So really, there is no way to make people happy. Give people an excuse and they will whine their heads off.

What discovery lacks as a mod is a goal for older players. Our progression is tied to the sirian credit, which pretty much dictates what characters you have, what ships you fly and how much investment you have in the game. If this is your only sense of progression, it is when the player has 6bil kicking around and every each patch with something new added is that they can return to disco, blaze through the new content within hours as they throw imaginery pixel credits at the screen, before saying ''k'' and going back to other more fulfilling games.

Those are very good points. But what do older players actually want?

It's a question of people needing to not whine if they may lose and acknowledge it's simply a game. If players would focus on the fight itself, rather than the outcome, disco would be a much better place. I blame it on faction attitudes that may often be perpetuated by a single or small collective of influential individuals.

Raids aren't the same as events that have the gravity of story progression associated with them.

<in a gloomy tired mood> I wish the server had deleted all accounts, and everything. And everybody would start anew. And one suddenly would have things to do, things to want, things to invest time on.

For the rest (and a more realistic appraoch), I am with Spazzy on this.
Veteran players have nothing to spend their credits on.
My only noteworthy expenditure is funding new players' ships... and not even that will dent my banks.

All the working money sinks were killed off.
We need what Spazzy said today in TS: new tier equipment that is 10 times as expensive and marginally better with every update... so you have to keep going, keep grinding... as in all games that are successful over a long time.

And that is occurring.

And in such a circumstance I would quit. I trade to have fun, not to earn credits to avoid having my PvP balance broken.

I think many other people would. There are people out there that absolutely and utterly despise trading - myself included. Then again, I have a distinctive disgust of anything related to capital ships so that's probably why. I'm rolling in around 100-200 million creds at the moment if I'm not mistaken, and if I run out I could sell a ship to the conn vendor/take the AU8 off it and I have money for a new one. (I only fly snubs.)

Now let me talk about the point I actually wanted to make before I saw your post:

Increasing activity in Discovery is hard. Why? Whining.
There is whining everywhere, I know, but it's really really bad when the community is tiny and it still has the guts to whine.
Wars? Whining.
No wars? Whining.
Raids? Whining.
No raids? Whining.

I bet all your ass-cheeks that people would whine if everything were to literally go back in time back to 4.85.
I also am willing to bet all your asses that people would whine if activity were to rise up a hundred fold. Why? Because hey, look at that convoy of completely silent traders! And also, check out those 10+ groups of double-nova Barghests ruining everything they can! And look at that; people that can't be bothered to roleplay in the slightest! I love those guys!
And of course, we cannot forget our favorite official faction dramafests.
"Wow, active faction. +1 hate."
"Wow, inactive faction. +1 hate."
"Wow. Raids. No. +1 hate."
"Wow. No raiding. No. +1 hate."

Of course, there's always that one guys that smiles to everything. But that one guy usually gets shotgunned in the eyes first by the other guys.

So yeah uh.
That's my opinion.

But what about me? I am not a new player around but I never chased neither credits amount nor expensive ships. What about player who is not gathering/spending money?
