Independent Miners Guild Comm System (GuildComm) - Rainy Day - 02-26-2012 Signal Strength: Excellent ID: Jacob Walker To: Guild Comms Subject: Weapon Request Source: Jakarta, Tau-39 'Eyo Jake here, I'd like to request a set of four Golden Blades to aid me in my escort duties. While our own weaponry is quite useful, I find myself lacking something with more of a "kick" if that's the right way to put it. I look forward to having an answer on my request. Respectfully, Escort Recruit Jacob Walker Signal Terminated Independent Miners Guild Comm System (GuildComm) - Jack_Henderson - 02-26-2012 Mr. Frühauf, your request for 4x Diamondback guns was granted. Independent Miners Guild Comm System (GuildComm) - Stefan - 02-27-2012 Is this thing... wait... here... wai- oh. Priviet, miners! It's quite good to be talking with all of you as a tryout, I shall try not to take much of time. This message is to report that I have arrived on Java and already started my work there! I departed this morning from Aland Shipyard, down on the Omegas, where I had received the go for my assignments. Provided the Annie I had purchased that morning, and baptized "Yekaterinburg", I took my old fellas to the Taus before starting the work. And if you allow me to say, I fell in love with the ship! You guys know how to build one amazing companion. A pleasant flyin' to Java, overall. It was afterwards, however, that I got quite suprirsed by the disposition of the work there! As soon as I undocked the station, I was aborded by a fella' call signed' Geolog, IMG IFF'd. He asked if I could mine and I eagerly accepted. It didn't stop there, however, soon after we reached the mining zone near the B2 sector, another fella popped up - also IMG IFF'd - with the callsign /\Jack.Croce. Before I knew it, I had two jobs to finish! It felt like the good, honest work I was looking for. I'm sending a few shots of the comm log for further curiosity. Dah svidaniya! Independent Miners Guild Comm System (GuildComm) - Stefan - 02-27-2012 I am... getting... the hang... a-ha! Morning! If I thought I would be going to send a new message so soon, I'd saved the last report! No matter, I'll just fill another one. I was told that as a recruit, one of my tasks would be helping the guild on a mining expedition... so... I kinda did. Not sure if that's what constitutes the task 'zo. I got a long range comm this morning from a fellow guild recruit, asking for a miner. I answered, we mined Niobium, he shipped. It was a quick, profitable work and I'm hoping he reached his destination safely. There are a few shots on the data stream, for further inspection. Hoping to hear from you soon! Dah svidaniya! Upon receiving this message I, Mara Arin, responded directly to the aforementioned Guild Master in private about taking the assignment. On 25. of February 819 A.S. around 2:00 was completed and on 27. of February 819. A.S. this report was compiled. The assignment was to survey the following two areas: S1) Kepler system, Kuryo Cloud an outcropping of a larger "Kuyro anomaly" S2) Sigma 19, Donryu Cloud a medium-sized offshoot of the Edge Nebula 2) [color=#CC6600]ABSTRACT (S2) This survey was conducted using the "Uruz" battle transporter modified to withstand gas explosions. Thanks to the effect of "Faraday shield" we were safe from the cloud's electrical storms, but not from the hostile vessels which pass through the cloud to reach a jump hole. For that reason I asked a pilot named Jacob Walker to accompany my crew and me to the cloud which he did without asking why was I going there. With his help, we were able to observe the cloud, it's storms and twin planets named Hades and Cerebus without interruptions. We found that this rather small cloud is composed of large quantities of gases, mostly methane, and that it is composed of two zones, both of them being very unsafe due to Corsair and Outcast marked ships passing through the cloud frequently. 3) [color=#CC6600]PREPARATION (S2) After we finished loading the equipment from Java, we undocked and made our way towards the Sigmas. Knowing that such expedition would be dangerous, as the cloud is very close to unlawful space, I invited a recruit named Jacob Walker to escort me to our destination. He didn't ask anything in return, but I thought that I should at least share some of my knowledge of space which, it seems, he enjoyed very much. We traveled through Kusari space until we reached Aomori station on which we landed. Once we were docked I told the quartermaster to find and buy the same expedition cargo we used in our last survey with the exception of oxygen. While he was preparing the supplies I decided to hit the bar and eavesdrop on the conversations people were having. After several minutes the quartermaster called me and told me everything is ready for take off, so I paid my expensive cocktail which was cheap compared to the priceless information I heard. It seems, the cloud is hiding two jump holes and that the third is very close, each leading to pirate controlled systems, so I told the crew to be prepared for anything. After taking off, we met up with Mr Walker who waited for us at Gas miner Ogashawa in the Sigma 19 from where we continued to Donryu cloud with only the minimum 4) [color=#CC6600]PROCESS (S2) Once we arrived on the perimeter of the cloud we put a probe out to determine the type of gas and the cloud's density. We continued to take readings across the whole cloud which we passed several times. After surveying the whole cloud we went to take camera shots of jump holes and their relative position to planet Cerebus. We found that Omicron Beta jump hole in in the outer part of the cloud while Okinawa jump hole is on the perimeter of it, but still in the inner part. We had a few encounters with hostile vessels, but in order to honor they wish and my word, I've decided not to take camera shots of their ships' nor disclose their names and they in return didn't bother us when we surveyed the cloud. I think it was a fair deal considering the situation despite the fact that they might have committed unlawful acts in the past. I have full confidence that Mr Walker would have been able to defend our ship, but it isn't my job to enforce the law. 5) [color=#CC6600]RESULTS (S2) A) [color=#CC6600]Cloud constitution The Donryu cloud itself is not homogeneous, but consists of two distinguishable parts. The outer part is shaped like a ring made of gases, mostly methane, and has a number of small solid asteroids which are themselves mostly made of condensed and solidified methane gas while the inner part has no such obstructions. The gas is very dense in the outer ring making it hard for scanners to penetrate more then a few kilometers and solid gas asteroids don't help in any way as they make passing through the cloud rough and uncomfortable. The inner part of the cloud, however, is more hospitable as there are no solid objects there except for twin planets. B) Planets The planets within the cloud are in the inner part of it, named Hades and Cerebus, which may explain why it is less dense then the outer ring. Sending a probe reveled that their atmosphere is composed of methane, while we have little information from what their core is made of because our probe was crushed by the extreme pressure within the planet itself. We think the core consists of larger, heavier molecules which aren't light enough to resist the gravitational pull, such as metals, but we cannot be sure until we find better plated probes. Hades and Cerebus are planets that sucked all the gas in the innermost part of the cloud creating a disproportion in density. This is both beneficial and harmful at the same time. Low density allows scanners to penetrate further into the cloud and increase visibility, but at the same time it hinders base's ability to stay naturally hidden. C) Anomalies and hazards A single anomaly was found in the outer dense ring, south of the Omicron Beta jump hole. It appears to be a part of a destroyed ship, mostly likely a lightly armored vessel similar to the Starflier. Close inspection determined that the ship is empty and doesn't pose an obstacle in base construction. There are two main hazards that will be a problem if we were to construct a base in Donryu cloud first being the electrical storm. The storm is present in the outer ring as gas molecules are rubbing each other causing electrical discharges that may hit a ship or a base. The problem does not present itself if the storm discharges on a ship or a constructed base as they are protected thanks to the effect of "Faraday shield", but if it hits a base while being constructed. If the latter happens, whoever is not protected by the aforementioned effect would be dead in seconds. The second problem is a high amount of traffic composed of Corsair and Outcast vessels, which could decide to attack the base if the investor is not in a good standing with the unlawful groups. 6) [color=#CC6600]CONCLUSION (S1) The Donryu cloud has only two places upon which a base could be built and those are the inner and the outer part. They each have their upsides and downside which I will outline. Base construction in the clear inner part of the cloud would make the construction easier, cheaper and less dangerous, however there is a risk the base might be destroyed. Because it would be close to both planet Hades and Cerebus there is a possibility that they might pull the base towards themselves making it crash into their atmosphere. If on the other hand, we were to construct the base in orbit of one planet there is a possibility the other planet might pull it out of the orbit and make it fly away from the cloud. The only place for a base to be constructed, in my professional opinion, is between the two planets as their gravitational forces would negate each other making the base stay in place or equip the base with auto balancing propulsion system that would force the base to stay in orbit around one planet. However, if we were to construct the base in the dense outer part of the cloud, the construction would be unsafe due to electric discharges. That would force us to build the base in pieces and ship the parts to the cloud for them to be merged together. Despite the dangers and initial cost, a base built here would be naturally hidden from scanners and safe from the gravitational pull of nearby planets. Once constructed, the base would thanks to "Faraday shield" effect be safe from the electrical discharges. Unfortunately, the base would also have to be built away from the jump holes as they do themselves have a gravitational pull which might destroy the base if it were to approach it. At the end, I'd also like to add that transporting oxygen to the base should be done with outmost caution as if the oxygen leeks into the methane rich cloud it could cause an explosion if the right mixture of oxygen and methane was to lit up. It is possible to construct it in both locations, but there are certain requirements that need to be met first. They are listed and explained in my previous reports. Constructing a base in Kuryo cloud, in the most suitable zone, would require us to clear the area of dark matter particles using compressed oxygen. By my calculations 100000 container units of oxygen would be required to secure the construction zone as well as help reduce the amount of drugs one has to take not to succumb to "Pressure Sickness". Radiation is also a problem and seeking help from organizations which have developed powerful shields with radiation deflecting capabilities would be needed. One of those would be "The Order" who I've read are often fighting in systems which have strong radiation present. Once those pre-requirements are met, base shell assembly should begin by gathering asteroids and combining them using precise energy lasers. Once that's done, making the large asteroid hollow would be the last difficult step before constructing internal infrastructure. On the other hand, constructing a base in Donryu cloud presents it's own problems. The problem with constructing a base in the inner part is the danger of planets pulling the station and crashing it into their atmosphere. To avoid this, the station would have to be built between the two planets, in plain sight, so they negate each others' gravitational pull. That would mean that the base would be visible to everyone, which could defeat the purpose of it's construction in the first place, but I'm still pointing this out if my presumption about this is incorrect. Constructing a base in the outer dense ring would hide the base, but it's construction would be very dangerous due to electric discharges. For that reason, making base components in a shipyard and then delivering them to the cloud would be adviseable. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if the parts would fit through the jump gate, so this might not work the way I envisioned it. As my final thought, I'd say Kuryo cloud is far more suitable for base construction then the Donryu cloud despite the raging dark matter storm. However, is it up to the investor to decide, whoever he/she might be. I'm also very surprised no one ever came to visit me to check how I am conducting the survey nor did anyone offer to defend me. This is very unusual as I'd thought someone with the money to construct a base, would be able to at least offer minimal security and inspect me in the field. This was either a result of a misscommunication or someone has great faith in my abilities. This survey was completed and concluded on 27. of February 819. I do not entirely share your conclusions that the dark matter cluster can easily be dispersed by venting standard matter within. A particulate storm with electromagnetically inert particles travelling at near relativistic speeds... An inert gas (I'd suggest using helium - less volume, less volatility for the same effect) would possibly reduce the gravitational influences, but not the ionizing and nucleodisruptive effects of matter/darkmatter particle collisions. I'm quite frankly not convinced this is a suitable environment to start a construction project in - the dangers to the construction crew would be extreme. The Donryu site could work better. Dispersing some highly conductive beams, possibly even a small framework, at the edges of the construction site could quite easily nullify the dangers posed by static discharges. Faraday shielding (molecular shielding with a conductive shield bubble) is an effective shield once the station is operational, and should help to protect any construction ships. As long as we do not plan any EVA until the station shielding is operational, the danger should be minimal. As for your suggestion to provide security for these surveys - if your survey mission required it, why did you not request it? I'm certain arrangements could have been made. I only voiced the need for such a mission to be done, the particulars on how it is executed, I tend to leave to the person handling it. A miscommunication, I am sure. I will report the findings to the customer. There may be one additional survey on the horizon - but if so, this one will be far less dangerous. **** Transmission Closed **** Independent Miners Guild Comm System (GuildComm) - Ganimed - 03-02-2012 *** From: Mara Arin, stationed at Battleship Hood *** *** [color=#CC6600]To: Johnathan Sanders *** *** *** Affiliation: IMG, Research and Exploration Division, Recruit rank Greetings Mr Sanders. I'm not sure why you again addressed my non existing husband... if you have heard any rumors about me getting married, I'll have to disappoint you. I'm glad to see you are happy with my reports, as my team and I put a lot of work into gathering all the data and compiling it. If there is something else I can do for the Guild, just say so and I'll jump right on it. I'm sure you know how the saying goes... "Idle hands are the Devil's tools". There indeed seems to be a miscommunication, allow me to explain. When I said "...I'm also very surprised no one ever came to visit me to check how I am conducting the survey nor did anyone offer to defend me. This is very unusual as I'd thought someone with the money to construct a base, would be able to at least offer minimal security and inspect me in the field." I was referring to the investor who's identity I still don't know. If I asked for extra security, you'd then need to ask the investor or assign someone from the Guild to guard me which would in turn postpone the survey. I'm not sure how much competition there is, but if it was postponed, the investor could turn to another company and you'd lose the contract. I also wanted to point out that lack of investor's involvement into this survey tells me they were either not interested or had great faith in my ability to provide them with accurate data. Now that we got that out of the way, I'd like to argue and support my claims regarding my final thoughts about the base building sites. Venting large amounts of gas would help in the short term, securing the construction site for vessels that have powerful lasers which would merge the asteroids into a sphere-like object. Because the remaining asteroids are extremely dense a meter thick layer would survive in such a storm for about fifteen years, not to mention the security it would provide to the construction teams inside the hollow asteroid. The Donryu cloud is a good option too, but I'm not sure where would you ground the conductive beams and if they could survive the extreme heat caused by lightning strikes. The Faraday shield effect unfortunately cannot be achieved until the actual framework is built meaning our construction ships wouldn't be protected at all and even if we were to generate a shield before the actual construction begins, it would require constant maintenance as it would be very likely to overload from absorbing discharges of high voltage. Everything else that you have pointed out stands as it is and I thank you on sharing your knowledge and opinion, but I'm still in favor of constructing a base in Kuryo cloud. It is up to you to decide how you're going to present the information I gathered in this survey, but be advised that if they are unhappy with either my results or your presentation, they are likely going to turn to another expert. |
