PRISM: Let's drop Skype for Freelancer and move to something else. - Pinko - 06-17-2013

PRISM is something I find disgusting and that infriges into my privacy, especially since I'm not American. I suggest moving away from Skype as a form of protest against it. What's the community's opinion?

This isn't politics related, this is a truth we're living in. PRISM is infiltrating basically all of our conversations. even if you're American since they'll just track what you say through other Non-American members. Of course, I realize there's little need to worry about the efficiency of PRISM, but keeping using Skype is a silent vote of acceptance of the project, by this point, which could bring the American government to refine their methods of data analyzing.

If you do not need to discuss your next bombing, skype is fine. I see no reason not to use it.

I value what little privacy we have left in this world. Accepting Big Brother just taking over under the pretext of "There's nothing wrong with it if you got nothing to hide" is wrong, in my opinion.

You've got a point. But since I'm Indian it doesn't matter. If the US gov isn't spying on me, my own government is.

+1 for democracies!

Unless you have something horrible to hide, I would rather accept the fact that I am watched if it will prevent extremists from bombing stuff.

Also, terrorism, political, government thread. Lock.

What? Privacy? Spying?..

SOPA threads weren't locked. This is the same kind of thing. It affects the community directly since we all use Skype.

What alternatives do we have with similar function?

Xfire and Steam come to mind.

Do we discuss something that conflicts US laws? If no, there is absolutely no reason to worry about such things. If you have nothing to hide, if you have no reason to worry about your privacy being put to question, then why stress over such things? Why? Just go out and enjoy life and be glad that for all these morally questionable things, at least a few incidents were prevented in the US and abroad.

Actually the problem is that the government can get evidence of your life and use that against you. For example, lets say you are not a criminal, you are a law abiding citizen. But the government thinks you are about to meet with a mafioso so they spy on your phone and find out the meeting place: a Hotel room. So they go to the hotel room and put a video camera there. As it turns out, there is no mafioso but rather, an ex girlfriend you are about to get back together with (and you know, do the birds and bees with). Now they may have evidence of your innocence, but whenever the government wants something from you, they can blackmail you because they have a sex tape of you. If you don't do what they ask, they can release the tape, and you'll get fired from your job and it will be the first thing that shows up on google whenever a potential employer searches for you. Basically, it gives the government the power to ruin your life.

It doesn't even have to be the government, it could just an individual working for the government who decides to blackmail you on his/her own accord.

Either way, its bad.
