RE: Discussion: Barge Removal - Pacificator - 09-04-2014 Rigthy Oh ! I come back after absence and bump on this thread. Being an old Barge user since the - short - opening of these ship on request years ago, I will dutifully give my 2 cents : 1/ The constructive way Giving we rule out jump trade and mass storage, I think an advanced battleship is a good option. No overwhelming weaponry, way less commodity cargo, but some strategical bonuses such as large docking facility for snubs AND some capitals (GB, Cruiser). Jumping it is to be kept possible. The way I see a faction massive battle is a Barge, couple of Big Ass capitals and a jumper will arrive on the battlefield, and then the barge will unload all snubs, GB and others, and will be answered by the same from the armada opposed to them. Barge can still carry enough resources to jump back. That's an idea but hey, I am not a 'Battlemaster' and have seen and participate in only few of them... 2/The stuff you told us not to say Of course you can trade with it. I have used my fingertips around here some times ago to try to explain that trading with a barge, if you properly nerf it, is not the most practical nor profitable way to trade. Look : At the moment, giving the right permission on POB base, i make 250 Mil in 3 hours of game play, alone with a BWT. During the good old days *nostalgic music playing in the background*, I and few others used to organize big trades with the barge, out of the lanes of course. They were 'advertised' on forum, so convoy were nicely guarded and proudly crossing systems. Sometimes we managed, sometimes we got blasted. We sure involved a lot more people than what I can do now, proper RP, authorization from main houses, BHG and local police involved all this for 125 Mil profit / trip that had to be splat with all the parties ! Altogether we were certainly not making as much as now and involving way more people, so economical or RP unbalance isn't a valid argument and never was... If you nerf it properly. Let's not forget that all expected role play ultimately depends on the guy behind the keyboard. I hate seeing a barge in an asteroid field, or in any OoRP situations. Giving the proper rules it would have make a nice activity generating way of trading. The only answer to this that has ever been given by admins is 'That is not why we originally intended it'... *Real life mode on* I brought a big propeller from a wrecked ship in Valetta Gran Harbor (the real Valetta, capital city of Malta, were I live and write from). Given a bit of work, it is now a very classy, reasonably cheap and useful glass table in my living room, despite the fact that it was not originally intended for... RE: Discussion: Barge Removal - Pacificator - 09-04-2014 (09-03-2014, 08:03 PM)Moriarty. Wrote: The barge was, from what I understand, smaller and could trade using lanes. This was what barge owners were doing before the implementation of JDs. Or might be that, the Barge was introduced in the mod after JDs were implemented. The ship was here for a long time, but not available. Then one day, the gates opened wide. Too wide if you ask me now. Quite similar in size, but for the 2 front reactors that were put here in 4.86 - I think - in order to prevent lane trade, the first version was indeed able to use lanes and had a very decent cruising speed (300 if I remember well). Lane docking was difficult anyway - the only way to properly achieve it was to fast dock at cruising speed. But nothing was actually more difficult and frustrating than docking it on a Jump gate. The ship was literally available on simple demand with 600K, no RP justification. I even brought two just for the sake of it ! Results were that within weeks barges were seen a bit everywhere, stuck in House space, blocking gates and lanes, massively OoRP. This I think led the board of admin taking drastic measure to nerf it several time until what you see now, a bastard of a ship that serves no more purpose if you cannot jump it. *He jumps on stage, fist risen high above* I had a dream ! A dream were standard lane traders and barge traders were flying aside, one fast one slow, one small one big, all together without hatred or unfair advantages under the benevolence of God Almighty and his Angels, all watching over us to make sure equilibrium was maintained. But God decided differently, and my dream is gone... RE: Discussion: Barge Removal - hades durin - 09-04-2014 One reason to have a barge is jumptrading, the other is rp... so best way to deal with it is to reduce cargo size down to 10k, while still having the same size and values. that way the jumptrading is nearly useless with barges and the roleplayers have a mobile base. Opposing Jump Trading and RP is in my humble opinion the root of the mistake. Both can easily been accomplished at the same time. For then why not opposing plain trading to RP ? Furthermore, can someone explain to me exactly what do they mean by mobile base ? What exactly do you do in space under the appellation of mobile base ? RE: Discussion: Barge Removal - NoMe - 09-05-2014 or make it a good hight target, i mean that this heavy transporter must have 20 secoundary slots, to have an enought good answer for the funny bombers who want try their firepower on it! and +1 for heavy docking module the ship could be an event RE: Discussion: Barge Removal - Gypsie Skripto - 09-05-2014 I just see barges being rammed to uselessness in these "grand battles" everyone is already picturing themselves at. If you guys are so butthurt about 20 barges in the server, I'd say make them undockable on PoBs, tops, but these battletransport ideas just have no foot in reality. Seriously, have you ever flown a barge? RE: Discussion: Barge Removal - Euca - 09-06-2014 Barge Debates are the best debates. I like the idea of changing them into an actual PoB, like a stationary one, but that would be probably painful to impliment and painful to coordinate. For example, BMM has 2 Barges at the moment, what are we going to do with 3 (including the Tower) PoBs? I do like the idea of removing their jumping ability and restricting PoBs to 5kers and below. If I read Zed's comment right, that should be achievable, right? Super-Carrier is also a viable option, imagine corporate factions finally being able to manufacture super-carriers for their military. Corporations would get a lot more attention than before. Either way, I agree that the Barge needs to be changed, but perhaps not deleted, since there are obviously ways to reincarnate it into something else more useful. RE: Discussion: Barge Removal - Siren Stone - 09-06-2014 I agree with what Scourgeclaw said, make it a supercarrier, possibly with a reworked design as well as name. Make it an SRP vessel for those factions that actually put forth the effort to "Build" it in RP would be interesting to see one of these jump into a system teaming with Pirates or Lawfuls and suddenly 20 ships of different classes start undocking. Imagine being on the opposite side of who evers just jumped this thing into the frey. I know I'd be like, "Were gunna need more ships"
Just my two cents. Safe flying. RE: Discussion: Barge Removal - 7AlphaOne1 - 09-06-2014 well, I am all for removing it. atleast put an end to powertrading and powerpiracy threads. but I suggest replacing it with something REALLY useful for the RP environment. Many factions have been asking for ships now. atleast one of these requests could be fulfilled. my two cents across the Ganges. RE: Discussion: Barge Removal - US| - 09-08-2014 ![]() My corporation used to use it for jump trading but as of late has only been using it to transfer helium between our import and export bases as it's easier to move 40k at a time vs 5k. we fly our barge once in a blue moon sometimes it does get used for extra storage when both our bases are full of helium. We would hate to see it removed but if it happens it happens we won't be mad either way
