, but I don't like the ship design. Looks like a space car.
That rock is like the size of a planet in Freelancer.
EDIT: shouldn't have posted until I watched the whole thing. Holy Ff-- seemless space->atmo transitions? I think I'm slightly aroused..

If you read the beginning slate. the cockpit model was inserted to provide proof of concept ( I am hoping too cause that part did look kinda bad). The finished product will rock like the space surroundings
