Legend of the Galactic Heroes - Fluffyball - 09-13-2013 Notice: I am not an anime fanatic, I would even count the anime I have watched and really liked onto my fingers of my hand. But I believe this one is worth posting here. I am just wondering if anyone, who likes sci-fi (and anime) does recognise the title. Based on the books under same title, which however never had been translated into English (except a few things by fans), yet the series ARE translated into English - fans' work, too. Do you think about Macross, Gundam or Robotech? WRONG. It's PURE sci-fi, without robots or damn teenage girls with quest about the good and evil. No magic, no catgirls or even anything that you may see in the most of modern anime. It's... well... I can't really place it, but I would place it between Space Opera and Hard Sci-Fi, because mostly believeable physics (I liked how jumps cannot be made close to planets, bases or another ships, since shockwave of enegry released would smash it), lack of missile weaponry as the main one and battles which may last hours and days, on the one hand - yet with a lot, LOT of characters on screen, interesting drama-like plots, battles, and strategic victories, draws and EPIC battles (pew-pew in space-fans will be delighted, if they seek this here) If I was to speak of it in four words, those would be: battles, politics, tactics, characters. There are also more humoristic elements that you must find youself, but I will spoil with the picture: Or this, that almost made me cry from laughter: Episodes are counted as 110 for the "original" series (by 70s? 80s?), yet none of them is filler. We have plot, actions and events that impact the farther episodes (butterfly effect, if you know what I mean) and many characters. A lot of them, but none of them is flat (except for a one, but this one is really emotionless). Yet the tactics, which are rather like tacts from the Napoleonic Wars doesn't even bore. Major turnouts, fighting and waiting as the drama slowly unfolds. I will also kinda spoil, but not too much, that one of the major characters dies very early thus impacting the later plot. Unlike the many sci-fi titles, we don't have either bad or good side. Not to spoil too much, I had the feeling that Free Planets Alliance was the most aggresive one (it is shown in early episodes how so-called Patriotic Guard take care of those who are after finishing the war and supports peace), yet the Empire (and later Reich, I will not spoil why) doesn't seem to be good either, built up on tyrany and terror, yet both sides fight for their sake and people. No one is good or evil at the matter of white-black scheme. This show doesn't even follow this. But in the end, the history goes on with the good and evil people on the both sides. And the soundtrack. This one is just true masterpiece. You have all pieces of classical music, which fits the majestic and epicness of the battles. Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Ravel or even Dvorak. There is my definite favourite, behold the: It may be subjective, but I believe LOGH would beat the crap out of both BSG, Star Trek and Babylon 5. If not, as I LOVE all three series (yes, I count BSG as two different series, but name it one) - LOGH is damn close to do so. RE: Legend of the Galactic Heroes - Echo 7-7 - 09-14-2013 Ah, LOTGH... I watched this several years ago and absolutely loved it. A Space Opera in every sense. I would recommend it to sci-fi anime fans with plenty of spare time; 110 episodes is quite lengthy, but well worth it. Too bad that many sci-fi fans go away from that because "it's childish chinese cartoon". ._. |
