Dusty Lens had it correct first. It's definitely Kyushu Rice if a staple has to be named. Similarly, there was a lot of seafood on Honshu for a while there.

i d rather like luxory seafood - a commodity that d decay quickly but pay well. - or if we re politically incorrect ... we could also make it whale meat
