CAPTAINS LOG - Entry #30: A twist
Date: July 30th, 829 A.S.

After waiting for a week in the fields around the Freeport, we had ended up with little other choice but to approach the station for new supplies.
It shouldn't come as a surprise that the station was rather hesitant at first, a capital vessel coming out of nowhere is already intimidating enough, let alone when it isn't one of the 'locals'.
After telling our story they became a little more sympathetic and some of our wings were able to carry over some supplies, in exchange for much desired credits.

That in and of itself wasn't the surprising part today however.
While we were near the Freeport, we were discovered by a Corsair. A sole Corsair would have a hard time dealing with the Torment, beat up as it is, but if they smelled blood surely more would come.
But lo and behold, my concerns turned out to be unjustified. He was our contact. Mister Leon, in his wisdom, decided to send us to THE CORSAIRS.

*audible groan*
Well, not much to be done about it now.
This 'Matteo' is captain of the CNS-Parebellum and wants to negotiate in the bar of the Freeport.
I suppose its time for some diplomacy.

Small memo to myself, punch Leon if I ever get the chance.

Captain Lucian Perez,
Signing off.

CAPTAINS LOG - Entry #31: A deal with the devil
Date: August 6th, 829 A.S.

Negotiating with the Corsairs proved to be an interesting experience to say the least.
They more or less mandated what was going to happen in return for the repairs and safe passage, however the terms were far from unreasonable.
Probably suspiciously so even; in return they want the Torments engineers to look at the engines of one of their capital vessels engines.
They hope that our knowledge of Libertonian tech will enable us to increase the fuel efficiency of the engines.

However the Corsairs have quite a reputation, probably not entirely undeserved, as such I find myself hesitant to take their word at face value without any safeguards in place.
I ordered the senior staff to place explosives in key locations throughout the ship;
should the Corsairs try anything when we moor with the station we'll be able to take them down with us, or at least deal out a considerable punch.

With negotiations handled we finally set course to leave this accursed, asteroid riddled system, and headed somewhere more open.
It was quite a relief when the jump hole to the Corsair homeworld finally came into view.
I believe Matteo referred to it as the Sparta system.

Once we arrived at the shipyard we were treated to our first glance of the 'Murmillo' class vessel the Corsairs want our Engineers to work on.
Turns out that, according to Matteo, the original design was made by the Liberty Navy and was given to the Corsairs by the Order.
The Insurgency supposedly had dealings with the Order as well, though I can't say I've ever seen one. Mysterious fellows.

While the Corsairs have made significant changes to the design, the crew can at least take comfort in the knowledge that the ship is of Libertonian origin.
This simple fact alone already significantly improves our odds of being able to tweak their engines as agreed.
Especially since what Libertonian tech remains on the ship is almost three decades old.

We might just make it out of this yet.

Captain Lucian Perez,
Signing off.

Date: August 13th, 829 A.S.

It has been a week since the Engineering team was deployed to Rhodes Shipyard for the Parabellum assignment under command of Chief Engineer Mcintyre.
The Corsairs have been rather...strict, in the collabration so far, they no doubt realize they're holding all the cards.
Still, I haven't had the impression they intend to reneg on the agreement, not yet at least. Maybe if Mcintyre's team comes up with bad news.

Speaking of which; it is my understanding that Chief Engineer Mcintyre came back on the Torment today, I assume all in one piece, considering he scheduled an appointment with me later this afternoon. No doubt he wants to discuss the findings of his team and make a recommendation regarding our next step, While I don't know the finer details of engine mechanics, even I can grasp the concept that an upgrade would normally be easier than building one from scratch. Lets hope Mcintyre has good news.

At the end of last week Chief Engineer Mcintyre reported his findings on the Parabellums engine. It seems the "Murmillo" class battleship of the Corsairs uses even older Libertonian designs than we originally thought. Fortunately as expected this only makes our job easier. He went over the specifics, but I must confess most of it went over my head. All in all he seemed to be pushing for upgrading the existing engines though. Frankly I had to agree, if only to make sure that the Corsairs didn't quite as easily get a better grasp on Libertonian technology. If we lose our edge out here, I doubt we'll last very long.

I greenlit the project and sent him and his team to work, I've also asked one of the Corsairs stationed near the Torment to inform Captain Matteo of the progress. I considered a secure transmission, but I'm not entirely sure the Corsairs would like it very much if they detected the Torment was broadcasting coded messages, this seemed like the easiest way to avoid any 'misinterpretations.'

Several days later Chief Engineer Mcintyre came back, a small glint in his eyes. He might have had his reservations about working alongside the Corsairs, but he's nothing if not a professional and I could see he felt a sense of pride and accomplishment in his work, even if it had been slightly more 'resource intense' than initially expected.

Lets see if the Corsairs are pleased enough with their new toy to uphold their part of the bargain.

Captain Lucian Perez,

Captain Matteo has invited me onboard the Parabellum for the test flight with its new engines. Mcintyre assures me there won’t be any complications and has admitted that he’s looking forward to me seeing his work, still I feel some reluctance. It seems strange that the Corsairs would allow an outsider on the bridge of one of their heavy assets, back home we’d never even consider allowing non-personnel on the bridge.

Ah well, I’m in too deep now and I doubt Captain Matteo would accept a ‘no’ for an answer. I have some time to prepare at least, a week should be enough to make the needed arrangements for my absence.

Hmm, perhaps some extra security drills are called for as well.

Captain Lucian Perez,

CAPTAINS LOG - Entry #35: Final Preparations
Date: September 4th, 829 A.S.

I have prepared my crew for my absence as best I can; the senior staff will be running additional security drills, Chief Engineer Mcintyre installed extra camera’s across the ship so we can keep an eye on our Hispanic ‘friends’ during the repairs and every member of the crew has been provided with small arms or improvised weapon that can pass as a tool.

Hopefully these precautions won’t be needed but the Corsairs didn’t earn their reputation by being friendly and neighborly, now that we’re here in this situation it’d be irresponsible not to make sure we get out of this alive.

At any rate, it’s time for me to head out to see Captain Matteo. The repairs are supposed to keep going while I’m gone, hopefully I’ll see her in much better shape when I return.

Captain Lucian Perez,
Signing off.

Date: September 18th, 829 A.S. – ADDED RETROACTIVELY

It’s been two weeks since I stepped onboard the Parabellum as Captain Matteo’s “guest”. I’ve been treated well enough though every suggestion of returning to the Torment has been dismissed as ‘premature’. I’m confident something is wrong, they won’t even let me contact my crew.

I’ve tried looking for a way to patch into the ships communication systems without getting noticed but unfortunately I lack Mcintyre’s technical knowhow, though I suppose he likely struggled deciphering Corsair tech as well.

At least I’ve managed to find a datapad to log these entries on now I don’t have access to the Torments systems. I’ll have to be careful about when I do my recordings however, I have no intention of getting ‘caught’ and providing them with an excuse.

Captain Lucian Perez,
Signing off.

Date: October 17th, 829 A.S. – ADDED RETROACTIVELY

A month. I’ve been on this ship for over a month since my last entry. I’m expected to actively contribute to ‘earn my keep’ which mostly comes down to strategic insight during combat. Not that they listen half the time, my guess is that they’re trying to learn Insurgency tactics so they can pick and choose what they like.

Unfortunately, like most times when it comes to the Corsairs, I have little choice in the matter. In the case of combat, if I were to refuse and they made poor decisions as a result, we’d get blown up. Then I’ll never see the Torment and her crew again.

Hmm the Torment, I wonder how everyone is holding up over there…

Relieved, that is the only way I can describe my state of mind right now. The Parabellum has finally returned to the shipyard and I was able to see the Torment. Repairs have, from as far as one can see from space, come far.

Captain Matteo assured me everything is going to plan, but that there are some difficulties with some of the more advanced systems on the Torment. Frankly I’m surprised they actually kept their word, based on my experiences on the Parabellum. It seems every time they’re up to something suspicious, they end up pulling through in the end..? Corsairs are a strange breed indeed.

I’ll be heading to the Torment soon to check in on the progress proper, I imagine the crew is on edge after all this time. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone again.

Captain Lucian Perez,
Signing off.

CAPTAINS LOG - Entry #39: Technical Complications
Date: November 24th, 829 A.S. – ADDED RETROACTIVELY

Chief Engineer Mcintyre and the rest of the senior staff had considered me dead, not surprising given my long absence. Tensions between the Torments crew and the stations crew have started to rise after my departure, though repairs continued unabated.

After the ‘welcome back party’ the senior staff organized (I still don’t know what that ‘muffin’ really was, nor am I sure I want to know), chief engineer Mcintyre briefed me on the progress of the Torments repairs.

Much of its hull has been restored or replaced, basic weapon functions are operational again and the sensors were fully repaired. Unfortunately the engine is only operating at half capacity and cloaking device that was rigged to the ship at Fort Leniex is still completely inoperable. All in all this lines up with what Captain Matteo told me, speaking of which, I have a meeting with him tomorrow to discuss just that, claims he has a solution.

Let’s see what Corsair creativity looks like.
