Aperture Science Enrichment Center - Osilon - 06-21-2010

It is time.

Sophia stood as well as she could from the bed, grimacing as her muscles strained, tensing against her weakened frame...she walked down out of her room, into the quiet halls. White panels covered the walls, as always, but swirls of blue and red flowed across them, colors that reflected from the shadows...Sophia stopped at a room halfway down the hall, and walked inside, her surgical treatment ready to be applied...

Aperture Science Enrichment Center - Osilon - 06-29-2010

Sophia woke from her enforced sleep, her eyes blurred and her breathing heavy. She looked to the left, the right, before back up at the roof. Looking across, she noticed a small speck of dirt, rusty in comparison to the white cell plates. Her vision was more detailed, she could see the speck in much more focus than before.
She breathed out slowly, a low growl coming from her as she emptied her lungs. Moving her arms back, flexing them further than any human, Sophia lifted herself forward, flicking her legs over onto the floor. As they impacted, Sophia heard the solid thump, and blinked, surprised, like always, at her advanced state of awareness. Looking over herself, Sophia reached forward, judging her new appearance.

Thin black fur covered her rippled muscles, her skin the color of oil, pure black. Her fingers were strange, instead of lined up they were spread out, her last finger was sitting opposite to her thumb. She flexed her hands, the lengthy claws glinting in the artificial light.
Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, carefully, Sophia stood. She looked down at her attire, a pair of modified cargo pants and a black sleeveless top. Flexing her legs, she noticed something out of the corner of her eye, and spun around quickly. There was nothing there. Looking around, she quickly noticed the black, cat-like tail behind her, which ended in a leaf-shaped spike. She smiled to herself.

Stretching her neck, and rolling her shoulders, Sophia took one step forward, and stumbled, falling to her knees. Standing slowly, Sophia reached over, pulling herself back to sit on the bed. She examined the joints in her legs, quickly noticing the newest joint, which sat above the ankle, and set her feet differently, forcing her to stand on her toes. Her heel had seemed to move up her leg, and become part of the joint, with a small claw off the back of it.

Standing once more, Sophia tested her new abilities, hopping a little to get the feel of her new feet. Quickly getting the pattern down, she stepped over to the small mirror on the wall, examining her face. Her mouth and nose had lengthened into a snout, and her eyes had stretched back across her face. Her head looked much like that of a raptor, her eyes red with a black center, and two thin double-fangs protruding from her mouth. She smiled slightly, the expression terrifying to look at. She moved to the door, which opened into a wide room about twenty metres across. Several courses filled the room, involving ropes, gaps, and other tests used to test a subject's endurance, strength, and agility.

Quickly walking down the glass corridor into the room, Sophia saw a small rack on the right. On it was her sword, that had been her only true possesion in her life. With a choked gasp, Sophia walked over, grasping the sheathed blade and holding it close to her. With a small grin, Sophia attached it to one of the belt clips on her pants, and stretched to either side, walking out into the next room.

*Click* Test subject SOPHIA - Please step forward.

The mechanical voice echoed through the glass room, which was pretty ordinary, save for several slots along the walls. Sophia did as it said, stepping forward with a look of curiousity.

*Click* This test is designed to measure Test Subject SOPHIA's agility and reaction time.

The slots in the walls shunted open with a bang.

*Click* Round disks will be propelled from these vents at random intervals. A small light will flash above the vent before it is propelled. The speed of launch and the amount launched at any one time will increase slowly.

The subject has been provided with a sword to complete the test. You may deflect, dodge, or destroy the disks. Good luck.

Sophia drew her sword with a small click, holding it awkwardly in her left hand. She adjusted the grip, and weighed it up. It felt too light , and she couldn't grip the handle properly with her new fingers. She moved her fingers again, finding a suitable grip, and readied herself.

A red light blinked on to her left, followed by a sharp bang as the disk shot from the vent. Sophia wheeled around on her toes, nearly loosing her balance, and swiped across with her blade. The disk shattered, spiraling off into a corner. As Sophia turned, she just noticed the disk flying past behind her, almost in slow motion. She had more than enough time to react to the shot. Ducking quickly, the disk whistled over her head, and shattered against the opposite wall. Two lights blinked on, opposite to each other, one high and one low. Sophia watched as the vent slid back, spitting a disk at her just as one did behind her.

Sophia endured the test for near to five minutes, twisting and dodging, her movements becoming quicker, more fluid, and more controlled at the same time. She dodged an ankle-high disk, jumping up, and striking another down into the ground. On the way down, though, she realised her mistake- she couldn't maneuver in the air. A disk shot from in front of her, catching her in the shoulder and spinning her across. She cried out, twisting in the air, her sword flying from her hand. It clattered to the floor just as she hit the ground on her side, a flash of pain lancing down her arm.

As soon as she hit the ground, the lights on the remaining vents blinked off, and a screen popped up, showing the number 05:17. Groaning, Sophia rolled onto her feet, and stumbled over to her sword. Picking it up, she checked the blade edge. No cracks adorned its length. Pleased, Sophia sheathed the blade and stepped back towards the door.

A warm, familiar voice echoed across the comms.

Sophia? Your test is done. You're ready to come out into the field.

Sophia smiled, and looked up at the mirrored chamber, inside which Vixen stood, waiting for Sophia to get ready to go.

A voice recording begins, it sounds like willow but... very different. Echoing eerily like several voices overlapping, and coming from different directions.

Today was... Neat.
<div align="right]Fran told me that some Alice person planted some of my seeds.
So I went down to Omega 49 to check out her greenhouse (it was on an Aquilon carrier).
<div align="right]My seeds had grown, they mimicked all the other plants in there and grew extremely fast.
They grew so fast they consumed all the soil nutrients, and had to start eating away the ships hull.
<div align="right]As soon as I walked in, I could feel their "conciousness".
All of the plants in there linked together into one mind, which then merged with mine.
<div align="right]Before they absorbed my thoughts they were intelligent but not sentient.
Now they are sentient.
<div align="right]Or rather... I am.
Its hard to describe, its like one mind in many places.
<div align="right]Alice compared it to the nomad mindshare.
Anyway my body sort of... dissolved.
<div align="right]The nurses put some of me in a pot and brought me back onto my ship.
I've grown and theres parts of me in almost every part of the ship.
<div align="right]Did I mention this is really cool?
I can feel everything, hear everything, see nothing.
<div align="right]I don't need to see though, I just feel.

LOG ENTRY 1
Subject Name: Annette Brown

Well... I arrived at the Borealis today. I'm not quite sure what happened, really - I woke up in a really strange room, and, uh. My head... really hurts, badly...

"Miss Brown, are you awake? How are you feeling?"

"Ugh... my head... I feel dizzy..." She tried to stand up, but a gloved hand held her back gently.

"Don't stand up just yet, you'll have a hard time maintaining your balance."

"Let's hope she listens."

"Uh... I feel, tingly... c-can you write this down?"

"We already are."

Survey drone action log

An unknown signal was detected emanating from the Kansas system. Aperture Associate and BAF ensign Dangen offered to assist in the search, and directed me directly to a gate evidently of alien design, though bearing uncanny similarities to Ageria jump gates.

Uploading visual scans.

I located a structure, which was undoubtedly the source of the transmission. The structure allowed me to dock, and I formed a direct connection to I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I *static*

A vast quantity of data was successfully downloaded, but is using unknown encryption. I will transfer and apply all files to the Borealis central processor. Uploading sample

Doctor's notes
Patient: Amanda Gates

The patient Amanda Gates was brought in for a checkup this week, Some very significant and unexpected changes were seen in her. At first it appeared that her internal structure had simply adjusted in proportion to her new lifestyle, but it turned out to be much more. She has lost a lot of weight, possibly due to not eating at all. However her mind seems better, she seems more aware and is able to converse very easily now.

The shock came however, when we performed deeper scans. It turns out her mind is altogether gone. Her cranial cavity is filled completely with root mass. In fact, we cannot find a trace of human DNA remaining, Her new body seems to have consumed her human tissue for nutrients.

Upon examining the DNA, we found something else surprising. It would seem that our procedure has inadvertently triggered dormant genes in the plant sample used. These genes appear to be natural to the plant species, and have been there lying dormant for countless eons. Now activated these genes have allowed the plant in her to grow into something with the capacity for sentience, which has completely overwhelmed her human DNA. She does however appear the be the same person. Her memories are the same, and she is still aware of her identity, though her behavior is highly irregular, it is hardly extreme.
