Notice: Rule loophole: Bombers - DeathsOverture - 06-28-2009

Thanks for the notice, I have a habit of sitting still while typing my roleplay.

It's disgusting what the people who come over here from Diablo 2 and Unreal Tournament will do for the blue kill message. Aren't we a community? Let's act like one.

GAH i resent that...i play Diablo 2, and Combat arms, and you dont see me flying around all willy nilly blowing people up....

Yeah, whenever i pirate, i end up getting the occasional person shooting at me without notice while i'm still typing... thank god for that escape key!

Another option is to hold your afterburney key, turn on mouse flight, set the cursor into a corner so you continualy loop, press enter WITHOUT letting go of your afterburner key, let go of thrust, and type, you'll be looping around the enemy at 200 m/s, should help atleast a bit if you want to roleplay while getting shot at, it's what i do.

Not everyone from Diablo 2 is a loler. I guess it was a bit of a stereotype.

If you play in "pubs" (public duel games), apparently everyone is a "nub sorc" or has a "char > ur acct." There are no manners and no moderation. When I hear of these people who exploit the rules for a kill message, I think of that game, I can't help it.

If an LNS does this to you, we'll cut his throat. 'Nuff said.

Bleh, type kills.

I've also had people try talk to me while I'm running away and out of their weapon range. They do it so that you'll fly in a straight line, then fire their SNACs at you while you're typing. Had it happen to me once, soon as I started typing three SNACs came flying at me. Only one hit , though.

It's also not just noobs that do it. I have encountered several of Discovery's public personalities that have bottled and often quite long engagement notices that they fire off within milliseconds of firing the killing shot (which in many cases is milliseconds behind the shield-killing shot) if not later.

I do not report rule violations since I feel that disciplinary action is often too severe and always too public, but people that behave this way tend to be those that follow the rules to the letter rather than the spirit. The way I see it, these people -- not those that are oblivious of or apathetic to the rules -- produce the brunt of harmful behaviour on the server. This is an example of one of the reasons I feel stricter rules will do little to improve the server and may very well harm it.

The rules state you may not engage without notice, right? Well they are. But you have No way to actually prove that.

Why?

Easy. You jump out of the lane and see a pirate in a roc bomber. You begin to rp how he should leave before you bash his pretty little face in, while you type you loose your shields.

...

Sindroms ... from what I read of your post here ... YOU gave the engagement notice. You made the challenge by stating THEY gotta leave. They were responding to your threat.

Had you said nothing before they opened fire you'd be correct. But way too many times I've encountered lawfuls who've given me an ultimatum followed by a 10 second pause and then followed up by a barrage of gunfire, missiles and CD's.

If I'm sitting there minding my own business on my pirate vessel and you show up with threatening talk ... you've already initiated hostilities (verbally). If I choose to depart in peace, are you going to let me depart? Too often I don't get the opportunity to leave in peace. I usually get the "we can't allow you to leave alive" ... where's the RP in that? If the lawfuls would actually give us the opportunity to leave (sometimes I get a decent chap to let me go) then you wouldn't have trigger happy bad guys. But you lawfuls gotta be willing to let the unlawful go when he's voluntarily gonna go.

Perhaps you missed "while you type" part, as you have to type in your message to communicate and RP without 3rd party software.

The best way I found to avoid these engagement exploiters is to watch the chat window all the time and monitor if any of them enter the system you are in, or are in the system you are about to enter. If yes I will just dock and log, a bit paranoid I know, but at least you are denying them their "fun"

About "type killers" I keep it to be a spineless action, just to wait for the moment when your opponent decides to answer to win a fight.

hmpf,,, perhaps it is time to utilise those preset message slots for some witty and insulting answers hahh!
