Even if you don't intend to become a dev, consider downloading a program like Notepad++ and looking at the Discovery files (the DATA folder has most, EXE\flhook_plugins for plugins). Some files may require other tools to view that you can find with a little Google-fu. Adoxa is a legend in the Freelancer modding community and his site has information, tools, plugins, and mods. If nothing else, you'll learn something and can go create your own mod, with FLHookers and blackjack. My personal background is basically limited to "Hello World" + simple games in "Java 101", tweaking existing mods for DayZ and Minecraft servers, and possibly a script-kiddy phase back in the day (IDIFTL), but that, plus a little reading around the various Freelancer community forums, gave some appreciation and understanding (ex. the market_commodities.ini controlling prices and availability is an eyestrain-inducing mess that involves a lot of toggles and multipliers; it might be possible to create a sort of "limited range" snub system by adjusting the constant_power_draw value of shields so you'll need to use a big ship with docking modules to recharge your core after extended flight in hostile territory). If we're going to use that (imperfect) chef analogy from elsewhere, this is at least the equivalent of learning some basic principles of cooking and a rough idea of tastes and techniques. Dumb example from me, but rather than saying, "Why haven't you spared no expense yet to recreate Jurassic Park so we can eat brontosaurus burgers?!?" I can read up and suggest, "Maybe a blend of alligator and beef with a little seasoning will get us a similar flavor. I don't know what seasoning is best, but is that possible?" And I'll plug this in-game commodity events thread again. If you'd like to see your in-game actions and RP have some effect on the game, here's a start. TL;DR - a little reading can go a long way RE: WHO is willing to save this mod? - Marburg - 05-04-2014 The question begs, why try & mine for new ideas from others? If you have new ideas of your own, roll with it & let those ideas ferment with others & develop over time....If you campaign for others to develop ideas in a simple attempt of motivation, what's your real motivation? Fear? Do whatever you like & let that be your only guide. period. If you lack new ideas of your own to be inspired by, you best get off your ass & get to thinkin' RE: WHO is willing to save this mod? - Govedo13 - 05-04-2014 Personally I would invest some time to help if the people that control disco step down, admit that they need help and start to cooperate with what is left from the community. As long as the decision making is made based on solid arguments with a lot of community input inclusive voting from faction leaders and mods/admins we cannot do wrong. My mission would be to collect the ton of wrong-doing and classify it in different categories. I am looking for total overhaul of the main mod functions listed by priority: 1 System layout 2 Economics/piracy 3 Ship class to ship class interdependence and PvP Balance Stuff that I can give some input but cannot help because cannot code: 1 Official faction perks based on PoB changes. 2 PoB products rebalance and addons of new products. There are 3 really problematic weak points that need to be solved: 1 Decision making process and voting system 2 Coding and programming- not many players have any skill in that area so the mod feature is more or less depending only on those few that can code. 3 Financing and server hosting However the way that discovery works in development department must change drastically or let it die. For the people that say go on log and play- I am sorry but there is no incentive to do so even if I want to play I log and cannot find any interaction then log off. I could write 5-6 pages pointing out the problems however why to waste more of my time when none of the devs bothers to change anything or bothers to recruit people in the dev team that are willing to make those changes? If you have new ideas of your own, roll with it & let those ideas ferment with others & develop over time....If you campaign for others to develop ideas in a simple attempt of motivation, what's your real motivation? Fear? Because I have enough of whining on the forum. Don't get me wrong. There is a time for everything and sometimes it is just good to let ones disappointment out. But there has to be a point when one should stop this and take action. At least we should try, don't you think? So my intension is not to throw in my ideas (well not right now) but to give people (who are really interested) a place were they can throw in their ideas, find someone who is willing to help, e.g. I'm not campaigning for anything (yet) but I think it is good to know that there are enough people out there who (despite the facts) want to contribute, continue and maybe it will just feel good to know that there is a Resistance and not everybody is willing to give up so far. Maybe this is just a try, maybe this will fail but at least all those of you who think it is not yet over have a place now. As for last sentence: I don't get the fear part right away maybe you can explain this a little bit? My motivation is easy explained: I love space. I love Freelancer. And even after I left Disco (for personal reasons) I feel sad that this great idea, game and community is on collision-course. So I want to do what I can, to stop it and to motivate and help. Regards Benz RE: WHO is willing to save this mod? - SnakeLancerHaven - 05-05-2014 How about people get activity on different factions and different places and make indies follow em and guide them to RP. Enlighten the newbs 8| RE: WHO is willing to save this mod? - moebus - 05-05-2014 I see good ideas in this thread and in some others on the forum. I think we need to structure the effort to rebuild disco. What about identifying a list of tasks with clear objectives and task coordinator and form teams to work on these tasks? All motivated people could participate to make this list and then they could be part of one or several tasks depending on the time they want to involve in this project. Also, I think it is probably not efficient to do all of this work on the forum. I think we need other tool, like google doc (other ideas of tools would be appreciated) RE: WHO is willing to save this mod? - Benz - 05-05-2014 (05-05-2014, 04:16 PM)Snake Wrote: How about people get activity on different factions and different places and make indies follow em and guide them to RP. This is a good suggestion! -To be honest: I don't think that my list [Post 2] is a good tool but I want to continue with it until I see a structure. Then I would like to bring the people together. I was also thinking about a project management tool. When time comes I will suggest my idea. But before putting more effort into this (because a project management tool must be administrated as well) I want to know who is with me (us). -And last but not least: Who of the devteam/admins is with us. Until then there is a way to go... Tell me what you think! Benz |
