The CDs should go.. The US Navy doesn't use battleships to stop smugglers.. They use the coastguard which has helicopters and fast boats..

So cruisers/BCs/BSs, yes. Take the CDs off, as its completely unrealistic, and no captain in his right mind would choose to waste countless credits on fueling his BS and weaponry to shoot a single fighter.. Also, many of you voting don't have to deal with this; But do you know how many BHG destroyers, battlecruisers, and battleships there are that are trader's secondary chars that they use for revenge killing? And those with the BHG capships that just fly around looking for easy kills? Its rediculous. The BHG couldn't mint enough of those capships in 50 years to justify the amount we have on this server..

I vote no...Capital ships are just that..Big,bad,weapons of destruction.To see a Battleship just owned by 2 bombers and a fighter just makes me sick.If anything the 2 bombers and fighter should see the Battleship and run away screaming like little girls.A squadron of bombers with fighter escorts should be whats needed to take out a Battleship.2 bombers and a fighter should be able to take down a Gunboat,and maybe a Destroyer.A Cruiser IF they are lucky,a Battlecruiser IF they are lucky AND the BC Captain is having a VERY bad day.Otherwise...beef-up the capships and make them, what they are supposed to be..Warships.......NOT LST's..(long slow targets).Better weaponry for dealing with other Cap ships,better shields,powerplants,way more armor,better turrets for anti fighter/bomber.
Heck..look at the ship specs for Iowa class Battleship in WW2...16" gun turrets,8" gun turrets,5" gun turrets,40mm bofers turrets,50 cal.guns,and 30 cal. guns. Now....you wanna mess with that with your 2 bombers and 1 fighter? I didn't think so.And on another point....since everybody else has pointed out similarities between RL and freelancer,NO trader of ANY size should be able to outrun a warship of any size.Period.Warships are made for fighting,either defending or attacking,and they need to get to the battle ASAP.Transports are made for moving cargo in a respectable time,not outrunning every Cap ship they come across.
Also..the range of capship weapons.....please,gimme a break.GET SOME RANGE on the turrets.This is space combat,not old Earth sailing ship days......getting in close and going broadsides IS a strategy,but its not supposed to be the rule of thumb.In my opinion,level 10 Battleship turrets should have a range of between 4k to 5.5k,depending on the type of turret,damage,power useage,etc....
And that is MY 2 cents worth..and by the way....I have gamed capships for OVER 25 YEARS,so i do know a few things,but not everything.Does ANYBODY remember Traveller?(hint..if your under 30,odds are you have no clue).

hmmm, wrong title methinks.

I totally agree that caps need more armor and a powerplant boost (and this from a guy who flys a bomber most of the time).

But I don't think that caps need the CD slot. This way, if a BH BC is going after my bomber he HAS to bring along a gunboat or less to make sure I stay put. It encourages team co-operation.

Also, if your cap is going to be fighting other caps you should bring along a bomber or 2 anyway. More MULTIPLAYER co-operation.

This idea was spawned because my bomber was chased around S13 by a Rheinland Cruiser (:angry:) for 15 minutes this morning. Cruisers/Battleships aren't made to hunt down a fighter or bomber or even a smuggler. They are made for WARFARE and with huge fleet battles you would (should) have a ship of fighter/bomber/gb class along so that A) you can kick the enemy around more effectivly and B) make sure that while you're kicking them around they don't try and leave.

Now, I know this isn't my best idea ever...but give it some thought rather then the knee-jerk reaction "don't nerf caps".

And as for the people that said "just thruster away"... do you KNOW how hard it is to prove someone cruised to catch up? I had a MOVIE of that happening and no sanction ever came of it.

I'm not unsypathetic to the Idea in general maybe it would be better if they didn't have them in a few situations
and your reasoning for having to keep smaller ships around is a good one.

I also dont think they should be chasing smugglers in my eyes that is equivalent to letting pirates use destroyers and battleships on traders (no-one else seems to see it that way though) but I voted no simply for the mentioned playerwipe reason.

Do you realize how many smugglers per day we get in omicron 100? The freaking ORDER GUARD system?

If I had one I'd use a battleship against them, but I dont so I use a cruiser instead. I'm sorry if it pisses them off and they have a hissyfit, but they shouldnt have been in that system in the first place.

Indeed...in-RP the NPCs would tear them apart. Since they can't, it's up to the players to do so.

The CD on Battleships allows it more survival, too; it's much more efficient if the BS has some counter against the Bomber scourge, and the CD has that effect quite nicely. 'Encouraging Team Cooperation' isn't going to work that well just by taking the CD away. Any decent fighter pilot can run on his thruster at more than twice the legal speed a Battleship can manage, and strafe while doing it, theoretically never getting hit. The CD rarely even allows the Battleship to stop the fighter-sized craft anyways; what it does best is to knock them out of engine kill so they fly into the BSes guns (which almost never kills them in one pass anyways, and if they fall for it more than twice they need therapy...), and that is the only way a Battleship can survive a bomber horde on its own...the only place this will encourage team playing is in factions, and they already do it if they have any PR sense. The noobs don't care; long as they get their big ship they're happy.

And the same with Alaska..don't wanna get killed?...then dont go there..its so freakin oorp it makes me sick.Sure..i can understand the possibility of letting a starflee or csv through on a one-way trip,but the amount of traders,faction and indies alike is rediculas,so the Cruisers and bigger NEED the cd's.

Actually I was on a navy warship that carried out the very first stop and search activity back in the 80's when it was approved, and that was without helicopters and fast boats (but the ship would do 30 something knots and had a great radar array) and now it is common for US warships to target smugglers.
