What about, changing it a little.
An example, is you were an inhabitant on the Hispania, when it was damaged your pod malfunctioned and did not open when all the others did. In their haste to escape, the corsairs/outcasts left you behind. Now.. X years later, a freelancer finds your pod, still active, fixes it and releases you.
To you much time has passed, technology has progressed far past anything you remember. (Remember you only know about tech from starlancer times)

As to the fail comment, it's a common and good natured comment on another board I frequent. It evidently doesn't translate here.
