After an extensive period of concentrated typing on her comm pad, Katherine finally looks up at the others.

"Well, I've opened a channel with the Hessians, the ball is with them now. I've given all of you access to the channel, but I recommend refraining from sending any transmissions in it....at least not yet.

I've also been informed that my X-shuttle is docked on Freeport 5, filled with supplies and ready for deployment."

She looked around a bit sheepishly before continuing.

"I'm sorry, I was so absorbed writing this, what were you saying about magnetic grappling hooks?"

Not that I'm likely to be able to add anything....

Don't listen to him, he is fantasizing again.

Woelffen said before Bauser could say anything.

Bauer looked at the base commander with a disproving look.

Well, I think you are right that the grappler might be too complex, what about a simple metal net? The planet is not entirely made of flowing soil. When we reach the lower levels we will expand horizontally, building a long network of tunels, then use driller drones to perforate to the lower solid levels, attached to a reinforced cable that will make up the net that will eventually catch the ship, allowing our crews to go down and operate. The system was used a few centuries ago to perforate large asteroids to pull them to safer extraction places. That procedure is obsolete of course, but for this task it could prove useful. Much cheaper, and less prone to failure, I believe we only have one chance, we need to be on the safe side.

If you have any better solution, we are glad to hear about it

Bauer smiled at Katherine, then looked down at his datapad.

"Well gentlemen, I've received the first response in my Hessian channel.
Unsurprisingly, they want to know exactly who's going to be on the team, and in what ships.
It seems like they don't object to scientific work in the area in principle, so for the sake of positive negotiations, I suggest we provide them with all the correct data.

I'd like to hear your opinion on this. If you agree, I'll send them the list as soon as I know it myself.
They have hinted that they would not be pleased about unmentioned ships popping up....well, read for yourselves.

All in all though, their response was positive and I trust there won't be any problems."

Looks like this project is slowly gathering momentum. I can't wait to actually fly again.

She smiles at the group, seemingly lost in thought again.

Maister has always felt a some sort of hatred for the Hessians. His father didn't like them and so didn't his grandfather. Just pirates he used to say. The Bundschuh were another story. It seemed that in Rheinland the support or hatred for the revolutionaries has been and still is a sort of family tradition.

Well...now when we've embarked on this route we should go to the end. I see no point in continuing of the ritual of beating about the bush. Give them our names and our intentions.

He then spent a painfully long half a minute typing on an overly small datapad; a standard model that almost everyone in Sirius had, to make it display a handful of names. It was a rather fiddly task.

Karl Schroeder (planetary research)
Katje Seitz (artefact navigation systems)
Jutta Maaß (pilot)

There is one thing I need not experience in my life. A ship hijacked by the Hessians.
