Writing tips. - Lythrilux - 07-19-2013

Remember that DeM story I wrote ages back? No? Good, I'm glad you don't because it's not great.
Anyone got any tips for writing? I have some really good ideas, but I'd out want to execute them badly.

general writing 101 tips: use short, simple words in short, simple sentences. full stops/periods are your friend, commas aren't.
don't tell the reader what to think too much. as in, don't say, "blah blah blah," said Billy, proudly, with a cheeky smile. just use 'said Billy'. shy away from adjectives on the whole, and long descriptions. when describing people, just pick one thing out, that preferably says a lot about them as a character, and focus on that. messy hair, an expensive watch, a Synth Foods tie pin.
cut cut cut cut cut. delete almost everything you write, especially all your favourite bits. if a sentence doesn't advance the plot or develop a character, delete it. if you can delete it, delete it.
if you can tell the reader things through dialogue rather than writing, do it.

tl:dr - short, neat, efficient, effective.
