I always had lag if i swiched to the equipment or commodity dealer on a PoB. Maybe there is something wrong in the code?I second this. Its been like that on every POB I ever used. The more items you sell to your base the worse it gets. Similarly if you make items for sale at your equipment dealer. I don't know how it works, but I've always found that the more stuff you have, and set prices, the harder it seems to work. RE: Rorry to Admins - Cost of running a stable host? - Singularity - 04-08-2014 Always had that issue in each POB. But now that my general lag is high too, so it evens out the specific POB lag.. If we have 20 members set up a $10 dollar monthly and a couple bigger supporters then we're on the right path. -On another note, what is our current cost and how much of a difference would we need to upgrade? -Are we on a server farm? Are we co-located? The server we currently have is inadequate. Why is the current hosting inadequate? Yes there are some transmission issues, but those are getting sorted. We currently pay very little for a very specific type of hosting that most providers don't provide. Since we are working with limited funds, we try to make the most of every donated dollar. I fail to see how that is "not used properly". (04-09-2014, 02:04 AM)Veygaar Wrote: Interesting responses. I wonder if setting up a monthly donation system would be beneficial for the server. See here; http://discoverygc.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=1236 Monthly donations would be nice, that way a few admins aren't paying out of pocket every month. It's ~€100/month. To upgrade would be rather difficult, we'd need to find a VPS with a high CPU cycle, because FLserver can't multi-core (very well). Those are high end (read; expensive) processors that most hosts don't carry because pretty much anything made this millennium works well with multi-core. I've been thinking about doing some tricks with the newest Intel processors and virtual machines, but again, expensive and time consuming. It's not a server farm. FLserver can barely run on a modern OS. Splitting it across multiple servers is not something that is feasible. There are some things in the works though that I'm not certain I can talk about, so I'll let Kaz or Utrack tell you about them. tl;dr: Our current host is what we need in a server (rare) for pretty cheap (horray!). The downside is their network does weird things sometimes. RE: Rorry to Admins - Cost of running a stable host? - Widow - 04-09-2014 Ok, as a player I want to make a point here. What happens when you buy a kid a new game? Or a puppy? First few months things go great! All the time, effort, and money is put into it. After this time the novelty wears off. Relate this to getting a more expensive, better server. First few months donations may come in. This will be great. After a while the server may or may not run smoothly. If it doesn't, there will be Q.Qing because its a waste of money, and donations will stop. Someone still has to pay. And now lets say it does. I can almost guarantee that a few months down the track the "I can't afford it this month, I wont pay but everyone else will" attitude starts. Perhaps a new game comes out? It only costs $20 on steam, an awesome special. You will play this game more this month, so therefore Disco doesn't need your donation. One by one, people stop donating. Less money coming in each month. But, someone will still have to pay to keep the server up. Who will this fall back on? Why not start donating now, and we look at this again later. When we can see that the novelty wont wear off. Anyone thought that something like DDOS protection for our current server, which isn't actually that terrible, would be a better investment? I wonder if setting up a monthly donation system would be beneficial for the server. Good info. I am aware of the current donation system. I'd be much more inclined to put money into a game that will have stability and a strong connection too. I'll hit up uTrack. RE: Rorry to Admins - Cost of running a stable host? - Colonel Mustang - 02-03-2015 I actually have a very close friend who runs a hosting company, if you tell me what it is you actually need I might even be able to broker you a cheaper deal (although i would expect at least a hug from one of the admins) RE: Rorry to Admins - Cost of running a stable host? - ProwlerPC - 02-03-2015 Oh this old issue. To my knowledge the hardware and connections etc... is already higher tech then what the game is capable of using. Upping anything won't do anything to increase Freelancer's performance. Cannon came close to figuring out how to Freelancer to work with multiple processors (FL is scripted to only use one processor and won't recognize any others) but he was doing it with some kinda trick workaround that would use more then one PC server to run the game so I assume he couldn't get it to use more then one processor on the same board. It's a very old game that would require some re-writing to get it modernized. We don't have the source code unfortunately. |
