Every situation where a superior group has encountered an inferior group - the inferiors are either enslaved or wiped out.
I try to be optimistic that aliens, due to their level of advancement, will be more friendly and peaceful, but if they're anything like humans they will view us as slaves and nothing more.
@Tenacity- You may want to put the words ''superior'' and ''inferior'' under quotation marks. ;)
If the aliens think that they have dominion over other species and the entire galaxy then we will have trouble.
Also people are talking of 'humans infecting the aliens'(War of the Worlds scenario) but it can be the other way around as well- Aliens infecting humans.

Should we ever encounter another race, how the hell will we communicate? Not every creature speaks English as all those sci-fi shows would want you to believe. Ever tried to speak with a polar bear?
Should we encounter them it will most likely be boom boom pew pew, if you ask me. Either they do something to offend us or we them, unless some one invents that <strike>poor excuse so they don't have to add different languages</strike> little device thingy they have in Star trek.
Still though, if there are others out here, chances are they'll be preeeetty far away. I mean, look at life on Earth. That's the result of a couple of events that had perhaps one in a million chance of happening. I doubt the exact same events would happen in say, Alpha Centauri.

The universe is old enough, there no doubt have been previous Earth like planets that may have now been obliterated by their own sun.
Who knows, the universe is pretty damn massive. If we ever have any hope of FTL travel, we'll know if there are other species out there when either we run into them or vice versa.
It's not that hard to communicate with animals, you just have to show respect and take things slow. Much the same with humans. It would take a while but I'd say we'd be able to communicate eventually.
That said, if some alien race appeared above Earth right now they might like the look of Earth's terrestrial surface and go pew pew pew to remove us.

What if the only possible path of evolution that could lead to an advanced organism capable of traveling at ludicrously high speeds leads to a culture much like that of man?
Why should non-terrestrial, highly intelligent sentient life have no morals whatsoever?
Just something to think about.
