Need recommendations for an awesome desktop - Savas - 07-20-2013
I'm upgrading my machine shortly, my performance goal is for it to run some heavy hitting games like Planetside 2, Deus Ex:HR, Rome 2 (when it's out of course) and the like. I've been looking at mostly Cyberpower gear, via recommendation from a friend but I know we've got some PC junkies on here and I'd appreciate some advice. As for the rig itself, I've got give or take, 1k to play around with.

While I (and most enthusiasts) will suggest that you build it yourself, I don't think your particularly interested in that sort of stuff.
However. Based on the games you have mentioned, (I really only know about Planetside 2), I would really suggest a second graphics card (Nvidia) for dedicated PhysX simulation. It really makes Planetside 2 come alive graphically.
Because you have a rather beefy budget, I suggest an Intel based CPU, and Nvidia based GPU setup. Probably a Haswell (4xxx) i7 and a good board (EVGA, ASrock), with a Nvidia GTX-780 and possibly a 600 series card (or 500 series maybe) for PhysX for planetside 2. For data storage, I suggest an SSD for games, and a large (1 TB+) for storage.
Watercooling may be a bit extreme, and will cost extra/have more maintenance, positive being cooler components under load. Plus I don't know how sophisticated a WC loop you could build, assuming you get all the above components. Watercooling gear can get pricey quick.

Haswells not that much of a performance boost if you're getting a desktop with descrete graphics (says the hypocrite whos getting a haswell tday- in my defense the store had no 3570ks left
Also @ switchback would getting a entry level nv card be adequate for the 2ndary physx card?

Thing is with PhysX cards is you have to really think if you need it. On most modern motherboards (take my ASrock Extreme6 Z77 board for example) they cut the PCI-E bus into X8 when you have two cards.
Also, define entry level card. For PhysX processing, whichever card inside your budget that has the highest CUDA core count would be preferable.

9800gtx/gts250 is you want something with a bit more power plus overclocking to 1.9ghz+ on the shader is nothing to laugh at.
gts450/gtx550ti if you want something modern but still want to hit 1ghz on the core without having a lot of power consumption.
If you want to get something that is overkill then a gtx 280, gtx285, or a gtx460 256bit will provide for many years in dedicated physx.

Did some looking on their website. Your going to pay ~25% more if you buy from them. Anyway, im running Planetside 2 on High with 60ish frames per second on my rig:
i5 3570k (overclocked, Watercooled)
EVGA GTX-560 (factory overclocked)
GTX-260 (PhysX dedicated card)
8 gigs of Ram (Corsair Vengeance)
ASrock Extreme6 Z77 mobo
750w PSU
Use those specs as a benchmark.

so I take it sth like a 610 would be useless for dedicated physx? I have a 580w psu- not sure I am able to support running 2 heavy stuffs simultaneously
edit: could get a 630 if i tried really hard
edit2: also, what would the benefits of getting a gpu and a dedicated physx be, compared to say just getting a single card of the same value

Well, I did some more testing with my GTX-260 (I actually just put it into my system today), and it seems to be straining a bit in the big battles. My FPS seems to be taking a bit of a dive to 30ish FPS in the bigger battles, but Im not sure if its just this card or overall.
Must do more research, but I am heading out of town for a week so I won't be able to do much in the form of testing.
Uh, Not sure how a 610 would be for PhysX. Probably not great, but might want to do some research into it.
Vanu weapons create a metric ton of particles when they hut the walls of a building. Looks pretty but may impact performance to much.
Edit: Referencing your Edit #2- It really depends on your needs. If the games you play use PhysX, and they make the game look a lot better (youtube videos), then I suggest a dedicated card. If you play a lot of games that don't use PhysX technology, go for a single card and keep PhysX off/Low.
