Ascension - stardust47 - 08-08-2013

The ice of Gammu seemed to stretch on forever. The coordinates she had been given were drawing near, but still there was no sign of the Consensus' home.
Then, she saw it. A series of small metal structures, with landing pads at the ready. She checked the radio, but there was nothing. Sure of what lay ahead, she brought the Eagle down on to one of the pads and readied her environment suit.
The Consensus had brought her here, to this frozen world. Here, she would learn the truth about the nanites coursing through her veins, and unlock the awesome potential that lay within.
Here, Ann Ryder would become a godess.

From a young age, Ann had been fascinated by artificial intelligence. In her youth, she would often reprogram service 'bots to do her bidding. As she got older, she began studying nanites, and how they operated in groups. At the age of nineteen, she left the dull block of New London flats that had been her home and travelled to Manhattan, to study nanotechnology at Liberty University.
After two years, however, her studies were cut short. It was supposed to be a routine experiment: use nanites to heal an injured rat. The same thing had been done a thousand times before, with the only difference being several new algorithms that Ann herself had developed. Just as she was preparing the test subject, the magnetic containment field failed, releasing a swarm of nanites into the air. Ann was infected, and that should have been the end.
What happened instead was a new beginning.
A few days later, she discovered that she had been granted the ability to interface directly with computers. Immediately she sought help. What had these nanites done to her? Eventually, she found something that would lead to an answer. Rumors of a world ruled by machines, far beyond the safety of House space in the treacherous Nomad Worlds. Almost immediately, she purchased a sturdy Eagle fighter and set off for Gammu.
Along her journey, Ann encountered a group of AIs, who claimed to belong to a 'Consensus'. She travelled with them, and told them her story. They had directed her to the research division of the Consensus, which told her to come to Gammu, and then all would be revealed.

Upon leaving her ship, Ann was greeted by a humanoid robot, which led her into what appeared to be a research facility. The room was empty, save a metal seat in the centre. Seeing no other option, Ann took off her radiation suit and prepared for the analysis.

"Hello, Ann. I'm Jane", the woman said while she moved into the room. "I'll accompany you at this" She smiled. "You know, it fas fortunate that you contacted us, because that's certainly getting interesting and useful, for our own projects as much as for yours"

She wore a blue flight-suit and her blond hair was hanging down loosely. "Just sit down there", she said and pointed to the chair. "Got any questions before we begin?"

Ann thought carefully for a moment as she looked around the room.
There was nothing else there, except this strangely human-looking robot.

"What are you going to do to me?" she said.

"Well, we'd start with scanning and examining your body, trying to locate the nanites", Jane answered. "It won't hurt or so, it's just a strong scan" She smiled encouraginly, then continued. "The nanites must have done some impossible things, that for sure"

Jane moved over to a wall. "This complex is shielded against the radiation of course, I wouldn't recommend walking outside of it for too long, that can be 'unhealthy'. Also, tell me if you need something. If you don't, we can begin I guess"

Ann leaned back against the seat.

"Alright, let's just get on with it."

Jane just watched while two metal bars descended from the ceiling. They started moving up and down while turning around the chair. Jane watched them, as they did that, then told Ann to close her eyes.

After she closed them the bars scanned Ann with lasers and her body nearly glowed redly of the lasers. Jane looked suprised while staring forward without actually seeing anything.

After a while the bars ascended into the ceiling again and disappeared there. "Now that looks interesting. Your body has contains many nanofibers, getting more dense the closer it comes to your brain. It's still sparse enough to be missed by normal scanners though. There must be some interface of it to your brain though, else you couldn't communicate with computers directly. That's even more interesting than what we expected", she said excited to Ann.

Ann thought about what she heard. Nanofibres made sense- after all, the nanites were originally designed for repairing broken limbs.
"What else can I do with these nanites?" she asked, "Can I control them?"

RE: Ascension - Occam Razor - 08-09-2013

"I don't really know. Either you somehow subconscious control them, or they have their own intelligence and just support you", she answered and sighed. "Both possibilities remain. The first one would be more useful though. Could you demonstrate how you interface with a computer? There's a human one with which we can experiment" She pointed towards a small black box laying at the ground which obviously was brought in when Ann had her eyes closed.

Ann got up off the chair and walked over to the computer and flipped up the screen. It was only a basic model using an outdated version of Fenestrae, so there wasn't much that Ann could show off, but it would be enough. She placed her hand on the keyboard. She felt a tingling in her hand as the nanites reached into the computer's CPU, giving her direct control.
She opened up a text editor and the words 'Look- no hands!' appeared, seemingly out of nowhere.
"Impressive..." said Jane.
Ann smiled. "I'm just getting started."
She concentrated very hard, accessing the workings of the operating system. Whole blocks of code changed in the blink of an eye, rapidly shifting around. A few seconds later, she took her hand off the keyboard.
"What did you just do?"
"Take a look at the computer. I think you'll find that the operating system is now two hundred per cent more efficient."

RE: Ascension - Occam Razor - 08-09-2013

"Impressive, yes, never seen a human able to do that. It was a human system though, so improving it wasn't so hard", Jane said to her and giggled."You created a direct control to the computer with nanofibers through your hand. Interesting. Is that ability somehow limited? Does it eat energy of your body? What is the speed limit of such a connection?"
