They would get torn apart or send into uncontrollable dives. Atmosphere has gravity, friction, turbulence, etc. Vehicles built to be used inside an atmosphere would still be necessary, and would most likely be used against space craft or transports entering the atmosphere. While a space ship can work well against ground-based vehicles, by virtue of having a shield, aircraft could move far faster within the atmosphere than a spaceship would be able to. So airplanes would still be necessary and still exist. But the Air Force would still not exist, these vehicles would be under the command of the Army, as they are used for planet-based combat, which is what the Army would control.
