RE: How to get more activity in Discovery - Binski - 10-21-2019

I'm still advocating a more updated game in general. Not just updates in stats but we need a new set of activities to generate more reasons for people to play and consume. I've suggested a new system to govern wars and house NPC military assets like pieces on a chess board, and players would essentially fight over NPC capital ships that could be moved around the game, at certain distances per move, in what would be a turn based system determining where and when a faction could build/move its battleships, for the pursposes of defending their NPC bases like a house navy defending a civilian base (the idea was that a faction could order an NPC battleship or ships of theirs to a new spot, and by the rules, if you want to lay siege to an NPC base, that faction would need to order at least one of their capital ships (NPC base) to within a certain range of the base being targeted to 'initiate' the siege'.

The ticker was that if the enemy still had their own battleships in that same range (area), they siege can't begin, until the defender ship is disabled (they'd need to siege the defending ship then get their siege, as its presense blocks the attack attempt, and yes if destroyed and more defending ships move up on the next turn/patch, the siege continues but they still can defend). This would mean all NPC capital ships from every faction would have permanent HP, and if destroyed, the faction would need to generate things from the environment to construct a new ship. As far as I believe, this would set it up so that most of the time these battles happen, the battles will be to prevent an NPC base from being sieged by your offending enemy by keeping your space 'covered' by your navy, perhaps being just a move away from mounting a defense. For some bases, you might want to keep a permanent battleship stationed within protection range, like for protecting a shipyard! Which would then have a use in making more ships. I submitted a more detailed proposal on this.

The point is to use the game and its capabilities to its fullest potential. I have admitted plenty to wanting to leave, but no one really ever wants to leave. Those still here need to ask ourselves what are the long term goals for the server now? Now that the Gallic War is over, are there plans for new major story arcs in the future, or is that it? Are plans to let things simmer, or start something new? Well if we are determined to keep the place going, we need something new! Not just new story arc, but new abilities to stimulate situations into developing on their own, giving players a more interactive gameplay and RP, and a fair chance to have effect on the game world. The hope would be that we could come up with new things to do with minimal effort on the part of the devs, by simply using capabilities we already know can be done and aren't too hard. I'm pretty sure its no problem to set any object in the game to have an HP like a POB. (everyone loves POB sieges, just not always losing the POB, but NPC ships can be replaced and lost bases could be counter attacked later). The system I proposed makes NPC battleship/cruiser bases always things to be fought over (attackable), and could be attacked by anyone at any time, so factions would have something to protect, that they can also use for 'offensive' capability, if they actually want to make a 'move' on an enemy faction. The ships become things of value because they can have effect on the environment, and players can play with more purpose!

With any luck, even the announcment that a new system (a ruleset governing the use of NPC assets by factions) of activity that allows for much more player involvement/investment and development could draw back some vets and create something to talk about to potential players. Send out a news letter to everyone on the mailing list and let them know Disco is going more interactive and adding more sandbox features! And about 10 new ships, and 5 new systems Big Grin. No sweat!

Interesting ideas. I recommend you start a thread for your in-game proposals to see how other community members and developers feel.

I've been told the staff are discussing these proposals currently.

If any community members wish to add their opinions to the discussion for the staff to read, please reply now.

Based originally on this idea we sat down and came up with a slightly different forum layout. Let me know if you have comments.

We did discuss the move you are proposing but felt Community Games is used enough to warrant not being merged within any other subforum. We can always monitor it and see if this changes and then find a new home for it. Livestreamer's Lair is also better suited within Community Games due to it focusing on video games whilst Media Center is focused on graphics and editing.

RE: New Forum Layout Feedback - Karlotta - 11-10-2019

It's better than before, but as said about the previous layout here https://discoverygc.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=154382&pid=1935905#pid1935905 , there are still some things that would make it better:

- Make the section titles more visible, if you cant make them larger, make them all caps.
- Remove every word and tab (like number of posts per subsection, useless repetitions of "DiscoveryGC RP 24/7", "Discovery Mod", or formulations like "this is a subforum for...". Basically, remove every single thing that isn't really needed, make things easier to find by reducing the number of words on the page to a minimum.

Yes I personally agree. Forums descriptions were talked about being updated and it is likely to be done in the future but nothing to my knowledge has yet been drafted. If you're happy to give the first draft an attempt and submit it here for further discussion then that would be helpful.

I like it personally.
