English..? Please? - Cellulanus - 06-14-2009

I've personally only interacted with non-english players a couple of times, both didn't end to well.

One time I encountered a Liberty VHF entering Rheinland on my RM, he completely ignored my hails and CDs, so a torp up his tailpipe took him out, where he came back and engaged me, then when I killed him again one of his friends came after me. (Lucky there was a non lolcap cruiser nearby)

The other time there were these two traders running the Rheinland Liberty embargo, after what must of been an hour of me yelling "No go to Liberty, go back" and them responding in something I haven't got a clue what it was they went on and I ended up destroying them both.

But yeah, players who can't speak English can't properly roleplay, I don't go and play on a German server because I know I wouldn't contribute anything to their community and I'd just be a nuisance, I expect the same respect on this English server.

I completely agree, I mean isnt it completely obvious from the outset, for a new player looking at the Disco homepage, the forum etc, that this is an English speaking server?

I commend the people who make a serious attempt to RP with a language that is not their own and welcome them wholeheartedly.

To those who do not and simply ignore other players and the conventions of the server, I say please leave.

Ok where to start....ummm oh yeah....WOW

That is the most biased, Ignorant, arrogant thing i have ever heard said on this forum and i hope i never see something like that again.

English has become a mainstream language in this day and age, and UNFORTUNATELY THE MISCONCEPTION is that those who do not speak fluent english, are not intelligent....

Unfortunately, USA is lacking in many things, especially education....

example:
When i was younger my parents hosted 2 foreign exchange students, they still visit to this day.....

1 was from japan, fluently spoke 10 dialects of chinese, japanese, korean, spanish, and french....also she could understand perfect english, written and oral, HOWEVER she had an accent and this caused the ever seen foreigner=DUMB stereotype.

in most countries at least 3 languages are REQUIRED during what we americans would consider the 6-12 levels....

the ability to speak proper english syntax has nothing to do with ones LIMITLESS IMAGINATION

SO out of pure Curiousity....how many languages can you fluently speak/understand?

There is absolutely nothing arrogant or ignorant about demanding that people follow server rules. German servers, Russian servers, French servers, they all have the same kind of rule. "Speak our language to play here."

It's the same when you go to live in another country. You are expected to learn the language of that country.

I think what he meant by saying that if they don't speak English they cant properly RP, wasn't that they are less intelligent, but rather that due to a lack of understanding their RP is limited. And that is very true. I speak Spanish to an extent but I know that if I tried to RP in nothing but Spanish, I would not be able to properly RP. Not because I'm less intelligent, but because I can't speak Spanish well enough.

CALM DOWN!! I'm pretty sure what Johann meant was those who cannot speak english (barely, if at all) on THIS server, therefore cannot roleplay well on THIS server. If you had read his post in its entirety you would have realised so. To me that is a completely valid point and is simple common sense.

By the same token I'm sure that if they were to go and play on a server based upon their own respective native languages they would do perfectly fine.

Wow,....... I would say more but that would be to flamebait.

Anywho, I say rather than fight about whether or not people are ignorant, or which nation has a decent education system where many people seek a secondary education, I say we look into a way that helps speakers of foreign languages who do wish to participate in Disco.

The idea was thrown out that we translate the rules, I would say that is fine, but not in-game. I'd say what we could do is place a statement translated into Spanish, German, Russian and maybe French and Chinese(not sure we get any) on the in-game rule card that everyone gets in the beginning that states,

"This is an English Role-Playing server. Please try to communicate in English, and see discoverygc.com/forums for server rules in your language, and Welcome."

This is a respectful statement, it informs the players that we wish them to try to speak English, it guides them to where they need to go for server rules, and it does not limit them in their enjoyment of the game. In the forum translation of the server rules we could also provide alternative servers where they might have an easier time communicating, and also explain that they will be pirated in english most likely. Also they may need a dossier on the current RP flow such as the RM/LN Embargo and such, to avoid problems that 'Johann Brunhild', described.

I play here from some time, I know my English is not good, I learned it long time ago and now I am too lazy to do it again. I am trying to RP with you, but sometimes it is very difficult, because of lack of my language knowledge, so the quality of my RP is not good. I would like to say that this topic - speak fluently English or go away- is not so nice, but I understand your frustration, when you can't communicate with others, because of they don't want / can't answer.

I would say, most of players who come here, they understand English on the basic level. Since we defeated communism -it was 20 years ago- children in my country learn English in the basic school, so no any young guy can say 'I don't speak English'. But some of them simply don't want RP and this lack of language is only a way to avoid RP. I am sure about that, because I met my countryman who tried to act this way. In the end after we cleared conventions in PM, he showed he can talk. Of course older guy like me, who learned in school only Russian, may have problem with English.

There is also other side of this problem. Some people talks in the way that is completely understandable. So I could now say that they break the rule - "All messages in chat must be in understandable English....".
I know that people try to increase the quality of their RP using accent simulation, slang etc., and it is fun for you who are native English speakers, but completely odd for me. I can not communicate with person who talks this way, there is not a dictionary or translator that can help.

The Freelancer community is shrinking all the time, there are many servers but all are almost empty. Why people from all the World come here? They want to play with others. It doesn't make sense to host specific language servers and to play with 5 people. So, even if some people don't present good RP because of their lack of language knowledge, they fill your server and they make freelancer longer life.

Try to be more patient and indulgent. Many times I see that if you will meet not well English speaking guy, you decrease the quality of your own RP to '10 seconds, pay or die' even if this guy wants to say something more, you don't want it, because it is boring for you.

From the RP point, who said the whole Sirius population speaks the same language. There is 800 years after they left Earth, even if they spoke same English, they are spread on many systems, and the local languages were developing all the time. There can be some problems with communication between different groups of people. I am curious if after next 800 years American will talk easy with British.

I hope you understand what I mean, if not, then try to imagine what I wanted to say, I do it all the time here on the forum and on the server. There is no other way, you have to tolerate me, since I won't go away and it doesn't matter how many 'English, please.." topics you will write.

Thanks.

' Wrote:You, who have English as a native language, d'you know how -hard- it is to learn a foreign language?

You can't expect us all to have a decent ability about speaking in English.

And banning a player for beign a foreign does look rude.

I have to agree with that...

If there are native English speakers here, who wish that we foreigners speak better English, then make a thread, where they point out the most common mistakes in grammar, and such...

English..? Please? - schlurbi - 06-14-2009

Finally someone starts to talk about that. I meet a lot of people who cant speak a little bit of English. And it is really starting to annoy me. It happens while pirating, it happens when they take Wildlife and they are not allowed to or when i see they are breaking any rules and i try to help them. I was explaining someone in simple Role Play that he is a known Smuggler in Bretonia now. And he should stay away from our Stations. And i only get "No Enlgish".

I had people laughing about me because i talked english to russians. Yes, they were laughing about me, the one trying to communicate with them.

You cant tell them that it is a rule that you have to be able to talk english, because they mostly dont even understand that. That really happened to me. They are not even able to read their IDs, or the rules which are shown in the Chat.

It is a Role Play Server. And everyone needs to be able to talk english. I am not racist or something. English is not my native language. I learned it, same as a lot of other people.

Someone here posted that i should try to learn their language to communicate. Why should i? They are on a Server where you HAVE to talk english. And i should learn their language because they cant speak ours? No way.

Why not just setting up a Russian Discovery Server? And every Russian who cant speak english can go on this one? Because the most of the non-english speakers are russian. (Not being Racist, but it is true)

I have to say, that is true... There are some really annoying people, which don't know that they can't dock, undock and engage you again, all while being engaged. And let's say that they fly Battleships. That makes them annoying, and there should be made something about them.

But it is wrong to ban someone who actually tries to talk English and RP, while he may be not doing it so good...

And again, as I said, make a thread where English native speakers point out the most common mistakes in grammar...
