Why do so many people bother with the discovery scanner ? - Harcourt.Fenton.Mudd - 12-31-2009

I've got one mounted on a battlecruiser, however that ship is RPd as a science/exploration ship, so I view it thru RP as an extended sensor array for such a vessel.

Well thats an idea isnt it?

Extended sensor array that takes up cargo space.

I know I still have some Discovery Scanners mounted because they were easier to buy along the then-current routes of those characters in 4.84.

Ok -can someone explain something else about the scanner stats here too while you are at it? It says the Discovery Scanner can see out to 10k, and cargo scan at 2500m (2.5 k right?) So why do I always find myself having to be less than 1000m from ships to be able to get scan data? Is this an error in the stat card on the scanner?

It's just not reccomended, as it's expensive.

Sorry for asking again, but that anything means i can mount it in a fighter??
PS: just for info.

Increased scan range on the navmap, and also, it's the best scanner for finding objects in nebulae with sensor-reducing effects. There are nebulae with sensor reductions high enough to lower the sight distance of other ships and of objects in space below 15k, while the Discovery scanner will pick them up at full distance regardless.

What she said.

And whoever said it above brought up a good point, sensors with extended range that take up cargo space would be pretty freaking cool.

Imagine a 5k cargo sensor array that can see players 100k away.

Imagine using that as a RP tool....

As a captain of the Order Recon Cruiser... there should be some sort of scaleable option for lock-on range or something. Why should my ship -- made for reconnaissance and tracking -- have the same capabilities as a starflea that stopped at Bethlehem station on the way out of Penny?

As a pilot of a trader escort, Discovery scanner is useful for scouting ahead / holding up the rear of a convoy.

As anything else, it's just nice to have a bead on who is around you for as long as possible... but for RP reasons I won't use Discovery scanners for non Order Recon Cruiser / designated scouts.
