The REAL reason why Bretonia is weak... - Highland Laddie - 11-25-2013

Look how they plan their "prototype" Capships

Stage 7: The Armor Plating <On Hold>
-Ablative Armor Plating: 30'000
-Aluminum: 15'000
-Hydrocarbons: 15'000
-Industrial Materials: 5'000

They're using bloody Aluminium for 1/3 of its armor! They're out there fighting the Gauls in flying soda cans! Big Grin

nah...j/k. It just really hit me as funny as I was reading through this today. (funny how it skipped my notice before Tongue)

I don't get it.

haha, You have a point but still - the commodities are limited and we have to work with what we have.

FLstats info:
-Aluminum is very resistant to corrosion and possesses a low density, is nonmagnetic and nonsparking, and is a good thermal and electrical conductor. Aluminium is extremely important in the composition of various alloys essential to transportation, construction, and aerospace applications.
-Hydrocarbon mining is key to the industrialization of the Sirius Sector as it provides the raw materials for the creation of the Ship Hull Panels and Optronics, upon which modern society depends.

Since Southampton have a new look in RP it have 2 small refineries to help the raw materials to be easily turned in to alloys, ship panels and stuff like that useful for ship building. That is why the "Armor plating" stage is simply to deliver more goods, complete and incomplete. Aluminum is one of the incomplete materials same like Hydrocarbons (15k+15k = ~15k solid alloy and upgraded metal for panels)
Ablative hull armor are primary material for "ship hull" - 30'000 means a lot considering they are wide and huge armor plates not a tiny version.

Why so srs?

Certain grades of aluminium are highly resistant and durable, you know. Not to mention lightweight and cheap.

Apparently this aluminum-made thingie hadn't a good time whenever it was hit.

@Fallen - I know it's limited game-wise. Just some fun at our own expense.

But...on a more serious argument - since capships wouldn't really land on planets, or encounter situations where they are exposed to environments that are very corrosive (like atmospheres), corrosion is really a non-factor in the issue. Chromium and Nickel are much stronger and more corrosion resistant elements.

As for "lightweight"....not really want you want for armor unless it is also very strong/tough. In which Titanium (or now we have Carbon nanofiber) would be a better choice.

Maybe even an Iridium alloy for better resistance to energy-based weaponry? Meh....science fiction science. It's all speculation at some point.
