LSF in Alaska - sn!p3r - 07-16-2008

Quote from mb52

Quote:I was thinking today, of how hard it is to actually confirm who has access, short of making a long list of people, and having it nearby...

So why not implement a simple Code and pass it on to all people that are authorized.

This code could simply be a random number, example... 23451.

So when you detect a ship in zone 21, you demand they give you the access code, to which anyone with it would PM it back. Then we know they belong there.

This way here, we know right away if someone doesn't have access, and can blast them. Of course it would have to be rotated every now and then, but it wouldn't be hard to keep track of.

It could potentially open up some RP too, which is always a good thing.

Thoughts?

CODE

Example exchange 1-

Navy patrol- unidentified ship, please transmit access codes
Unidentified-????
Navy patrol- unidentified ship, You are in violation of restricted space, turn away immediately

CODE

Example 2

Navy patrol- unidentified ship, please transmit access codes
Navy ship- Transmitting access code 23451
Navy patrol- Access code confirmed, you may pass

You can register, the forum is for anyone, the stuff for actual liberty forces is passworded

LSF in Alaska - chovynz - 07-16-2008

That idea is a good one.
In terms of the Angels helping new players (who often seem to be the most problematic about the Alaska issue;- generally - there are of course exceptions.)

Do you want us to help new people who are in LSF
or want to join the LSF, by giving them some pointers?
Or is that the faction leaders place?

Just thinking out loud here how we can compliment this code idea.
Obviously those who aren't part of the forums won't get the access codes - easily and first off.
In any case, one of the Angels first goals is to get them onto the forums.
But more than that, how can the Angels help the LSF / LN with the players,
if someone wants access to Alaska? Where do we send them?
(Let me rephrase that: if we find someone with the intention of RPing to
get into alaska for any reason, where do we send them so that they can RP
on the forums for the current access code?)

I hope this is making sense.

Also what happens when the access codes are sold/given/leaked?

LSF in Alaska - RickJames - 07-16-2008

Chopper wrote: I think LSF should have very different goals from those of the SA (Navy).

RickJames Replied:We do have very different goals. However, we also share some of the same exact goals. Even if the LN, LSF, and LPI combined into one mass faction to handle everything in Liberty.we still would not be able to handle it all.

Chopper Replied: If you'd be so kind to share them with us then? I mean - goals.

Gather Intel on Rheinland, Outcasts, The Order, Liberty Rouges, Lane Hackers, and Xenos.

Cause discord and divisiveness in the general population of all of the above. Impair and or disrupt the logistics and known infrastructures of all of the above. Subvert and turn individuals of all of the above into intelligence assets. These goals are accomplished through various means such as but not limited to bribery, blackmail, assassination, addiction, subterfuge, and psychological and chemical warfare. All of which is done in such a way that it can not be traced back to the LSF let alone Liberty.

RickJames wrote: To understand the LSF you should research the CIA and their Special Activities Division, the FBI, the NSA, & DARPA for a start. The LSF embodies most of those agencies in addition to many more.

Chopper Replied: As you stated later, LPI - FBI, since there are no local police factions in FL. So, that leaves you with foreign business and secret operations.

Absolutely. The LPI should hold certain duties that the FBI does for the USA. However, once again it is not that simple.

The LPI are Liberty Police Incorporated. The key word being Incorporated. They are a privately held Corporation that runs as a for profit business. To me this means the LPI cannot be the sole entity responsible for the internal security of Liberty. So yes I do feel the LPI can be given vast responsibility in Liberty. However, there must also be a check and balance system of over-site concerning sensitive National Security matters. This to me is where the LSF fills in.

Also, I once again must stress that the LSF should not be looked on as a single Real World agency. That goes for the Liberty Navy and Liberty Police Incorporated as well. Each of the 3 Liberty factions encompasses many different real world agencies. Many of which overlap into the other 2 factions and is why there is so much cooperation between the 3 factions.

RickJames Wrote: We have Agents in Rheinland. We have Agents in Omicron Alpha. We have Agents in Omicron Minor. We have numerous ongoing operations to gather intel, fund revolutionaries and insurgents, subvert and destabilize populations, and more. But they are secret both for RP reasons and playability reasons. Revealing them would mean many characters with a lot of work put into them would become useless. Hopefully in time once we have a nice big RP story to tell for each one, in addition to creating a replacement for them, we will reveal their stories.

Chopper Wrote: That wasn't really my point. Spies are ok, but they are just a piece. I meant like training and supporting enemies of your enemies. It's done in the real world and it's a basic for every war preparation. Don't get me wrong, I know it's really hard to find something different to do on LSF. That's why I wouldn't call these posts "flaming", just some constructive criticism in order for that faction to work better.

Im pretty sure what I wrote was a whole lot more than just spies. Fund and support revolutionaries. Yeah..we do that. Credits, Engine Components, MOX, Plutonium, Light Arms, Military Vehicles. Escorts, backup, diversions. If it will help disrupt a clear and present danger to Liberty will do it. Red Hessian Army supported. Bundschuh supported. Gas Miners Guild supported. Landwirtrechtwegung supported. Unioners supported. Corsairs supported. Bounty Hunters Guild supported. Wonder were the Cardamine came from that some RM Gunners Mate is addicted to

RickJames wrote:However, we also share some of the same exact goals. Even if the LN, LSF, and LPI combined into one mass faction to handle everything in Liberty.we still would not be able to handle it all.

Chopper Replied:This is so not true. Lawful forces in Liberty outnumber unlawfuls like 5:1 at least.

In addition, the unlawful players that are active in Liberty are some of best pilots in Discovery. Add to that the fact that they also have much better ships and weapons and it translates to domination. We win maybe 1 out of 3 or 4 encounters. I dont count the unlawful indies and smugglers. We try and dominate them with numbers and the LN use of capitals. However, we do that because in 30 to 60 minutes we will once again be assaulted by player factioned aces. Liberty is not like most of the rest of Sirus were you can fly around for hours without a single encounter. Even Alpha and Gama are quite in comparison. An invasion of Alpha or Gamma are big things. An invasion of Liberty is a daily occurrence

Chopper wrote: Anyway, I think you should spend more time in Alaska then you do now. I also think that you should send agents to Omicrons to investigate Nomads. Also, I think that you should send some agents to Rheinland to fight against RM on RHA/Bund side. Just a symbolic number, like 2. I don't mean to bash RM out of the existence. Of course, in RP, Liberty would deny connections with these people. Similar thing could be done in Kusari to help the Bretonians. Situation is hot. If Rheinland and Liberty go to war, it will be 2vs2, and they need to weaken Kusari first.

All of these are great ideas and are happening. Well except for spending more time in Alaska. We do operate there. However, if we increased our time in Alaska many people would complain and we would once again see a thread about how the LSF should not be in Alaska as it should only be usable by the Liberty Navy and how even then only the top brass of the LN should be there. In addition, the main goal in Alaska is to stop smugglers. I agree it is an important role but to make it a primary focus would only increase the pvpwhore reputation so many people pin on us. Oh there always in Alaska so they can easily PVP the poor smugglers and traders. If they were any good they would be in NY fighting the hackers or xenos or rouges. We can not please everyone. We just do what we can.

Chopper wrote: I mean, LSF is really hard to RP, but it probably has the most potential for RP.It also has the largest ZOI, and it also has most possibilities.

LSF is extremely hard to RP well. We do have the largest ZOI..in theory. Unfortunately in practice it does not work. Going anywhere outside of Liberty and its border systems with a =LSF= prefix to your name, and LSF tag and LSF IDcauses endless arguments and drama. Going anywhere outside of Liberty and its border systems with not LSF tag or =LSF= prefix but with LSF ID causes everyone to mention the fact in system chat and once again causes no end to arguments and drama. Are undercover work is done with Merc ID, or Trader ID or Smuggler ID or Freelancer ID. Which makes doing undercover work fairly difficult since even though we are LSF we must make sure whatever we are doing not only is allowed by the ID we are using but also does not conflict with the LSF ID we are not using. Like I mentioned before it is a shame we cannot be more overt outside of Liberty so people can see what were doing and yet still allow us to do it. Playability wise it just does not work. Even the occasional sighting of an =LSF= character in Delta or Kappa causes the flames to roar on the forums. We can also look at the Intel mission of the 522nd in New Berlin. OMG..so much drama and Outrage. Just thinking what would happen if an LSF IDs ship was helping the RHA in a fight with the RM. Good lord just the thought of the repercussions of something like that gives me a headache.

Chopper wrote: As I said, constructive criticism. Don't shoot me.

I agree. It was very constructive criticism and I greatly appreciate it.

LSF in Alaska - Jinx - 07-16-2008

its a lot of discussion about a system that is mostly one thing : boring. - alaska has the largest liberty shipyard that is probably most advanced ( juno ) but unfortunately, its undockable. it has 2 prison stations with a high security label - and THATS IT.

further than that, it has a lot of ice, a few nomads and a shortcut to the far omicrons. - however, it only takes 10 more minutes to go through tohoku to delta. - so if people were not too lazy, they could easily use tohoku ( its not a pain, i use it all the time )

what i d like to know is - "for what reason do all the people want to claim alaska now?" - we figured that out in the BHG thread. they are not interested in alaska more than any other system, they fight the nomads. - the nomads come there from major / minor - and thats about it. if the nomads left alaska, the BHG would, too. - so the BHG is not too interested in zone 21 / alaska.

now what do the LSF want. - i mean honestly. - a convenient way to the omicrons, i suspect. - but in RP it should only be used in RPed events like an ambush on minor ( under an RPed event i understand something with a history written up in co-operation with the order .... not just some random pvp ambush cause the chat list suggests that there are order players around and the liberty lawfuls feel bored )

same should apply to anyone using the gate. - i miss that kind of roleplay from EVERY faction that used the gate lately. - i haven t seen anything written up from individuals nor playerfactions when they used the alaska - new york gate.
so, if we think what a playerfaction does is golden, there does not need to be a solid RP reason to use the gate - cause like anyone that is not in the faction, they need a good reason to use it, too. - being in a faction is no ticket to become lazy.

now, if ppl don t treat using alaska as an event ( i mean the part with zone 21, the BHGs in alaska do not need an event, they are at a permanent event [ called war ] against the order and nomads and dont use the gate anyway ) - maybe we re taking all the RP stuff too far, really. i don t have a problem with people simply using the gate like they use new york california.

in RP, the alaska gate would rarely be used. it could probably be deactivated - and when a "high ranking officer" wanted to use it - he would apply for it. ( make a request at an admin ) - and the bureaucracy would take months till he was allowed ( actually transferred ) to alaska - THAT is realistic. ( and suddenly, its not a shortcut at all anymore )

no one in harcore RP uses this gate commonly and at leisure. - those that CAN will most probably have a nice office on manhatten and spend their time golfing and meeting exciting people. those that DO pass it, will probably only do it on orders at the end of a long chain of paperwork.

so, i d like to know from the factions ( the NPC factions ) - why do they want to use the gate regularly. isn t it military habit to deploy troops somewhere - and then leave them there? - so if someone RPs a char that is guarding alaska, let him do it. but why would that person need to go to new york?

communication will prolly work from alaska to new york, he will have his quarters on one of the stations. and the next 3 or some years will be spent in alaska, no need to travel.

now you ll say "how boring" - so, thats where the "game" starts. chars want to travel, - no one roleplays a guy that is deployed somewhere and stays there forever. - good! - so its a game and we don t take chars dedication and jobs too serious. - sometimes they inspect a smuggler in california and the next day they ambush minor through alaska ( now thats really ooRP, innit? or what job description should that be ) - but thats how we play the game. - so can t we treat alaska just as lax as we treat our characters jobs? it ll only support our roleplay there.

the problem with a dedicated alaska or zone 21 guard is that its utterly boring. a ship that never moves and only tells approaching ships that they must not enter that zone - ..... well, i can think of a ton of things i d rather do in my sparetime.

LSF in Alaska - Linkus - 07-16-2008

After an incident with the LSF and a trigger happy independant, they quite clearly intend to keep Alaska for themselves.
A ship carrying a Nomad Power Cell going to the research stations in Alaska (Which the independant claims did not exist. Not in RP however as they didn't have trouble going on about them knowing of Alaska) was stopped and given no chance to explain itself. Whilst one officer seemed to actually be listening, another ordered them to open fire. A prison liner with simple turrets and no bots/bats was deemed a threat obviously.
After a bit of back and forth talking, one officer said that only LSF and Liberty Navy vessels were allowed into Alaska. Yet they give people no chance to explain themselves.

Why are you bringing such an old example on the table, that happened like a month ago.

I was =LSF=Point.Hope

Unless you are speaking about an other event...

Once I get home I'll try to figure out a way to implement teh code idea,,,and making sure no one abuse it.
