RE: The Recovery of Dreams - Leo - 10-31-2024 A small Spatial ship landed in one of the bays of the Gryphon as people rushed around. The rear hatch opened and a lithe woman with auburn hair stepped out. She glanced around the bay with a subtle smile on her face. She noted the man clad in powered armor walking towards her with another man in tow.
"Dr. Emery. Thank you for coming." said the man. She noted the logo emblazed on his chest alongside the SLRC logo. "The Pathfinders, I see Sailas' dream came to fruition." she motioned to the logo. It was very subtle, but the man behind Dante flinched at hearing the name Sailas. She glanced to the man briefly before returning her attention to the man. "Mr. Flintlocke, I take it. Who is your companion?" "This is Pathfinder Liam." It was Roses turn to flinch at the name. "Liam, eh?" she briefly snarled at the name. The Pathfinder behind Dante remained frozen, his hands behind his back. "Nice to meet you both. I didn't come here to stand around and socialize though. Take me to see my Uncle." Dante nodded curtly and turned to lead her to the office. As she walked by Liam, she eyed him suspiciously. He took up the escort from behind and they were off. They walked for a time before she leaned over to Liam. "A bit on the nose with Liam, isn't it?" The man turned his head slowly to look at her as they walked and returned his attention forward without a word. "Figured so. Whatever you're doing here, don't screw this up." The man remained silent as the trio reached the conference room where a myriad of individuals were pouring over plans. "Dr. Wright, sir. I have brought a surprise guest who has offered to help with our retrieval." Rose took one last look at Liam, who did not move a muscle, and entered the room. "Surprise Uncle Brad! I changed my mind...you weren't seriously going in there without me, were you?" she said with a smile. RE: The Recovery of Dreams - Stoner_Steve - 11-01-2024 Brad's eyes widened in surprise as Rose entered the room. A mix of emotions flashed across his face - relief, joy, and a hint of skepticism. "Rose," he exclaimed, his voice filled with astonishment. "What are you doing here?" He turned to the assembled team. "Everyone, this is Dr. Rose Emery..." A murmur rippled through the crowd as they recognized the name. Some were skeptical, others were intrigued. But all were curious about the sudden appearance of this enigmatic figure. "Now, Rose," Brad continued, gesturing to the various plans and tablets spread across the table, "as you can see, we've been hard at work. But every pair of eyes is welcome. If you see anything that needs adjusting, now's the time to speak up." RE: The Recovery of Dreams - Emily Gataki - 11-04-2024 It was two days after the announcement, the day of the meeting, and she was not going to be there on time.
“I bet Mister Efficient would find something to complain about. Damnit I’m late already…”
Emily sat herself up and glanced over the datapads one last time before picking them up. Key personnel. The people who needed to know would be there anyway. She felt an unusual tingle down her spine as she made her way to the door. A tingle that she attempted to shrug off. Something big was happening.
She left her quarters and made her way through the corridors towards the meeting room. Even walking briskly, it wasn’t enough. It had already started, and the door was closed. She knocked, wondering how to explain herself. Datapads handed over first, there were recent edit logs anyway, and that final “once over” would help. She opens the door, slips in and closes it quietly, slinking over to the side. ”Sorry I’m late, Here’s the fuel and maintenance reports you asked for. We gotta somehow find a fifth of our fleets fuel consumption along the way, or lighten our load.”
Emily placed the reports in front of Brad, then made her way over to the corner of the room where she could see all of the people present. She recognised some faces, others she didn’t. Her arms folded across her chest, hoping she hadn’t missed anything important. RE: The Recovery of Dreams - Stoner_Steve - 11-04-2024 Brad picked up the datapads Emily had just placed on the table. A smirk crept across his face as he glanced at the title. "Well, well, well. Looks like someone's been hard at work. Brad turned to Rose who was seated near him. "Since you missed the fun of the initial planning, why don't you take these and see if you can find us some fuel efficiency, You know, turn lead into gold, that kind of thing." Someone in the back, sounding suspiciously like Sean called out ""Maybe a little dark matter infusion, a pinch of hyperspace dust..." RE: The Recovery of Dreams - Crowley - 11-14-2024 "Liam" stood silently as the Starlight team reviewed the data presented to them for their upcoming mission. He smiled behind the anonymity that the helmet provided. This was the kind of thing he missed. He was tempted to remove the helmet and scream surprise much like his wayward daughter had done moments before but he fought the urge to do so. This was their moment.
He was only here to ensure that they recovered the ship and that all data related to his research was either preserved or erased to prevent it from falling into other hands. He wasn't clear how long the influence of his mysterious benefactor/manipulator had hung over him and how much of his designs were influenced by whatever it was. He wasn't about to see his friends and comrades become influenced by that same force. He wasn't about to see Starlight, his creation, become a tool to be wielded by it. Brad had grown into the position of Director. Clearly he was meant for leadership. If "Liam" had to reveal himself, would he offer the Directorship back? Or would he punch him out? Probably the latter. He watched as the man he had considered a brother work with the various teams to dictate the plan moving forward as the entered Earhart. He smiled again despite himself, he was proud of his friend for what he had achieved in a short time. His daughter, Rose, knew that he was standing here yet she did her best to ignore him either to not give him away or because she hated him. Again, no doubt the latter. He had thought she was dead and he had wept when he discovered that she yet lived . He blamed himself for running away instead of doing all he could to save her from the experience she had endured in Alberta and Earhart. Though, he noted the change in her. No longer was she the ignorant starry eyed child who he had once called his Starlight. Now, she was a force to be reckoned with. A brilliant mind with a penchant for combat to boot. She had become him, something he had wanted to shield her from...though children often took after their parents, if you wanted them to or not. Leo had finally got his doctorate. "Liam" nodded subtly only briefly gaining the attention of Dante next to him. Leo had long since been a brilliant mind within SLRC and he was pleased that he had come back at Brad's request. He was an intelligent man who understood the nuances between engineering and science. It was good he was here. Then there was Dante, the ever present enigma. "Liam" had recruited him before his departure with the express note that he reported only to him. While he would report to Brad as well, the lions share of the information gleaned was given to "Liam" instead. This was due to his prior influence but now it was a case of protection. He snorted, Raven had been right. Be careful the information you give out to others, the deep dark is dangerous. He hated himself for agreeing with the Technocrat, but she had been right after all. There were various other faces in the meeting that he did not recognize. No doubt Brad had recruited more brilliant minds in the intervening years. Good, they would need it for the trials ahead. "Liam" continued to be a statue, standing next to Dante. At one point during the conversation, Brad had mentioned Sailas in his musings, leading Rose to look his way with a shadow across her face. No doubt she would never forgive him, nor would any of the others if it came to light of his involvement in this operation. He just had to hope if it came to that, they would understand the reason for his disappearance...eventually, anyway. RE: The Recovery of Dreams - Starlight Research Consortium - 11-24-2024 The day had come. The fleet of scientists and explorers were lead a short distance away from the large anomaly and Ikarus Station that orbited it.
At the head was the newly purchased Odysseus, a used Civilian Carrier that was retooled for this very journey. However, in the haste to bring it along, it lacked any defensive or offensive capability. It's tasking was to jump and deposit the ships brought along and then plot a trip to the Omicrons where the ship would monitor the ongoing irregularities in the Omicrons and Omegas. Along side the Bustard flew the Darkhorse, the lead ship of the Pathfinders and defender of the SLRC fleet on their journey into the unknown. The drives aboard the large ships powered on, drawing almost incalculable amounts of power from their systems. The Ingenuus Cores that were authorized for use balanced the draw of power to ensure a stable and safe rift into the mysterious enigma that was Earhart. As space was torn asunder, the two massive ships disappeared through the rifts into the maw of the beast. The recovery of the Dreamscape would be paid for dearly. Whether that be in ingenuity...or blood. RE: The Recovery of Dreams - Leo - 11-30-2024 Rose had spent three years in Alberta. If not for the Dreamscape, she surely would have died there. It had become her home and for the first two years, things had fallen into a steady routine. Wake up and go for a jog through the various decks that were still whole. Take a shower and ensure that the water filtration system was working so that she didn't bathe in dirty water. Go to hydroponics and get a snack from the ever dwindling garden. Review all the systems onboard the ship that kept her alive. Search for solutions to escape. Go to sleep.
It wasn't until year three that things began going down hill. The water filtration systems began slowly failing, the refineries which converted the native radiation in the system into energy began to degrade. One by one the systems began to fail and she started losing body mass. By the time the carrier had inexplicably jumped into Earhart, Rose had lost 30% or more of her body mass. With what little energy she had left, she escaped out of Earhart and back to Sirius proper. She hadn't remembered much of her escape but...being back here in this strange place, the memories came flooding back. It almost seemed like the window in front of her disappeared and she could fall out into the mysterious place, body and all. "Weird place, isn't it?" said a voice near her. The sudden noise startled her. When she looked to her left, she saw Dr. Morningstar standing there, looking out the window beside her. "Each time I come here, I find myself even more perplexed. One hypothesis is that this place is inside a hyperspatial bubble. Those things that looks like cyclones just a bit away are proposed to be some kind of edge of this space." he motioned to the strange vortex like clouds in the distance. "Is only a theory, of course." Rose had never met Dr. Morningstar but she had heard of him in passing. He was more handsome than described and found herself being rather self-concious in that moment. What the hell was that about? "Uhh, yeah. Right." she responded. "Nice one, Rose. Way to sound like an idiot." she chastised herself. To his credit, he just smiled her way. "Well, I better get going and make sure that the Pathfinders don't break anything." he nodded politely as a sign of good-bye and headed down the hallway. She watched him go briefly before glancing back outside. "I've got a bad feeling about this whole thing..." she said out loud to herself as she hurriedly walked towards the bridge. RE: The Recovery of Dreams - Emily Gataki - 11-30-2024 Emily sighed. The intercom buzzed for all bar essential personnel to remain in their quarters until jump sequence had been reported successful. Each moment felt like eternity as she laid on her bed. Although she had the luxury of a windowed room, there wasn’t much to see for the moment. Instead, she lay there, twirling a few strands of her hair and staring at the ceiling of the room.
“Rift Stabilised” was the resounding echo throughout the internal comms. She had hear rumours of this prototype, experimental, semi-unreliable technology existing, but this was her first time hearing or seeing proof. A glance out the window yielded pockets of empty space littered with clusters of asteroids and a soft highlight along the window frame from the nearby Baxter anomaly. Surely it was a little dangerous to initiate such experimental tech so close to something so anomalous? “Well, you never learn from not trying something new.”
As the vessel transitioned through to ‘Earhart’, along the freshly formed rift connection, the space outside shifted and blurred together. Objects became smudges and distant specs before fizzling out into the emptiness behind, while the hazy hue ahead became more prominent. Not unlike travelling through a Jump Hole through Sirius. This one, however, felt more… turbulent. There seemed to be instability through the artificial connection to deeper space.
She sat up, almost in time to the immense feeling of slowing to a stop. The dizzying sensation of weightlessness gripped Emily, the urge to throw up rapidly rising as the experience held firm. She managed to hold herself, though the dizziness remained somewhat. A moment to steady herself before she looked up and out the window. “I’ve… never seen anything like this….”
They were here. Wherever ‘here’ was in space-time, she didn’t know. She only knew that what she was looking at, had not been seen by many before. The window wasn’t sating her gaze. She wanted to see more. One solitary thought breached her awestruck mind: The observation deck. That would be the best place to see. It took her several moments to process, but once she had, she picked up her personal datapad and made her way out towards the upper levels. RE: The Recovery of Dreams - Stoner_Steve - 12-02-2024 Brad stood on the bridge of the Gryphon, a mix of excitement and apprehension swirling within him. The Odysseus, their new vessel, hummed with anticipation, ready to embark on its perilous journey into the unknown. "Alright, Sean," Brad said, turning to his friend, "you and the Gryphon hold down the fort here. Keep an eye on the rift, and make sure our rear is covered." Sean nodded, a serious expression on his face. "You got it, Brad. Just remember, we're counting on you to bring that ship back in one piece. And don't forget to keep an eye on Rose." Brad chuckled. "I'll do my best. And you, keep an eye on the techs. Make sure they don't overload the Ingenuus cores." With a final nod, Brad turned and headed for the shuttle bay. The Odysseus awaited, a beacon of hope in the vast expanse of space. As he boarded the shuttle, he couldn't shake the feeling that this mission was just the beginning of a much larger adventure. "Here's to the Odysseus," he muttered, raising a glass of synthetic ale. "May she carry us safely to the stars and back." RE: The Recovery of Dreams - Stoner_Steve - 12-26-2024 Earhart D: Plus 15 minutes
Bridge - Gryphon The bridge of the Gryphon shuddered as the Odysseus and the rest of the fleet surged ahead, their engines roaring like a chorus of angry beasts. Sean watched them disappear into the swirling chaos of the Earhart system, a knot of anxiety tightening in his stomach. Then, it began. The pylons in the system core erupted in a symphony of colors, a terrifying spectacle of alien technology. "Discharge imminent!" a technician shrieked, his voice barely audible above the growing hum of the Gryphon's systems. Sean braced himself. He knew what was coming. The pylons, according to the intel, would prioritize the larger target – the Gryphon...would be collateral damage, a necessary sacrifice to shield the rest of the expedition. Hours ago, they had sealed off non-essential sections of the ship, purging the air to minimize casualties. Now, the Gryphon shuddered under the onslaught, a living testament to the sheer scale of the pylon's firepower. Shields flickered, threatening to collapse under the relentless barrage. Sean frantically juggled power allocation, desperately trying to maintain a stable jump corridor, reinforce the shields, and keep life support online. Sweat beaded on his brow, each passing second an eternity. "We've only got enough reserve power to dance in this fight for only so long," he muttered, his voice grim. "Send the burst to Brad. They might be on their own if they don't speed their recovery efforts." |
