My trader will always run (gotta make these pirates work for there cash no?), but if push come to shove and the pirate has be cornered and i have no way of getting away i will pay.

My favorite chase wasn't as a trader... Was my poor little Outcast Rogue Gunboat running from some BSG in Tau-31... Made it to Alpha, would have made it to Malta if a Corsair Gunboat and some Police-tagged capship hadn't been in the way. It was a great run.

Edit: Back on topic... My cardy smugglers with always run, for obvious reasons. Only people going to be bothering him will going for the kill anyway. Drake is a Zoner, so only stupid pirates try to bother him, but if they did he'd stop and pay... Of course, said pirate might find a lot of people unfriendly to someone who'd bother an innocent Zoner.

My good friend AC_Merc told me a long time ago his policy for dealing with pirates.

"I run unless I see that they have a Train CD. Then I pay."

So a trader runs if he can, pays if he can't. How many mobster movies have you guys watched where Joe Pesci points a gun at the truck driver and the truck driver replies with "F&** You! This small delivery of ham and cheese for the social club is worth more than my life and the well being of my kids."

Oh theres another one. What about trader families? The trader trades... what does he trade for? His family. Now, you can't honestly believe that every guy who flies a Train or Transport actually owns the rights to all the profits in the ship. I mean, if you were rich enough to afford to fly around for 3 months in a Container Transport then buying and selling millions of credits worth of product then wouldn't you just hire someone to do it for you? Then maybe buy a few more ships... hire a few more people... make a company... etc...

I think that the problem with Trader RP is that everyone thinks they are their own super corporation. Thats why I trade with RepEx. There is an RP background there, and I get escorts too. Diplomatic ties to help me dodge a few bullets.

Most people trade to make other characters. Maybe we ought to talk about the need for traders to RP as well as we've talked about Pirates and Factions.

Just fought a pirate today. Mostly I see a lot of smugglers. All the same to me.

To me smugglers and pirates seem to be opposites. Other than being unlawful they don't seem to do much of the same stuff.

you have to catch me.
if you don't catch me, I dont consider you a threat.

and, anyway, I'm perfectly willing to pay you every time I pass, if you catch me.

and, bounty your whole faction, sure, why not?
its a good business model.
someone messes with you, destroy them, their family, and their family's friends.

Well, I'm online on a "daily" basis as [N]-Atalawohisdi. You wanna know why pirates are scarce these days ... its because "most" traders do not RP at all ... and the house militaries / police completely overwhelm pirate activity. My faction carried the generic Pirate ID for a few months and I was operating out of Sigma 13 (best place to catch traders btw) and followed traders in and out of Rheinland and Kusari fairly regularly. When I noticed trading was scarce on this route, I'd check the long range scanners and see Tau 31 over populated with traders so I'd head over to Tau 31. I'd scare up the traders there (who were mostly farming cash with no interest in RP). At least I slowed them down.

Pirating is a dieing business because its just plain too difficult. Its far more difficult than being a trader or military / police. Traders just move back and forth making millions upon millions non-stop. Military and police have the overwhelming numbers to back them up. I have rarely encountered 1 or 2 of them without seeing backup show up on the scene. And traders will usually just dock and logout or dock and call for military / police backup. So yes ... piracy is on a decline and will continue to decline because its just plain too difficult and all you get is headache from people yelling at you from all sides.

@ Custo' Benitez: Exactly ... they are not concerned with RP. If they were serious about RP as a trader, they'd stop trading on the route they were killed on.

@ bluntpencil2001: Yup ... traders carrying passengers should not put their passengers in danger ... etc etc etc.

@ Drake: Yes ... Sigma 13 is the best place to pirate. Lots and lots of traders moving between Kusari and Rheinland and between the Omicrons and the houses travel through Sigma 13. Just be careful if you pirate here. If you enter New Berlin, prepare to encounter an angry group of individuals that don't like you being there.

@ Everyone: Nayehiya, [N] tagged vessels, are returning to Liberty. We are trading our Pirate IDs for Liberty Rogue IDs. We intend to play out the local pirate thing as best we can. But if you see our RP as pirates start to decline, there's a couple reasons for that. #1 - LSF and SA are way too powerful and may mass up whenever we begin pirating somewhere (evidence of this was a couple days ago when I successfully pirated a couple ships - ended up 7 vs 1 with me being the odd man out). #2 - traders have a safety zone known as New York. If we can't catch them before they get to New York, we can't catch them. Wish us luck, but I don't see the pirate RP growing anytime soon. You may see it disappear all together.

@ Suggestion for Admins: I've seen on other servers that when a character is killed, a percentage or fixed amount of credits on board the ship of the guy that dies is automatically transfered to the guy that killed him when the guy is killed. This could fix the, "I'd rather die than pay because I'm trying to get my battleship (battleship license)" mentality we are seeing among these non-RP traders. I'm not sure how this is done, probably some additional mod to throw in to the mix that would conduct the transfer of funds from the one who died. This would apply to everyone, not just traders. I think if a trader new he would lose 50 mil if he died, he'd be more likely to pay the 2 mil we demand. And to deal with the pirate that would rather kill the trader for the 50 mil, make a rule that says if the trader agrees to pay, the pirate has to stand down and accept the payment.

Just my 2 cents ... or my 2 bucks if you will.

Actually im pretty sure FL Hook which this server is using has that feature.

I think 5% (at most, maybe only 2%) might be fair, but no more. Otherwise you end up with Terrorists richer than everyone else.

But then you'd have to set up specific limits on what can be asked for in tax against certain ships, because otherwise a pirate encountering a high level character asks for 100mil, then just blows them up.

Don't think this is gonna happen.

I do agree with Archelon that pirating is hard... Pirating to actually make money is even harder. And Unseelie... One reason I think that pirating is dwindling is because so many traders are now following your example and putting out absurd bounties against anyone who bothers them. Feel free to continue doing that... Juno is especially well known for it... But expect such actions to chase off potential pirates.
